Subject: Re:Viterbi paints and builds... Ghost test model, failed Cel shading, Red WIP and the LT we deserve
I thought the Red WIP was going to be Iron Man, but Hellboy will do and he is looking good already. Is he restic like a lot of the Mantic board game pieces or some other material?
How did you go about the cell shading? It is a foreign concept to me.
youwashock wrote:LT is rocking those colors. He turned out really well. Low effort, sweet results for the ghost. Hellboy looks like a lot of fun.
Thanks youwashock!
aku-chan wrote:Hellboy is looking good!
Thanks aku-chan!
gobert wrote:Low effort ghostly looks great, is that just a contrast paint? My only note would be that the Rose looks a bit lost in the base as it doesn’t seem bright red enough, could be the lighting though. Nice job on the Lt, his blade looks nice and bloody!
Thanks gobert! Low-effort ghost was sprayed Grey Seer, than I painted the vines and roses with normal paints, put Basilicanum Grey Contrast over the whole mini and drybrushed the ghost with Celestra Grey after everything was dry.
And thanks for the tip with the rose. In reality it's not that dark but a little brighter accent on the top could really help make it pop.
JoshInJapan wrote:The ghosts look good so far. Even if the cel shading didn't turn out like you planned, it's a win for you because you're trying something new.
Thanks JoshInJapan!
DJJazzyJeff wrote:I really like that LT sculpt, too. Come to think of it, I could probably use another LT myself . . .
One can never have enough LTs, fact of life!
inmygravenimage wrote:Lovely low key ghost, and glad you're finally cracking into the Hellboy!
Thanks Graven! Although Hellboy will pobably be alone for quite some time
zahnib wrote:I imagine black and white would be particularly tricky colours to pull off when going for a cell-shaded look. The low effort ghost turned out great though!
Thanks zahnib! Yeah, it probably wasn't the best choice for a first foray into it
Yorkright wrote: Ghosts look good, that Lt. is quite the stand out model. The pistol conversion and base looks great can you tell me what you use for the snow effect?
Thanks Yorkright! I use the Valhallan Blizzard stuff from GW for the snow. Easy to apply and seems to hold quite well, my oldest model with snow on the base is now two years old.
Meer_Cat wrote:I also liked the ghosts. The subtle colors in the base were particularly good, I thought, but could see bringing the roses themselves up a small touch.
Thanks Meer_Cat! Yeah, the roses will definitely get another brighter accent, now that you and gobert mentioned it
Syro_ wrote:Wow, Viterbi. What large and impressive updates. Very nice LT, and I'm impressed that you are working to get all of your undead painted up.
Thanks Syro_! All the Undead sounds big, but in effect it's not 20 minis and with my low-effort scheme it is... low-effort

Iron Man is already based red too, but only because I did the eye lenses on the LT and thought "eh, gonna base layer Iron Man with contrast, if I have it out anyway" . But he will most definitely get some more colors too in the next days.
I'm not sure about the material of the Hellboy figs, some kind of plastic is my best guess.
Regarding the cel shading I had watched a video for painting the Marvel Crisis Protocol terrain that way. You paint it normally (base, wash, maybe a light drybrush) and than you do edge highlighting but with black so that it looks like hand-drawn, here's the video, very nice tutorial:

Found a pocketful of motivation und pushed the Penitent Engine over the finish line. Could have used a touchup here and there, but it's good enough for gaming.

Nice one! It’s a bit of an odd sculpt the penitent engine I think. But as always your Imperial colours shine through! Is the pilot blue because he’s cold or because he’s nearly dead?

Nice work on the Penitent Engine Viterbi, I like the blue flesh tones. I agree with gobert, it is a bit of an odd sculpt, but you've done a great job. I wish they'd just done a plastic version of the old metal one.

Thanks gobert! Actually after I put the Grey Seer base down for the Contrast skin application I realized that in combination with the purple pants he gave of a bit of a Joker vibe. So I left his skin white, made the helmet green and somewhere Dr. Arkham is very happy indeed
zahnib wrote:Nice work on the Penitent Engine Viterbi, I like the blue flesh tones. I agree with gobert, it is a bit of an odd sculpt, but you've done a great job. I wish they'd just done a plastic version of the old metal one.
Thanks zahnib! Yeah, it is a bit weird, but I've come to like it and can't wait to charge it into heretics and xenos alike!
I built and primed the last ghosts and some of them are already in the works (as can be seen on the following pictures), but I wanted to get some hangerson out of the way.
First up are the Count-As Death Cult Assassins, the reprogrammed murder buckets. My friend has them for their Necron army all painted up and it will be fun when they clash on the battlefield Secondly I finally finished the Canoness from the Sororitas Army Set, so I finally painted all minis from the set ( I had set her and the Penitent Engine aside for a while, because all the other Sororitas stuff I bought after the set was much more interesting ).

Subject: Viterbi paints and builds... Penitent Engine, Count-As Death Cult Assassins & Canoness done
The problem with Penitent engines is I cannot see them without repeating those Sean Connery lines from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It looks great in your scheme, as do the heretical death cult assassin and Cannoness. Grand stuff.
amazingturtles wrote:Dang but the cannoness has one heck of a collar. I think the collar is a weapon too. Great painting and color work as always!
Thanks amazingturtles! And thanks, now I imagine her headbanging over the battlefield, decapitating heretics left and right with her collar

Well done Viterbi, that penitent engine driver does look cold, but I can see why you went the way you did. When is the next battle scheduled?
Thanks Yorkright! No schedule yet, wife and I have caught the plague (but she's already over it and I'm getting better by the day) so we have to wait to be cleared for interaction with other humans I'm hoping to have a match on Halloween, fingers crossed!

Thanks ListenToMeWarriors! And when a model brings recollections of Connery's gruff delivery it can't be a bad model

Thanks Captain Brown!
And with the Sisters models out of the way the ghosts got my full attention. They paint up so quick and nice. First up were the four chainrasps I had left from the Briar Queen warband. Was quite puzzled by red hood because there were no roses on his base, all other models have them. So I opted for painting the hood red and his shackles on the base green. It will suffice. Candle guy got some more colors because in WarCry I can use him as a leader type (who is normally represented by candelabra guy from the chainrasp box, but I already painted him in another scheme for Mordheim and he is on a square base).
As suggested by gobert and Maharg I painted the roses a bit brighter after sloshing the model with Basilicanum Grey to make them pop more. Also redid them on the test model and painted up her three sisters yesterday evening. That brings me to eight finished models.
It's good to see that there are some gaps on the models I thought I filled up with glue, but apparently didn't work. Hellboy and the Cairn Wraith in the background are scheduled for the weekend, after I have finished that bunch:
Front row I want to do today. The other five in the back are planned for Thursday. Unfortunately they have no sculpted bases, so I will paint their weapon for a color splash and I have flowers lying around somewhere for their bases.

The ghosts have turned out nicely with the basilicus wash.
That penitent engine looks ready to reap some heathens .

The extra color for the roses works really well, and they look perfectly ghostly. The guys with the deerskulls are some of my favorites to paint, i think. I'm looking forward to seeing how you do them!

And the ghosts are done, decided to add to all skulls some Blood for the Blood Good for extra gribbliness. Bell guy also got another finish and blood on his arms because he's a special model in WarCry.
In the background you can see my second start on the Cairn Wraith, who can be used as an ally in WarCry. I will try something new, hopefully it works out this time, not like the cel shading

Nice and ready for the Unofficial Painting Challenge.
I really like Blood God over monochrome, that's a really cool effect. Lots of classic horror vibes coming from these gribblies.
My painting log is full of snakes Have any retro, vintage, or out of print models? Show them off here! Games I play: 40k (CSM, Necrons); AoS/Fantasy (Seraphon/Lizardmen); Warcry; Marvel Crisis Protocol; Wargods of Olympus/Aegyptus; Mythos

Aye, the blood god really makes them pop a bit more. Nighthaunt are a great way to to increase your miniature count for the year, I think I smashed out a fair few earlier in the year.
Great choice on the bloody skulls! Will they all be getting the bloody skulls and other money bits treatment? I hope so, it’s properly chilling! The purple (heather?) on the base is a good companion for the red roses, nicely done!

Thanks Captain Brown! You're right, but now the main attraction is still missing, they will be up against Hellboy, who is still WIP.

Thanks gobert! The ghosts are all finished on the pics, everyone with a skull got it bloddied (the Banshees only their jaw, the rest is under the hood). And the package declared the purple flowers as Highland Tuft. I'm no expert, if that's true. Alas I had nearly none left, because I used it all up for the big Playmobil arena and had to pick some from it
Finished the last Nighthaunt, the Cairn Wraith. Went for a different scheme, because I can also use him with my Bonereapers in WarCry so I didn't want him completely affiliated with the Nighthaunts. He got the more classic green glowy look and pristine white bones. The rusty scythe and the flower show the allegiance a bit. And he is infantry sized mini #160 for this year, so I already broke my 150 from last year.
And I didn't want to get the Artist Proof Space Marine figure, but after seeing some very funny Tweets by Adam Troke and his DA one and the unpainted pics by ListenToMeWarriors I bought one yesterday and looking very much forward to painting it in my chapter colors.
