I had high hopes for this app.

Hoooo boy did they drop the ball here. It's bad. I mean, the bones are there for it to grow into a good app, but for now it's literally worthless without the subscription, and laid out really poorly even with.

So now I think that there is a legitimate RAW schism. Technically these are RAW, and saying things like "the codexes take precedence" would not be "playing real 40k".

The fanatical loyalty people have to the GW brand is often cult-like. I don't know if it's pure Sunk Cost Fallacy in action or some kind of financial fetishism at work. The app could literally break your phone and people would still defend them for it, it's absurd.

Yea they really just need to make this gak free until they get it done properly.

I like that the points are in there, so i'll dodge the next CA if / when it comes.

Are the new 9th ed points costs in there as of now? Like with the old codexes?

Because that could make it worthwhile to subscribe, if you have no interest in buying the new Chapter Approved book.

Even if they do how do you know they're right? We've already got reports of incorrect stats, they could have messed up the points too. You need something you know has the correct points like Chapter Approv......

Never mind.

Help.

Is there anyone on here that can explain why I would buy the app? I am struggling to understand why I would pay £4 a month for it, nay, anything at all for it?

Why would I spend £30+ on a codex and pay for the subscription? Why would I pay £30+ for a rule book and pay for the subscription?

Surely they would have better been making the subscription £2 for what it currently is (a glorified search function with battlescribe and the already free core rules built in) and then something a bit more, like £5 to £7/month and giving you access to the rules and all the codexs as living documents with the app. I get that you get the 8th edition rules but how long are they really going to be 'valid'.

I've generally been ok with most of GW's stuff over the last few years but I am utterly perplexed why anyone would pay for this when everything it does is already out there for free or you already have to pay for it? Did I miss something? It's like Netflix saying you can buy the film for £30 and then you can pay £4 subscription every month for us to store it for you and let you use a search feature. Madness.

they've probably submitted it to apple, but whether they'll got fast or slow on vetting you never can tell (according to folk I know who do app development)

According to GW, it'll be faster than it took Cawl to roll out the Primaris Marines, but not as fast as Horus choked out Sanguinius.

If the app was $1 a month I’d do it in a heartbeat. I do the AoS app for $1 a month and I don’t even use it for some months in a row. $1 is cheap enough I can do sign up and forget about it. $5 a month? That’s getting into a mental zone of I better be actively using it. There’s apps I hesitate at a $5 one time fee. $5 a month is crazy. And it ain’t even done yet! Why couldn’t they have just made a 40k version of the AoS app?

Why? Its cheap, easy and fulfills design requirements. The warning signs on this thing have been there ever since they announced it and announced that the actual feature people might pay for won't be present.

The rest of the paywall stuff is just paying a monthly fee to have 'access' to books you already paid for.

Disclaimer: I've not done mobile app development in years.

If, in a non-web app, I had to choose between storing a 1.6MB PDF of something that rarely changes locally or hosting it, I know which I'd pick. It's a silly decision that doesn't seem like long term one.

Secondly, we know (think?) a full rules reference is coming. It would sense to present the core rules through that if/when it's ready.

Ah. I tend to assume programmers, especially app programmers, will choose the easiest and least efficient option. That is to say, easiest option first. But if there is a further choice between efficient and not, they'll choose not, every time.
'Long term decisions' are just the ones that no one gets around to changing.

Nothing, huh? We must have gotten different apps then since the one I downloaded and paid 4 quid for has every datasheet, relic, stratagem etc. currently in the game with the latest point updates to boot.

That price is still a bit steep without the army builder. The typos don't inspire confidence that they didn't rush the hell out of this.

Of course it was rushed, otherwise it would have the army builder already, along with not having those typos and the other problems people have pointed out. This thing wasn't ready for prime time. Hopefully it will get better, but it will have to be a lot better to be worth five bucks a month.

Yeah, very arbitrary and unpredictable approval time, with sometime pretty crazy change demands on Apple's part.

Yea maybe in a year they'd fix everything they need to fix. I've been through some rough implementations and I can see how something of this scale can go very wrong. Depending on their army builder I may still build one for fun until they C&D me, because I just don't think they have the UI chops to make it a really good experience for a good while yet.

You're making your own army builder? Don't like battlescribe? More power to you Daed. I don't think they can C&D you if you're the only one using it. Like to know how it turns out.

I hate battlescribe very much. There's so much technology to make a rich user experience in a browser these days. It'll probably take me months - after my current implementation is done in August. I'll see how theirs turns out first though.

Was hoping this would replace most of the work I do with my home brew unit cards and excel list builder. But no sir. This is a clunky unintuitive mess full of typos and poor decisions.

Anyone on the fence save your money until they fix it or More likely save your money cause this is obviously shovel ware and they’ll abandon it pretty quickly I imagine.

If you look at it from the right angle the app is genuinely funny. This is a billion dollar company, and they can't even release an app that doesn't look like it was created by a crack team of a 7-year-old and a space llama.

Atm little reason but app has potential to be worth it if done well.

A) official army builder players can't edit themselves at will. Thus if gw goes to effort to ensure it's 1. Easy to use 2. Correct it's got value. Battle scribe for example is as trustworthy as your opponent is and makes life of cheaters easier. Aka if you can trust your opponent it's fine but dishonest players have easier time to pull of cheats
B) rules available easily(if gui done right) on your phone saving effort of carrying n+1 books with you. And again compared to bs while bs is good for list building in-game reference less so. I have many times waited ages as player with only bs or it's print outs but no codex keep searching special rule or stat. Bleargh.

Atm doesn't fulfill above but if it does then it's worth the peanuts

I think it is acceptable for any product to succeed or fail based entirely on consumer demand and appetite rather than personal feelings of dakka forum posters.

Supporting them is buying the miniatures and rules, in fact buying a unit a month supports them more than subscribing to the app. Subscribing to white dwarf is a similar cost but imo has far more content right now.

Using money to tell them what you like is more important at this stage, it's down to them to understand the reasons they've made an app that few people like based on subscriptions. If they get plenty of people supporting the app as is, there is little motivation to improve.
