The two things that struck me about this were that A.) Old people are inherently creepy and B.) they got a better cast that I expected from the first one (which I thought was fine). Kind of excited.

Really looking forward to this. The trailer hit just the right note for me--I think one of Stephen King's great strengths as a horror writer is that he understands how close horror and humour can be, and the good adaptations are the ones that capture that.

Loved the first one and really looking forward to this second movie. The cast is very strong - good to see James, Michael and Jess together again after Dark Phoenix. Bill Hader from SNL too!

I have arachnophobia but somehow get a kick out of giant spiders in horror, fantasy and sci-fi movies. Can't wait to see how they pull off Pennywise's true form!
The 90s tv movie was awesome too. Johnathan Brandis and his fellow young cast stole the show!

Saw the movie last Friday and it was pretty good. Not quite as tight as the first movie, and through no fault of its own the ending is still a bit weak compared to the ending of Chapter 1. After two adaptations, it seems like its the source material that is holding it back. All the same its worth watching as an encore of the first and catch up with the gang.
Instead of trying to compete with Chapter 1's more serious approach, Chapter 2 is out to have a good time with the audience. The cast, which includes both young and mature(yeah, right!), clearly had a good time making IT and if one goes in expecting The Lost Boys or the Goonies, you won't be disappointed. I didn't notice the long running time( honestly felt like only two hours ) but apparently its nearly 3 hours long...
The vfx for Pennywise in the climax is certainly more robust than in the miniseries and successfully combines two phobias. Scared of clowns? Mwahahahahaha...you will be now!
Apparently there is a Directors cut of Chapter 2 on the way, as some moments in the film seemed skimmed over compared to the 1990s version.
I haven't seen Chapter 2 yet but I might watch it this weekend. To be honest, I kinda expect that it won't be as good as the first one but I'm still keen on seeing the conclusion of the story.
Tested a set lexani wheels. Love the overall design and handling of this rims.

Saw this last night, and I agree. I liked them both, but the first one had a better story. The second one is essentially the same movie, but as adults - How are you supposed to not feel like it's a retread? Unfortunately it really is baked into the product - that's the book.
Still, I agree that as you say, they had a good time making the movie. They spent plenty of time on those little side-scenes of horror that as a single cohesive movie would have been left on the cutting room floor. I guess that's one of the advantages of telling a 5 hour story, you can throw in scenes of just random, creepy stuff even if it's a bit overkill and not worry as much about pacing.
One of the best scenes for me visually was when he floats down off the Paul Bunyan statues with the balloons (this is in some of the trailers). It just came together really well. Also, one thing I noticed was that a lot of the scene transitions were cleverly done - for example, at one point,

a character looks up at the stars and it transitions into another character assembling a puzzle on a glass table, shot from underneath.
It's very well done and there were several that were done like that.
It's wasn't exactly a timeless cinematic classic., but if you liked the last one, you'll like this one. If you hated the last one, I think you'll hate this one too - and if you only liked the last one because of the novelty (for you whippersnappers that didn't see the one in 1990).... then this one will be iffy, because it hits all the same beats and covers all the same ground.

Even in the book the 'modern' part isn't as strong as the time when they are the kids so even with the changes the basic elements are, as you say, baked in. Overall I liked it and think it finished the story out well, much better than the miniseries was able to.
You do get the impression that Pennywise is kind of holding a grudge against the Losers. Speaking which, while the choices of adults is really well done and they all did a good job special mention has to go to Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise again.
The first part was liked by both critics and audiences but this one is falling more into the standard "critics don't like it but audiences enjoy it". If you enjoyed the first part I would recommend hitting up this one as well.

Loved Bill's performance and it would be a shame if he didn't get an Academy award for his hard work.
Picked up The Dark Tower after seeing Chapter 2 and remembered being disappointed when they didn't make a connection to IT, considering the two released in the same year. I don't think Tower was well recieved and have never actually read a Stephen King novel in my life, but I heard there was some shared material and felt it was a missed opportunity. Oh well.
This duology has been a blast and when Chapter 2 is released on home media I might even pick up The World of IT...
watched it tonight and my god is this movie bad the year of disapointment has not disapointed with this one haha.
Acting is ok, pacing is terrible, story is terrible, edits and cuts are terrible, music is meh, dread is gone and replaced with crap jump scares and worst of all the last part of the film is basically a marvel movie with CGI villain!!!!! wow, such innovation!!!!!
go watch it to complete the saga and then wait for the inevitable directors cut that will put parts of the movie back in so it isnt just a jumbled mess.

I'm not quite sure how I feel after seeing the movie. Part of it might be that the book is one of the top five novels I've ever read, so I was trying not to compare it too much to the book and enjoy the film on its own merits. And it's a good adaptation--slightly disappointing final form aside, the horror felt mostly effective (one bit from the book is switched so it happens to a different character, which really caught me off-guard), and I liked that they were able to convey Pennywise as a genuinely alien creature. Some of the attempts to emulate King's mixture of humour / absurdity and horror worked (like the old lady bit from the trailer), and others felt jarring.
On chewing it over, I think the adaptation left out two aspects which made the book so memorable for me.

One was the sense of the town as a character, and the growing sense of dread that came on realising just how deeply entrenched the monster was in Derry, and how the townsfolk cooperate with the murder sprees without ever quite realising what they're doing. Two of the most chilling moments in the book for me were when Beverley's father is chasing her through the streets or when a nurse comes to kill Mike in the hospital, and anyone who might interfere is being kept from noticing what's happening. The people of the town have been trained to just....not notice they're essentially being farmed, even when it's blindingly obvious to an outsider or a kid who starts to dig a bit. And that's really underlined in the ending, where a massive storm destroys a large chunk of the town along with the death of the monster.
The other is the theme of children seeing the world differently from adults, and childhood being a time when everything feels more vivid--you're less experienced and jaded so the good times are better, but the bad things are more devastating and horrific. And then add an actual monster that's looking for your worst nightmares so it can kill you with them. And that's pivotal to how it's defeated in the end, by using the "what you imagine is real" power against it, and by forcing it into a true form that is horrific but is something that can understood and fought.
And the thing is, I can understand why they didn't go with those bits. The miniseries had a go at conveying them, and too often the attempts just felt jarring or random because a visual medium can't go into the emotional state or thought processes of the characters, which is where King does a lot of his work in making the horror effective--he's a master of "this would be funny / ridiculous if it wasn't happening to me". What they come up with works, but it feels a bit....unexceptional, I guess.
It makes me wonder about next year's Dune movie, which will have the same sorts of adaptation issues.
All that said, I think it's a good movie, and probably close to the best film adaptation that's realistically possible. The characterisation was what really made it work for me, notably the early scene at the resturant where it smoothly goes from "having a blast meeting old pals again" to a suddenly sombre "oh right, that's why we're here...."

I recall someone describing It as crab with the fleshy parts being the creature itself and the town being the shell. It is one of the reasons why it never really goes outside of Derry because the town is comfy and protects it, essentially, and why when it dies a lot of the town goes with it. They hinted a bit at it in the films that adults were being affected by it but it is more obvious in the book to be sure.

I am quite disappointed because it's not really scary, too many jokes and too light hearthed, and too many CGI.
Still, it is a good movie and it is especially difficult to be compared to the best of King's stories.
Agreed there are themes in the book that really can't be pushed to much visually. Additionally, one really can't do the Ritual properly, because its a literal out of body thing. ON the positive the wife actually stayed awake through it, which is a major event...

It was good. It was not great. If you are a fan of the book it is a must watch though, and has some legitimately scary scenes.

Eh. He and his buddy repairman have certain buttons they want pushed or not pushed. Watch their reviews for Dark Phoenix or The Blair Witch Project. Heck, they both raved about Freddy Got Fingered, and that movie is banned by the Geneva Convention. Put on a Neil Breen movie and they're happy as clams. They're entertaining, but not very useful as critics if you're trying to figure out whether or not to watch a movie.

I think we're talking about different critics. You might think i'm talking about nostalgia critic or something. I'm actually talking about 'The Critical Drinker'. He's a pretty witty and funny drunk Scotsman on youtube. That said he sides with one of the two factions in the culture war and that's about as far as i'll get into that. Since I find him entertaining and he ragged on The Last Jedi you can probably guess which side he's on.
