Subject: Dakka Painting Challenge Round 55 September 2019: Up, Up and Away!
Welcome all to the 55th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For those who haven't seen the challenge before, it is a community-focused friendly competition open to anyone on the site, regardless of your skill level or experience. Every round contributes towards a League table, which ultimately means nothing but is a lot of fun to keep an eye on and jockey for position with Dakka's other painters.
This month, the theme is Up, Up and Away, so we're looking for all things aerial, from soaring dragons to lightning-fast jetfighters, starships to airships, jetpacks to wings.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in. The overall winner of the League for this year will receive a set of Dakka Dice.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of September and will end at midnight UK time on the 30th of September. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

I was thinking about doing a stromhawk, but I’m a bit behind on my model count for the year, and there are a lot of shiny mew models out there, so my paint more then I buy goal might be at risk as well. So 3 windriders are going to intercept a pair of deathwatch inceptors.
The Khardon Overlords and Sylvaneth became embittered over who could use a track of land after fighting off a chaos incursion. The Khardon Overlords paid little heed to the ground dwelling treemen seeing as they possessed air superiority though the Sylvaneth clearly had numbers. Figuring on a quick end to the battle the Khardon Overlords brought their fleet in close....too close it seems. Taking a play from a game in the world that was the Treelord Ancients began throwing their team-mates at the Khardon vessels. The Khardon who had not bothered to prepare fully were taken off guard by the SAP (Surface to Air Plantlife) and were quickly undone. At the truce talks overseen a delegation of Stormcast Eternals, the great growth ancient Cypress was heard to say about the battle
“Who needs air superiority when your limbs reach the sky?”
Picked up a start collecting Sylvaneth box this week after having so much fun building and painting the Warhammer Underworlds Ylthari’s Guardians warband. I always wanted to build a tree man heavy WHF army, never got around to it till now .
Sprues or spruces, guess autocorrects going to get a workout with this . Had to modify the left arm some and trimmed a few branches that were in the way.
This ”Gumball Special” is so inspired by my favorite comic book team the Uncanny X-men with Wolverine and Colossus working together for their Fastball Special.
The first SAP will get a name eventually, and is not glued into place so I can do a flight picture when all painted up.

Some interesting stuff already taking shape in here. My own entry isn't as inspired but should hopefully be interesting to someone in here. I'll be doing a squad of Suppressors for my Dark Angels:
Hopefully they don't prove too difficult. I've got other stuff I need to be working on that totally doesn't fit the theme this month, so it could slow me down if I'm not careful.
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

The Grotsnik Corp Bump Feelerer 9,000. It only looks like several bricks crudely gaffer taped to a cricket bat.

I'm just going to get some Chainghasts done for my Nighthaunt army. Proof pic to come later tonight or tomorrow. I'd love to try and get the Coach done but I know that's just going to end in failure.
Turns out I picked the quickest project I've ever done in 11 years of hobbying!

Automatically Appended Next Post: My proof for this month, a warlock skyrunner. I don't have any of the new bikes so this one will stick out a bit from my overall army but hey ho, it's an entry I can do quickly:

Its quite straight forward. Start with a basecoat of Waaagh! Flesh, shade with Agrax Earthshade, layer over with Warboss Green painting in lines following the ridges. Then I repeat the layering with a 50/50 of Warboss Green and Flash Gitz Yellow. If its bigger coils like on a Plasma Cannon or above, I then do 1:2 mix of Warboss to Flash Gitz on the sharp edges. Moot Green can be substituted for the mix, I just don't feel like buying a whole paint just for the eyes, purity seals and plasma. Depending on the model I also do a very fine highlight of white on the corners but not usually. Then I glaze with Waywatcher Green to blend the highlights and hit it with gloss varnish.
Also thanks Rybrook and Tyranid Horde! Looking forward to seeing both your entries finished!

The Orks are correct: The red ones do go faster!
I notice this myself when painting my Eldar vehicles. A (blue) marine tank is a slog I need to force myself through weeks of work to finish. Eldar (red) Leap off the bench in just a few days. When you figure my red takes about a zillion coats to get a smooth finish, this is kinda shocking.
Nice Work Deadshot, congrats on getting them finished to a good standard so quickly. Have you been subscribing to the Para school of painting recently?
Cool choice DV8, looking forward to seeing what you do with those, lots of nice potential with the capes/cloth.
Paradigm wrote: @Bellerophon: My vote definitely goes to doing the HE Prince. Hands down, one of my all-time favourite minis and I'd love to see your take on it.
Alright then!
I've had this guy since Island of Blood first came out. I was mainly a WHFB collector in those days and High Elves were my main army, so a starter set with my army in it was an instant buy when WHFB 8th came out. But I drifted away from the hobby shortly after, and I'd only got as far as building and priming the HE, and half painting the Seaguard. The Phoenix I did for the challenge a couple of months ago is the first HE model I've finished since then, so it's about time the prince got done.
From back when I used to prime things black...
It'll probably be towards the end of the month before I manage to get him done - I'm trying to finish some Eldar Rangers in time for a game, and I've got a week away for work coming up.
