Having just finished reading the new brb, here's a straw for CSM players to clutch at.

There are painted examples of all 9 loyalist marine legions in at least 1 picture (and for iron hands it is just the one picture buried in the crusade section unless I've missed something)

There are painted examples of only 7 of the traitor legions. The 2 missing? World Eaters and Emperor's Children.

Are they not included by chance, or to avoid spoilers...? Let's hope its option 2

I agree that the "GW nefariously released a horribly balanced SM 2.0 codex to break the game to make people want 9th" gives GW way too much credit. This isn't some slick operation run by evil geniuses. It's not like they've nailed the 9th edition release; to the contrary, they've bungled it quite spectacularly, first seriously underestimating demand for its flagship release, then putting out an app that is even more embarrassing than that.

I think it's pretty clear from the last couple weeks that GW has gotten big enough that the left hand doesn't really know what the right hand is doing. Far from an evil genius guiding the whole thing, there isn't *anybody* guiding the whole thing with any sort of unified vision. We're getting a new SM codex with the 9th launch because that's what the people developing 9th thought was necessary to sell the new edition; we got an August 2019 SM codex because that's what the people designing 8th thought was necessary to keep selling the old edition. It's far more likely they just weren't working closely with one another than that it was some elaborate plan to fleece the customers.

GW doesn't need to fleece its customers with double codex releases - releases that, mind you, have far lower profit margins than the miniatures that is their real business.

No, GW released a horribly balanced SM codex to sell space marines.

Like it's that simple. GW were not unaware of the problems. But I assume space marine sales had sagged slightly, being not very good, and so they needed to boost their numbers. And particularly the numbers of the new space marine stuff.

And remember, new rules are always there to get you buy models.

Letting something be ultra overpowered for a month or so gets the lemmings to shift their purchases to that asap

I am sure that a desire to sell SM models was definitely part of what created the SM 2.0 and especially the IH supplement fiasco. Their playtesters told them it was overtuned, they decided to release it anyway because it was win/win for model sales.

This is really, really weird.

No, it makes perfect sense as the next phase of the Primaris Project. This is the edition where they start moving the oldmarine choices to the corners of the core book while also making their points values unattractive. 8th edition was the soft boil - 9th edition is when the heat really gets turned up and people are really compelled to replace whatever remnants of their oldmarine armies they were still using.

Heavy intercessors replace tacs and devastators; scouts have already been replaced by phobos. No reason to leave the scouts where people could actually use them.

While I believe old marines are going away (more as self fulfilling prophecy by consumers) this strategy doesn't make sense. They don't have to move scouts at all to accomplish this goal.

I'd guess it's for the same reason that has been used to explain many of the odd points changes: it's to make loyalists armies "look right". Too many loyalist armies made up almost entirely of scouts for troops, just like too many armies of csm made up of cultists. Gw doesn't like that. So they move scouts to elites, now all your troops options are full fledged power armoured space marines, with your cheapest option being 15 ppm tacs. But don't worry, you're getting another troops choice, which I'm sure will be totally balanced on release and not OP at all.

That last part was sarcasm, btw.

I see it now! GW making CSM suck and get crappy releases is a ploy to get players more excited for the upcoming WE and EC Codex, because they wouldn't be looking forward to it otherwise... or something...?

I can see the fluff/gameplay justification for such a change. While they are just initiates scouts are used more like elite troops; in limited numbers, for covert missions, etc. They do not serve what passes for a 'troops' role in the army, they are specialists in fluff and on the table. I think for me personally they always felt like a unit that was a 'holdover' troop from back when Space Marines had far fewer options.

I understand that Assault Intercessors are incompetent assault marines by virtue of not bringing the most basic piece of equipment for an assault marine and trying to footslog, but putting primaris assault marines and devastators in the troops slot is still pretty baffling even if the Heavy Intercessors are equally toned down.

Cawl's still working on a jetpack with enough horsepower to keep those thicc bois in the air. Apparently the suppressor and inceptor ones don't meet OSHA requirements for marines that have to operate in close quarters.

I kinda hope Heavy Intercessor is the weapon specialist that you can swap with regular Intercessor guy or something similar. 1+ for heavy bolters and flamers.

Or its alternative build for Eradicators.

Heavy Intercessors with Gravis armor as Troops would essentially allow an all-Gravis army. I'm kinda down for that.

Precisely. Removing the 3.5 codex 13 years ago was merely the beginning of a long-running and incredibly funny practical joke. Now we are all battered and bruised and willing to throw our money away at whichever Traitor Legion they deign to give us (but only after 3+ years of teasing, of course). Jolly good show, GW

This is really, really weird.
People were taking scouts to cheaply fill troop slots.
GW wants Primaris to fill this slot, not scouts.
So you move scouts to elites to stop them being used as a cheap way to fill troop slots.
Its a better option then making them so expensive no one wants to use them...

That was more relevant in 8th. Tacs are 15 so what real goal is it accomplishing other than making them pay 15 more points over scouts.

Because they don't want people making armies where the majority of the troops are scouts. They want loyalist armies to have full fledged power armoured space marines as troops. The phobos troops already fill the role of scouts in the troops slot.

Gw apparently doesn't want loyalists armies to consist of high numbers of scouts any more than they want csm armies to consist of high numbers of cultists, or ork armies to consist of high numbers of grots.

The first model in that teaser trailer is a death guard model, no doubt. I'm not sold on the Ork being a character though, he seems more like a new kommando or new boy to me.

New boys is something that is sorely needed. The current ones are super old and ugly. If they would make them in the style of the AOS Orruks I might consider an Ork army.

Personally, I'd much rather not. The orruks have Hulk-like, more human proportions (and posture), while orks are gorillas. I'd prefere them to continue being gorillas... but I'm quite sure that won't be the case, seeing the ones from the buggies.

Which, IMHO, is unfortunate.

Nothing wrong with the current boyz.

All the other models seem to be lieutenant-level HQ choices, it's probably the same for the Orks. Maybe a kind of new Big Boss Nob if this is the one with the killsaw from the rumor engine? He doesn't look big enough to be a Warboss, and not weird enough for a Mek or a Wierdboy (although we could use a plastic model for that).

Link?

It's from 0:25 of their codex reveal video, when the pages are being flipped through. Here's a screencap, but it's obviously quite blurry. The legs definitely seem chonkier though, and again, the gun seems like it packs a bigger punch than the standard intercessor gear..

Looks like the hood of gravis. We know there is a heavy bolt rifle thanks to the new gravis captain carrying a master crafted one. Probably an alternate build to the eradicators to carry them instead of meltas.

On chapter variant units, we know that 0 cost stratagems are a thing. They could do things like: Blood Claws- Choose an assault squad or assault intercessor unit. That unit gains the troops battlefield role if it does not already, increases its attacks characteristic by one but decreases ballistic skill and leadership values by 1 each.

I made a joke a couple weeks ago about battleboxes like Indomitus or Shadowspear coming...starting to think there might be something there.

There's 5 factions shown(Sisters, Orks, Drukhari, AdMech, and Death Guard). Any thoughts as to whether or not this might be how they get some more Easy to Builds and new units available for three of those factions while also releasing up some now-unavailable Easy to Builds?
