Since there are a lot of assumptions being tossed around on this specific topic in multiple threads on dakka, let's get some numbers. Are space marines really that much more popular than anyone else?

Assuming that each army had the same great rules and the same constant model support, which one would be your favorite?
Your favorite army should be the one you spend the most time (playing, building and painting combined) and money on.

Factions which have been unable to field an army by themselves since 8th were not considered.

If your favorite army is a combination of factions (for example khorne daemonkin or ynnari), vote for the part of that army you like most.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Space Marines. ...yup, i'm That Guy, sorry.
I've been maining Blood Angels from day 1 as a result of getting into the hobby with the 2nd ed starter box. If it weren't for that, who knows...? I do love old-style Space Wolves (think pre-Wulfen) so I still don't think I would have fallen far from the Astartes tree.

No need to apologize. There's a reason they're the most popular.

I voted AdMech myself since they are one of the most unique factions in any game I've seen, but almost voted Space Marines, since I love Iron Hands and Deathwatch.

Chaos Knights, the models and imagery inspire me and I think they play close to how they work in the background.

A close second would be my beloved Iron Warriors.

Chaos Knights for me as well. Since getting them, I got the knights bug. They're so impressive on the battlefield.

Honour. Through. Annihilation.

Iron warriors are my 3rd string army, my second is my World Eaters.

There are SOoo many great ones to choose from these days. GW has really been knocking it out of the park with awesome new models, but... there will always be a special place in my heart for Ultramarines. They're what I started with in 1994.

Funny though that it was actually a picture of a Knight Lords Terminator unit that lured me into the game.

Weird that you don't put Tsons and Deathguard in with Chaos Marines, but Imperial are all alike. It will skew your results. Granted, they will soon be added into a singular dex, but I'd still put heretic Astartes together since they basically are a similar faction.

For me it's Orks. The comedic fluff of them, the fact that they make such logical, brutal sense. The way their society thrives where almost all others are falling apart.

They marry fun and scariness quite well - in a way that the whole "playful" nurglings and beasts of nurgle never quite managed. Even the silliest of Ork stories is easily and readily accepted simply because "it's Orks". No other army could have geniune, canonical fluff about jumping into the warp, emerging before they left, and the warboss killing his doppelganger to get a spare of his favourite shoota - the resultant confusion stopping the waaagh! in its tracks.

any other faction - it's silly. Orks - it's silly, but acceptable.

DG and TS are to CSM as GK or sisters are to space marines or GSC are to guard. There is some overlap, but they are different armies with different model ranges.

It also won't skew my results. If anything, it will make them less detailed, but considering how the poll is coming from the countless discussion about marine releases, fracturing these numbers across dozens of chapters really doesn't yield any advantage and the sum will be the same anyways.

Agree, polls on dakka tend to draw around 200 participants, I wouldn't draw any conclusions before that.

Definitely chaos daemons. So many amazing models, and a unified daemon army just looks so damn cool on the table. Nothing quite like sending forth an army of hell beasts to destroy the universe.

Tau - ranged "superiority", The Greater Good and 'Mechs.

Though I have to admit my biggest collection consists of marines. I do like them, but just because that's what I end up having the most of (mostly due to starter sets) doesn't mean it's my favorite.

Hard to answer this one. I really like a lot of the lore for the Mechanicum but I find the 40k rules/model range a perpetual disappointment by comparison to my 30k Ordo Reductor force, so I'm not sure how much it counts. Similarly I really liked the old-style Ordo Malleus where the GK were well-integrated into the list alongside other things, but the newer lists that have tried to make the GK into a standalone army made up of slight variations on one unit have made them into a bit of a mess.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

Try to vote as if GW had provided them with great rules and a model range without glaring holes in it.

Necrons! Loved em first time I seen them on the table long ago. Imagine will be seeing a lot more of them now that starter set includes them.

Tied for second is Orks Tyranids and imperial Guard. All you space marine players stop being so basic. ; P

Death Guard for me, though not the tentacled variety cavorting with daemons as much as gritty, bitter veterans with their trusty dreadnoughts not giving a gak what's thrown against them.

Oddly enough, I started with 'nids to have something other than power armour...

The Guard will always, always have a special place in my heart. I was so proud of my old army and wish I still had it.

There are many factions I like in 40k, particularly Sisters of Battle and Ad Mech but I actually voted for the Tau. I like the idea behind them, I just wish they'd continued with the cool xenos auxiliaries thing which was just a unique style and fit so well with their diplomatic expansions instead of the dumb mecha battlesuit crap they've reduced them to.
