Destroyers and nightbringer

I set up a little dockside invasion demo of EA for a local scale modeling event while the rest of the club brought historics like BA and TY. Not a proper game but more of an exhibition table where the visitors could come chat and try out a few moves. Good discussions were had about how the scale of the games would be reflected on the other tables, like how the small BA platoon-level rifleman skirmish would occupy just a small spot on the Epic table where companies surge forwards as artillery and aircraft duel over the titans as the whole countryside burns.

Now my hobby room is up and running? Think is time I tackled my LI Backlog.

Not only am I keen to have it all painted, and add loads more infantry (I’ve four boxes ready to go), but I find Epic Scale stuff really good for getting back into a painting rhythm.

No Epic model ever takes all that long to paint, because there’s really not much to be painted. So the on again off again painter can see rapid results, which is always pleasing unto Nuggan.

Will make a start on my lunch break tomorrow. Get the sprues broken down for painting, the Missile Support and Contemptors assembled. Maybe get the bases sprayed as well. Reckon if I use a pre-cut sheet of baking parchment I can get them all done at the same time.

Mostly it was just chatting with people, it's interesting how similar but different various sides of modelling hobbies tend to be. Quite a few people who build dioramas and scale model kits just haven't ever really though about the whole concept of people actually playing with their toys, so that was fun.

Have made a start on getting my models back in their display cabinets. Which has put something of a rocket up me when it comes to getting my further LI Infantry painted.

Shouldn’t take too long, with the breaking up and undercoating of the Sprues being typically the longest act.

Once all done, I’ll sort the display cabinet. Then get the new tanks all painted up. Also need to find the Perspex shelves, so I’m making the best use of the vertical space. Essential when displaying Epic Scale models, I trust you’ll agree.

Going through the new book last night. And I noticed that Legion Tactical Detachments can now have one Medicae per 4 bases in the Detachment.

Gonna make use of that for my new infantry. Certainly given the Command Stand crops up relatively rarely, I should have spare Medicae for that.

Or I’ll just paint one of the Bolter dudes white and call it a day!

I am continuing my project to create a Titan Legio expeditionary force for which a playable subset exists any edition of Epic. The main missing pieces are some aircraft and light tanks (probably Leman Russes and some of those 30k-era Mechanicum tanks). I just finished the Warmaster and one of the Warlords.

Yes, I was nervous about that one as I am not very good at conversions, but I felt a Titan named after a medieval king (Canute the Great, 40k-ized as Knudum Maximus) ought to have a long beard (and I imagine the chain links are trophies built from the melted-down remnants of fallen enemies).

It is made with jewelry chain that I marinated in sprue goo and superglue. Seems both stiff and tough.

Makes me want to add some Titans to my collection.

Got a lot to paint between now and then though.

Rules wise though? I’m gravitating toward Vulcan Mega Bolters. Those guys do everything!

The array is 20 shots, 5+ with -1, Shieldbane and Light AT.

Oh, and a random aside?

I don’t suppose some brave, noble soul out there in Internet Land has made custom army building cards, in the 2nd Ed Space Marine stylee?

If not, now I’ve got a proper computer again, I may have a stab at it.

I’m thinking more the Detachment Card style, but with multiples to reflect the modern unit size options. Would have the FOC icon probably top left, simple images of the tanks, with the number of those images/silhouettes representing the unit size, with the points cost at the bottom.

So for example? I’d need to create four such cards for the Scorpius. One each for 2, 4, and 8 strong Detachments.

Rear, rather than individual unit break points I think I’d just have a simple reference to the Liber Strategia page number.

If I don’t completely bugger it up, would be happy to release them into the wild. Shouldn’t be an IP issue, as other than points cost they contain no rules info. Just an old school army building visual aid.

Regarding weapon packs, Battle Bling has 3D-printed proxies for pretty all of the out-of-production resin bits. My gatling cannons are the ones they made. They are also where I got the head for my Warmaster, for that matter.

And that’s the new book and two of each Marine Super Heavies ordered.

Saturnine stuff will wait until I’ve seen the rules. Currently no idea how they might fit into an army, or what they bring to the table.

Played a couple of E:A GT scenarios today, 5k and 3k. Ground down some Nids with my Selen II tankers. Highlights included: killing a Hive Tyrant with a random Valkyrie rocket in the eye, driving a 21 unit strong synapse swarm to the ground with a Baneblade company charge and beating a subsequently charging Hierophant back with the same company for good measure.

The usual suspects when it comes to print files, pretty much.

Caved and ordered the big Saturnine box. Only thing I don’t need more of are the Vindicators. But even then? I can still make use of them.

Received my new LI bewk.

Quick flip through the rules for the new units, and I’m happy they’re unique enough to have their own niche.

Going forward? It really feels like it’s just the Arquitor chassis and perhaps Predator variants that are missing from the Legions themselves.

And of course a second Troop Set with more of a focus on the fancier troops!

Picked my LI book up yesterday, but not had a chance to read through it.
Also finally night the Whirlwind and Vindicator boxes, really nice kits and looking forward to building and painting them over the Christmas period.

Resisted the Saturnine box so far and I’ll decide if I want them once I have digested the rules for them.
Through was thinking if I got them, painting the figures as Thousand Sons, to break up the hordes of black Dark Angels and metal Iron Warriors?

Hoping there will be a Astartes support set released next year with Assault, heavy weapons including some variants and Terminators.

Ascalon is quite the beast. Template weapon, which are always welcome in Epic scale. And with Light AT.

It’ll nicely toast infantry for Breakfast, and stands to do nasty things to lighter vehicles.

Think on all the Superheavies I want the quad Heavy Bolter sponsons. Kicks out a lot of defensive fire, making them less vulnerable to being swarmed.

The Saturnine Terminators look fiddly, but really aren’t too bad. It helps that, left or right notwithstanding, any arm can go on any body, into a ball and socket joint.

The Command do need a careful clipping though. The hafts are super thin. I braced with two fingers, and released the base of the hafts first. Dunno if another way would be any different, but that worked for me.

Been building mine as well.

The dreads are great fun. Haven't done the termies yet. But they do look fiddly.

I have bent a one or two of the dread guns snipping them out, you do have to plan carefully which way round to snip them out.

I'd been looking forward to finally having fellblades, always been a favourite vehicle of mine I'm pleased I can 'retire' my non-offical ones, but man did I find the kit itself to be overly annoying to build and took way too long. A couple of rather awkward parts and in far too many small pieces for how big they are. Still, the final product is fantastic. I'll be ordering a few more boxes over the coming months!

I was not overly impressed with the book though. I'm not legions imperialis player, but I have brought the similar books for their other specialist games and they have been fantastic even for someone not playing current rulesets. The old world arcane journals and the MESBG 1st softback book are packed with lore, painting guides, art/photos, and they feel like they offer something to people playing the older rule sets. The LI book does have some nice photos of the new models, but it was entirely LI.

I get it, the book is FOR LI. But the other specialist game books feel more like 'hobby books', and I brought this one on the strength of those other books.

Weapons wise, as I’m not sure my pic makes it clear, I’ve favoured Disintegrators as much as possible.

Whilst short ranged, they’re precious “no target trait” weapons with an impressive 4+ -2 Save. And if can get them on First Fire, Power Capacitator doubles their output.

So whilst perhaps not the best in HTH with a fairly modest CAF+3? Between that and their firepower they should be able to tackle most things, short of Titans.
