Man, everyone was telling me it's irresponsible not to finish assembling and painting what I already had before buying more, that it is similarly irresponsible to go into Deb buying everything at once rather than saving up my spending money. Turns out they were the irresponsible ones.

Honestly I think the lesson here is if you're spending money spend it on a game/model/whatever that's been around a while rather than the newest shinny since the new hotness will probably still be around in 6 months while something that came out in 2009 might not be.

And said new models may make it into a start collecting or other deal box that saves money at some point.
Where as on release not so much.
(Like all the people hoping for Sisters to be in a new starter/campaign box, or thought they’d have been in Kill Team. I just don’t get why they think it would happen, GW can just sell at full whack because it’s ‘finally coming back’ and that insane fever is in the air for those wanting them)

Out of curiosity what's the oldest kits GW still makes?
I remember kitbashing zombies and Catachans in 2000 so they'd be my pick. That zombie kit is damn good... maybe I should get one or two before the axe comes down and they become Zumbeez with 18 parts per model and one pose...

I think the Zombie kit is older, but next in line should be the Khorne Berserkers, actually followed by the Catachan Jungle Fighters kit.

I had the older models from the list. I bought a lot of the older stuff before and during The End Times. The HE sky boat is pretty new, though. I wasn't expecting that to be axed.

I expected this when they announced the free cities book.
The great purge.
Seriously though, we had a couple of years to get this stuff since "end times" -I have a bunch of high elves from back then because I love that range and always figured it was just a matter of time.
Lets just hope the remaining stuff get more attention now. (some stuff might even get put in some larger collecting boxes, right?)

a) not everybody has unlimited money
b) it's not even like GW removes models just for not selling. Even exceeding GW's own expectation by 400%(and nobody greenlights models if they don't expect them to provide profit so clearly not only they were profitable if they sold as expected nevermind 400% over...) doesn't quarantee not being killed off and unlike rumours to contrary squats did not sell poorly which supposedly led to squatting of squats.

This is probably a silly question but how likely is it that since GW is releasing the cities of sigmar book they're just repackaging this on round bases and it'll be a while before they're back?

If they were just "out of stock", it might mean it. But they're on the deathclock, so unlikely.
a) not everybody has unlimited money
Surely if you really wanted the model(s) you'd buy them by now, they were around for 5-10 years. This isn't a case of GW yanking a brand new model out of stock.
Gamers really have a slanted perspective due to how long models remain in stock, think of any other industry where the same product remains on sale for 10 or 20 years.

Well, I did some more high-fantasy Witch Hunters led by a Knight Excelsior fanatic last year for Skimish/Hinterlands. As of two weeks ago Warcry and the Mordheim 2019 event made me want an oldhammer posse of Witch Hunters, too. I didn't buy anything, becaude my FLGS was finally out of state trooper boxes (and the Stormcast plus Empire box they had until recently). Now the Witch Hunter model is gone. As are archers, which might have been useful together with the state trooper kits. Whoops.
I wanted to run some Splintered Fangs with the Slaanesh snakelord, too, but it disappeared upon the BT release, too.
I have really bad luck with AoS projects. Then again, I'm drowning in half built gangs and KTs, anyway.

Saying people should just have bought them 5 years ago is a very strange argument.
Some may not have started the hobby then. Existing players are continuously expanding their collection, or starting new armies and projects.
This is not unlike when GW revamps their paint line for the Xth time: people will be quite annoyed if a particular colour disappears when they needed another one or two pots to finish an army. Do you then tell them they should have purchased 10 pots when starting the army, or ask them why they didn't finish painting the army 5 years ago? I didn't purchase everything I might ever wanted in the past because I A) don't want to have a absolutely massive pile of unpainted plastic, and B) don't know what I may end up wanting more of, depending on the way games work, or change, or what units I enjoyed painting, or what bits ended up running out quickly, etc.
In the days before this announcement, I had been planning to order a box of the Empire archers, but they were out of stock, and now fully out of production. I don't get the impression sales numbers have anything to do with it; as others have said it seems more aimed at culling kits with duplicate roles in the free peoples army, and general things they don't feel fit the AoS universe.
Finally, reboxing to round bases is almost certainly not the case. Have seen Facebook responses from GW stating it isn't; some of the axed kits already came supplied with round bases apparently, and a lot of kits from these ranges that do come with square bases are not on the list, suggesting they are the ones that will be repackaged.

Cronch wrote:I'm just saying expecting every product ever produced by GW to be available in perpetuity because "some day i might want it" seems...a little out of touch with reality. Given the nature of GW games (the way you gradually build up armies, it's not like you buy a set and are done) I reckon GW should have given some warning things were going to get the arse, give folk some time to build up what they need and then just kill them off properly. I don't have enough money to buy everything I maybe perhaps someday want to get to expand one of my WHFB armies, but if G-Dubs gave some warning of what they were going to be killing off you could put together a plan of what you are going to get. I know that's not usually how companies work when they kill stuff off, but WHFB isn't your typical product either, it's something people gradually over the course of many years invest hundreds of dollars and hundreds of hours in collecting. Most people don't go down to the shop and drop $1000-2000 in one hit on everything they'll ever need for an army. The same thing happened when Forge World killed off AI the first time, people were gradually building their squadrons then suddenly we notice they are getting killed and then in a short space of time people madly buy up what they can and a lot of people are left holding on to half finished squadrons that they can't complete. These days I don't really care that GW kills stuff anymore, WHFB is dead as a doornail, I would have rather they just killed it all off at once instead of this gradual thing they've got going on.

Let's have a taste of reality, shall we?
Five years ago we were playing an entirely different game system in an entirely different setting. The End Times were merely a rumor centered around the return of Nagash,
Four years ago Age of Sigmar was barely even a game and hurled GW in panic mode because of its abysmal sales.
Three years ago Age of Sigmar had the bare minimum of what a wargame needs for rules.
Two years ago the paradigm for battletome changed and what we got was different from what battletomes were before.
A year ago a new edition changed up the game, added different magic rules and the way battletomes were written changed once again.
You know what's out of touch with reality? Investing in a shifting mess like that because everything will be OK and GW surely won't invalidate your collection.

In a couple of those stages - esp the latter ones - GW appeared to be pulling things together.
That said its been a very hard thing to predict, armies ilke Skaven kept most of their models even metals; whilst other armies have been slashed to nothing or removed.
The light at the end of the tunnel is that we are approaching a point where GW will have the whole game on 2.0 rules and from then on things should settle down to more normal running. That is loss of one or two models here and there; general replacement with resculpts or new ideas and addition of new models over time
Ergo we should be over the hump of losing stuff.
Now Gutbusters and Slaves to Darkness are still potential armies to lose things - finecast models I can see vanishing from Slaves (mostly all those exalted heroes) meanwhile if GW did 1 multipart gutbuster sprue in plastic they could drop several of the old finecast/metal gutbuster maneater models when they do the ogres line.
Otherwise things should be levelling out and being more stable. In fact we should soon enter a time where all we see is additions to the game. It's been a terribly messy 4 years to get to the stable 2.0 and we aren't finished yet, but its soon!!

Yeah, I'm looking forward to the long overdue time when GW doesn't just have a plan but shows it to the customers. As you say, hopefully a complete overhaul to 2nd ed will mark that time and give the game and setting a measure of stability.

I don't expect them to show their hand, though it would have been great if they could have told us the 2.0 plans and what was staying/dropping a year ago. I just expect to see things return to a more normal release pattern for a major game from GW. AoS has been a terribly bumpy ride with massive swings in how GW approaches it all the time. 2.0 has even been bumpy and we still don't fully know what the plans for warcry warbands are within the game etc... But things are getting more and more stable and by and large GW has been pretty consistent with 2.0 releases.

Yeah, I don't mean that they actually explain their approach. It's plenty good if they manage to write all battletomes of 2nd ed to the same standard, give everyone endless spells and faction terrain, have no models left over outside of up to date battletomes - you know, something you can look at and say yep, this is the plan for 2nd ed.
We'll eventually have a new round for 3rd ed, but if they can do an entire edition to the same standard, we can conclude with some reassurance that they've found their feet and will deliver something reasonably predictable people can plan around.

I'm going to have to agree with this. It sucks that so many kits are going away, but they've been available. If you haven't decided to pick any of them up yet, they weren't your priority purchases. After this, I'm going to go ahead and pick up a few Slaves to Darkness kits I've been contemplating just in case they get purged when the Slaves/Everchosen tome comes out.
