I removed my pile of unbuilt shame.

Batman and DC miniatures- 20 models, 5 of which are already half finished. I'm aiming to get most of this done over the next week as well so it's a realistic goal
Blood Bowl- New league starting up, and my Skaven team are almost entirely finished (15 model roster with 3 needing a fair bit of work, the other 12 nearly done)
Warcry- The starter set minus the Iron Golems, plus a Chimera and Gitz warband. Solid week of work will knock it over I just have to get around to it
Malifaux- The big one in terms of completing projects. I've got a lot of crews needing 5-6 models to finish and a couple completely unpainted, but by organising it to specific crews the job appears a lot more viable in a short amount of time
Star Wars Legion- got a bunch of Rebels to paint, they'll be fairly quick basecoat/wash/highlight jobs but there's a fair few to get through and I want to put effort into the basing which will take a while.
Lord of the Rings- about 1200 points of Easterlings in some stage of completion. I can get them done quickly but there's a lot to get through and I'm not motivated to batch paint in those numbers, and then there's the 50-odd orcs I have for allies

Update on everything I've worked on
Batman/DC- I've painted 6 of them with 4 more almost finished. That's half done by tomorrow night
Blood Bowl- I finished the bulk of the team, just 3 more to go. This week's project is getting them done
Warcry- Chimera will be done tomorrow, so that's a start. Plan is to get the Untamed Beasts started soon

All up not going fantastically, but I'm trucking along at a decent pace so I can't really complain at all either. Mostly painting whatever I feel like at the time which I think is the best way to do it

Sitting on a shelf in my display case is a unit of 40 Orc boys that have been half done for the last...5 years or so? I guess. half of them are based with basic colours, the other 20 are unbased and waiting to get done.

I decided I'm going to do it. I'm going to finish painting all 40 and knock this off my list of minis I need to paint.

Nice! Good luck!

I finished the highlights on my Mangler Squigs. Time to start on the Stabbas, which shouldn't take TOO long all things considering, though first I have a few kaiju and superheroes to paint.

I'm still fighting the pile, but I can feel a spending splurge coming on. As it stands I finished 3 more Neophyte Hybrids and an Acolyte Hybrid which leaves me at 60 models painted with none bought this year.

Finished an Impulsor today.

My own fight against my Pile of Shame is going so well I've been getting requests for assistance in other sectors, by which I mean some people want me to do commission work for them. That'll teach me to paint so fast.

My pile has been sitting stagnant for awhile. Slow progress on Blackstone fortress at about one squad of bad guys a week. Then yesterday managed to get two heroes finished in one goal. Now it looks like I will be done by the end of the month possibly sooner if I get more time to paint.

My friends also offered to help me assembly line paint my mechanicus terrain with me so we can have painted terrain for our Necromunda campaign. which will cross a huge number of models off my list.

I dropped the plan of doing NMM for my Tilean army after 50 pikemen stared at me unfinished for weeks. Sick and tired of them right now, but finished all 50 to basic tabletop standard at least. Heading into the scifi backlog now to break the funk from the failed NMM project.

Also bought 150 old metal empire minis and got the great surprise that they were much better painted than expected, so no repaint needed!

Spoiler:

Thaddeus is about half way done too, I might even get through all of the heroes this month if I keep this up. Resisting the temptation to buy the Nurgle Expansion, but I know I’ll cave if I get Birthday vouchers, but certainly when the Zoat comes out. Even with those I should still be on the black for the year

My pile of shame was causing me enough anxiety that it was sucking motivation from my main projects. Half painted, half collected, poorly painted, and failed projects. Most of them haphazardly stashed all around the house.

So I bit the bullet and sold off the stuff I knew was never going to finish, gave miniatures to friends, and even straight up tossed stuff in the trash.

Now all of my main projects are neatly stored and getting the painting and reinforcements they need. I still have a few more things to sell off that will produce money to sit in a hobby slush fund.

Long story short- It was a HUGE relief. I've never been happier about my hobby situation.

Nice work everybody who's managing to reduce their pile. It takes a lot of dedication.

I've been keeping a spreadsheet tracker of everything that I've got, and its current status - finished, painting in progress, primed, built, unbuilt, and applying a few various metrics to it. At the minute the pile is still growing. I'm roughly managing to paint at half the rate I'm buying, so my percentage complete tracker is hovering fairly steady at about 50% - just counting all the 40k since I got back into the hobby a few years ago. I've still got a bunch of unpainted WHFB stuff from years ago, but if I include that as well the numbers might actually look a bit better because I had much more painted WHFB than unpainted. Anyway, the result is that I've got a lot of stuff still to do, and it will only keep getting worse if I keep buying. Which is probably what I'm going to do with pre-ordering some more Sororitas - assuming the postal services are still operating by next weekend anyway, given the ever-increasing virus-related lockdowns. Anyway, that's a digression. Part of my problem is that the FLGS that I usually order from gives extra discounts on pre-orders and also has the occasional sale. So I always end up thinking something along the lines of "I'm going to want to buy this eventually anyway, so I may as well get it now when it's a bit cheaper". Plus the occasional big box release where I expect that they'll sell out quickly, or otherwise go out of production after a couple of months, so I feel like if I'm going to get one it needs to be now when it's available. It would be nice to get out of that mindset, but like I said, I'm still planning on picking up some more sisters because of the pre-order discount.

Most of my own pile of shame is unbuilt. I know that a lot of people build things quite soon after they get them and then they sit awaiting paint for years, but I try to keep a balance between building and painting. I don't game with unpainted models anyway, so there's no real advantage to having a model built if it's not going to be painted any time soon, and I enjoy both aspects of the hobby. When I start to feel a little bit of painting burnout, it's nice to build a unit or two before going back to painting. So as a result I try to build and paint at roughly the same rate - build a couple of units, paint a couple of units etc. Keeps things fresh, and it's a bit easier to hide away unbuilt sprues than unpainted models. I usually only have the things that I'm actively working on actually physically on my workbench at any given time. I've got a dedicated hobby desk, so everything's left set up, and if there are too many models on there it just makes the whole thing seem more daunting - which others have said already and I agree totally. I'll often paint 2 or 3 units at the same time, switching between them with the same colour, or doing something on the second unit while waiting for the first to dry, and even that many models can feel like they're taking forever to paint. It's nice to tick off 20 models in one go, but it usually takes me a few weeks to get through them. It can drag on a bit if I've spent a couple of hours painting, and all I've managed to do is highlight the armour across the batch, for example.

Anyway, I'm working away at a squad of Sternguard, a Lieutenant and two converted Librarians for my oldmarines Salamanders army. It's the army that got me back into 40K at the tail end of 7th, and I hadn't painted much for them for the last couple of years despite having plenty more to do - just because I've been working on my Biel-Tan Eldar most of the time.

Added another ten Daemonnettes to the finished pile last night (which incidentally also marks the first fully finished squad of the things), but totally forgot to take a picture.

First time that's happened since the start of the year.

Finished up a few things over the weekend. A couple Batman models and a couple Guardians of the Galaxy figures. One of my Monsterpocalypse kaiju as well. Hoping tomorrow is warm enough to rattlecan spray a bunch of Stabbas, but I might just airbrush them if the weather doesn't cooperate.

Also feeling like maybe I should finally paint my Hamelin set for Malifaux....

I kept the receipt though, so I can return them if I don't want to work on them any more when their time comes!

Finished my second squad of Eliminators, brings me up to ... 25 for the month, 119 for the year. On the other hand I think I've bought something like 50 models this year, but I'm not planning on picking anything else up.

...unless that rumoured Gravis Expansion pans out, then all bets are off.
