So I've put this in general rather than AoS because whilst my situation relates specifically to one army in one game, the general topic is open to any army from any game even down to whole game systems.

So a while back GW stated revamping AoS armies at a crazy speed and one of the armies ghat not only got updated but retained the bulk of its fantastic range was the Skaven. Having wanted a Skaven army for years I jumped in because AoS, whilst still having large skaven armies, no longer required you to make legions of slave rats that you mostly put in big blocks on the table and then removed from the table as they died off fast. Indeed right now you can make clan armies with very few models if one chooses such as using the large Stormfiends in a Skyre army.

However Skaven are still a big range and I've gathered up a bunch of sets including a load of older metal models which still have some great sculpts.

Thing is I've also got Daughters of Khaine, and Ossiarchs and Slaanesh (this one being a reboot of an army I started years back). I'm left thinking - do I really have time for the rats? Would I be better to sell off what I've got and put that money into working on other armies rather than spreading my funds, time and attention too thin on too many forces. I can get my "rat fix" though TW Warhammer which has the bonus that I don't have to build or paint anything and I can run them as a huge army of skittering crazy rats with warpfire throwers, gattling cannon and vast multitudes of rats just how they are meant to be. Meanwhile I know that at some stage they'll get some awesome new sculpts from GW which will tempt me all over again.

But so too will the other forces, indeed all three of my other forces are "small" armies in terms of model range which means potentially that they'll get some big updates in the future adding lots of new fancy models.

Thus I'm left somewhat torn. I know if I sell off what I've got I will lose out money wise and if I buy in again it will cost more to replace; but at the same time I'm left thinking that I'm just loading up my plate more and more and more with shiny fancy models and that more isn't translating into more fun nor more time.

I'm also wondering if this is just me being "panicked" short term because Necrons have tempted me in 40K (which is again a reboot of an army I started a while back and abandoned).

At the same time I've had great joy selling off my old models that I wasn't using and am still eager to sell off my once pride and joy Epic models (my first venture into the world of mini-wargaming). A joy at releasing the money locked up in them and also at being able to lose a portion of guilt sitting over me and focus on fewer armies and getting things closer to being finished and done. In addition its meant that I could put money from "dead" things into new fresh ideas and models. Plus there's the bonus of saving on space.
Normally I'm the kind of person that advises others to box up rather than sell on hobbies as the tables to turn and the interest can come around again. At the same time this isn't quite the same, I'm not giving up on wargames just thinking that I'm perhaps focusing too much on collecting models and ending up spread too thin over too much.

So what are your thoughts and experiences? Have you tales of stuff you've sold and regretted greatly or the opposite? What would you do in my shoes?

I honestly regret selling a few armies.
My slaanesh (all Diaz sculpts) and epic tyranids instantly spring to mind.
The issue with selling AoS armies is that the power balance swings heavily.
To be fair though, you currently have the 2 top tier armies so I honestly wouldn’t worry about skaven unless you are massively attached to them.

Epic wise, I say enjoy.
It’s a great game that I now play above other systems.
Great fun and the balance is far better than most GW products too.
Just avoid “Epic 40,000” as it’s a complete mess.

Between these two statements, it sounds like it would be a terrible idea to get rid of them.

You talk about time, but if you aren't doing anything with them, it really isn't costing you time. But it does sounds like you'll have a problem selling them off and regretting it.

Essentially unless theres any pressing need why bother? If you've got the storage spave and aren't worrying about it and have no pressing need for the cash don't worry about it. Don't necessarily buy any more but its not as if it'll rot or go off so relax about it. Also painting a variety of models is a good way to keep it fresh. DoK and Slaanesh will have very similar colour choices and style and Skaven will be hugely different to paint and play so the variety will be fun.

He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. My advice is to pick out a few of your favorite pieces and keep those as a just-in-case/side project. Save resin & metal models as they will eventually go OOP and appreciate in value. Resell the rest to someone local if possible, it helps build community and you might still get to see them on the table.

How 'small' are these small AoS armies?

Normally I would say 'box up'. Weed out unnecessary units if you feel you need to.

I can run them as a huge army of skittering crazy rats with warpfire throwers, gattling cannon

True, but I'm also thinking of the future. Plus I've been trying to finish up things model wise and get myself from a person who owns boxes to a person who owns models.

This and the Warcry idea above aren't too bad ideas. Of course the risk is that I start picking out things I like and in the end I end up passing on nothing. At an individual level I do really love the models - heck the metals I bought a good few of because they are full of character and some of the best sculpted (character wise) of GW's metal era I think.

Sadly I was meaning in TW Warhammer So I can send you thousands but they are all just 0s and 1s (and knowing Skaven there'd be a 2 in the code somewhere). And yeah gattling cannon are some of the metals that I really do rather like so you'll have to pry them from my cold dead hands

As for small I meant small in terms of the model range on offer from GW - heck Daughters technically have the fewest boxed sets of any range, they just have a lot of duel builds and the Cauldron that builds most of their leaders (ok all except Morathi). I've actually a decent number of models in all 3 (unpainted but that's a separate battleground). Heck the Ossiarchs were mostly paid for by me selling off a large bunch of old High and Wood elf models that I'd collected up over the years and never used. So I was rather pleased to get a force I was going to use (not just in rules, I'd had the elves for years and never done anything much with them even when Old World was around) and build (of which "most" are now built or being built).

Personally, I've rarely regretted selling armies that I was considering doing so to. You can have really enjoyed them but still be ready to move on. And you can use those funds for the next project

I’m a hoarder at heart, so I say keep them.

My hobby ADD goes in cycles, so if I sell minis because I completely lost interest in their range and feel like I’ll never want to use any of their minis again, then by this time next year I will NEED those minis back.

I'm in the keep them camp.

I've found that I get a lot of use out of models when I play a variety of systems. Not feeling the Rats in AoS, pickup Dragon Rampant or Sword and Spear Fantasy and go to town. I love getting a new set of rules and knowing that I've already got models ready to go. I picked up Oathmark this summer and my dwarfs and goblins have new life in a rank and flank game.

I think you might also feel overwhelmed by the project overall. Write a list for a small to mid size force (for whatever system) and get it painted up. Start getting them on the table. Guaranteed you will start to feel inspired to finish off the rest of the collection.

In my defense, I had just finished my second martini when writing that. The question was not if I should proof read what I had written, but how silly I felt, and how many Skaven memes I knew off the top of my head.

You should keep them. Especially the metals.

$: Unless there's a pressing need for funds, keep them. You've gone to the effort & expense to collect them specifically because you like them. As you've pointed out, selling them will probably lose you $. And as you like Skaven? Like with your other re-booted projects, if you ditch them now, you know you'll return to them in the future. And on that future date they'll just be more expensive. When that happens you'll just have lost $ (and time re-collecting them) TWICE!
So I guess you need to decide how you feel about simply wasting $.
The most you should do here is stop buying more - except metals. If there's any other metal Skaven you want? you should buy them now & have that cost behind you.

Storage: Unpainted, even a lot of skaven can be stored in a relatively small space. I know because they're pretty much like my goblin hoard I just painted up. I had 200+ goblins & several warmachines stored in a steralite plastic case the size of a shoe box. ! (I had no idea that many goblins would fit in that container.) It's the painted ones that take up space.
So unless storage space is critical.....

Time: You already know you have time to play/enjoy your Skaven. Like with any of your other forces/projects you just have to CHOOSE to pull that case come game night. Or when you go to build/paint.
And this is a hobby. There's nothing wrong with having a long term, slowly completing project (my own 40k Orks tell me so).

I keep everything, because I have a problem. That being said, i know I will use them somewhere and in some game at some time. Maybe not all of them, maybe not all at once, but they will get used. There are too many Fantasy games out there where I could use them such as Frostgrave, Oathmark, Kings of War, Rampant Hordes, Dragon Rampant, Horde of the Things, Rampant Swords, One-Page rules, etc, etc, etc. This doesn't even include all the sci-fi games waprfire throwers, poison wind globadiers, and Jezzalla Throwers could be used in.

I also am confident I would paint them, because I have a 5 model pile of shame right now. If I wanted them painted, they would get painted.

Therefore, I have no idea what you should do. I only know about me. Sorry to be useless to you!

I guess what I am trying to say is.... keep them as there are tons of horizons you can explore with them.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

I generally keep max 1 or 2 armies or collections per game system.
If a 3rd is made, then one of the others has to go.
I'll sometimes keep individual units or characters to go in the cabinet from those as a memento - others here have mentioned a small force for Warcry or Mordheim, which might also not be a bad idea?

Except for Epic - which you need to keep all of, because it's an awesome game

As Epic as Epic is its darn hard to shift the stuff secondhand

See the whole "max armies per system" is something I'm sort of wanting to work toward. Otherwise I find that my nature to jump army to army ends up with me having too many incomplete projects and then something like a warpfire dragon goes off-sale from Forgeworld etc... So in the end if I have fewer I can complete and devote more toward fewer.

I guess for me its trying to get to a point where I draw greater joy from individual armies rather than multiple armies.

Gotta agree with this, so many armies I've had seller's remorse on because I needed some quick dosh. My Blood Pact, Nurgle LATD, Kroot Mercs, Nurgle Daemons, Cult of Slaanesh DE, Epic LATD and my previous iteration of my Death Guard (which ironically, the sale of that made me put a helluva lot of effort into my current DG force). Every one of those I ultimately regret selling, mainly due to the unrepeatable conversions and the now OOP models (60 metal Plaguebearers in that Nurgle Daemon force for example...). I now no longer sell on anything and have not done so for quite some time, mainly as eBay favours buyers so much now I don't have a lot of inclination to attempt to part with stuff.
