I was wondering whether your faction has any unit types that are inexplicably missing. Not so much to make the army more effective, or mitigate 'intentional deficiencies', but simply units whose existence would be logical or particularly thematic?
What got me thinking about this was the Drukhari, who despite having a society rife with betrayal and assassination, weirdly don't actually have (or have ever had?) an 'assassin option' in their army.

A Skitarii Primus/Primus Alpha. They're a thing mentioned repeatedly in the lore, Skitarii that are effectively designed to operate as 'overseers' so that their Techpriest masters can stay safely ensconced in their laboratories or ships in orbit.
Kasrkin. For the signature unit of Cadians, it's depressing they never bothered to give them rules past the initial Eye of Terror campaign book.
Regarding Drukhari Assassins--weren't Mandrakes supposed to be effectively the 'assassins' of the Drukhari?

Yup, Mandrakes are used as assassins in the fluff, but rules-wise they are just another deep-striking unit. I suppose a strat to let them target characters might have been a way to go.

Any of the Tau auxiliaries, including humans, Demiurge, more varieties of kroot (including an HQ), and more Vespid Stingwings. I'd personally like to see a Vespid queen that's as large as a Crisis suit. Ideally something with a mid-range save, a single massive CC punch (stinger) and ridiculously fast.
Custodes grav tanks, but FW has that covered.
Space wolves having wolves lager than Thunderwolves. I wouldn't mind seeing one of the fluff-mentioned varietys that are the size of a Rhino as a personal mount for a special character.

I know it does not make sense on the usual battlefield size and without any fitting terrain rules, but I think fluff wise IG should have Bridgelayers, Minelayers and Minesweepers.

Tyranid insect swarms that can only be defended against with flame weapons or shockwave inducing blasts.
Mechanics for smoke screens or poisonous gasses.
Off-table artillery.

Well one of my armies is Corsairs so I'm missing most of the army at this point.
But there's also Palatines, jump pack Canoness, customisable Living Saints, Autarchs with options that aren't in 2 kits, Lone Wolves and Wulfen that aren't awful to look at.

I now am in love with the idea of Hobarts Funnies of the IG.
Also, we need artillery smokeshells

This is going to be fixed, I believe, since I've heard some mention of them being Talons of the Emperor again.
They're auxiliary to the Custodes anyway.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

We had minesweepers at one point. There was the "Armoured Mine Plough" upgrade from FW, which was a standard plough with cluster charge launchers on top. Shove the mines out of the way, detonate them as you toot toot on by.

They're really not. They got stuck in the same "Talons of the Emperor" list as the Custodes in 30k because they worked closely together in two specific campaigns (the War in the Webway and the Prospero campaign), not because they're part of the same command structure all of the time.
And even if they did get stuck into the same list as the Custodes they're still missing probably 90% of the equipment you'd need to build a Prosecutor or an Oblivion Knight unit, they don't have the Knight-Centura (and the fact that they've previewed a rule that says they can still field a detachment with no HQs means they're not planning on making one anytime soon), there are still no Pursuers, and the Kharon still has no 40k rules. Automatically Appended Next Post: There are also some units missing equipment rather than just being missing units. Custodes with Adrasite/Pyrithite spears or the powerfists mixed into other squads instead of as their own squads, Primaris Deathwatch with any of the kit off the Deathwatch Veterans, all the Castaferrum weapons that aren't in the plastic kit, that kind of thing.

Exodites are curiously missing - GW has referenced them for years. Unlike Squats who they mostly sort of just gave a nod now and then to - Exodites get rolled out with lore mentions all the time. I can never tell if it sjust GW teasing us with a "converting idea army" expecting those who want to make them to buy lizards and monsters from AoS/Old World or if its just an idea they really want to do that has yet to ever get a green light.
After that Tyranids are missing a few things. Shrieks for one - basically winged warriors - we had rules for them for years and yet GW never gave them a model. They've even taken away the wing conversion set from Forgeworld.
After that there's a few hero style unique models for tyranids that never got made - in fact its a huge shame that Tyranids don't erally have any modern characters. The Swarmlord is the only one and he's just part of the regular Tyrant kit. Red Terror is very old and finecast; Old One Eye is jsut a head option from the fantastic Carnifex kit and the rest of the heroes never got a model ever. They got teased in two codex editions then dropped into only lore as GW adopted the (sensible) no models no rules policies.

I don't know why an interceptor HQ doesn't exist as an option for GK. Also a jet or jump pack option for primaris characters, specialy after shriek was turned primaris.

Which other Tyranid heroes? The Doom is the only one I can think of. Deathleaper has a model.

Completely agree. Now that Tau is fileld with battlesuit types (and I love them), it's time to delve more on the Star Trek part of the Tau

The original Trancendent C'tan from Apocalypse. Iirc that thing was way nastier than the thing in the current codex. I think there used to be generic "Shards" and then epic "Trancendents". Little fuzzy on that though.
