TBH that was sarcastic and I am somewhat concerned you think the razorgor will probably still be around when the last star in the universe collapses.

Technically we already have Tzaangor and we will soon have Slaangor in February. The only thing missing is Khornegor and Nurglegor/Pestigor. For those I guess we will need to wait for a new codex for Blades of Khorne and Maggotkin of Nurgle and then those specific units could be rolled into the new Beast of Chaos codex.

Lol I think you missed my joke. I only care about BoC.

My first choice would be Gloomspite Gitz. I have some old trolls and squig hoppers from WHFB. I like the new larger trolls. The stone trolls redo has a lot of character as well. And whats not to like about a ton of squigs jumping all over the place.

That leads me to my second choice. It would be bonesplitters (I hope I got the name correct). I have some from the old days and some converting work for 40k snakebite boar boyz.

My third would be Ironjaws. I have a unit and a half of black orcs. That should be a good start. Everything i currently have is from the previous game so I have some base converting to do. I wish my regular fantasy orcs had a place but their not fancy enough for AOS.

Basically all of my choices are based off of the aesthetics, since I only know bits and pieces of the fluff.

Ogres: Ogres, Ogryn, etc, I just like the look Games Workshop does for them, and they are by far my favorite design for Ogres I have seen over the years.

Cities of Sigmar: I love the Empire's design aesthetic of steampunk + Holy Roman Empire. You can field armies that could actually look relatively realistic and then throw in a Steam Tank or Wizard or the like to put a twist on it.

Daughters of Khaine: I just like snake people and snersons. An entire army of snake people just makes me happy.

Just reviewing the thread, because everyone reviews their own threads, right? Nothing even remotely weird about it.

And there was a comment about the sheer physicality of Stormcast which struck a chord, because I entirely agree.

For the duration of The Old World, the goodies were simply mortal, with nothing to go one-on-one with a Chaos Warrior, swollen with gifted power.

And it’s not until you’ve seen a modern Chaos Warrior next to a Stormcast that you realise the boot is on the other foot.

That the Stormcast mostly (universally?) lost their mortal lives fighting Chaos just adds a certain “oi, knobber! Remember me?” type vibe.

These are pure and noble souls, who chose to fight Chaos whilst mortal given the chance to deliver vengeance.

They’re not brainwashed or conditioned to it. Their motivations remain (so far as we know) uninterfered with. In a very real sense, they made the same bargain with Sigmar as Chaos offers others - but actually got what they wanted.

Yes. It’s unlikely Sigmar was entirely truthful given the flaws - but they’re still driven by their own desire to oppose Chaos. It’s a very interesting dynamic.

Arseholes.....have I just talked myself into Stormcast as a third army?

I don't know about you, but I really liked that. The Empire had no supermen to go toe-to-toe with a Chaos Warrior, no friendly gods, not even especially powerful wizards, they had to stand against the horrors with cold steel, black powder, and courage. It felt way more heroic to me than the Stormcast, all the random "Cities of Sigmar" armies hiding behind the Stormcast, or the Space Marines have ever felt.

In terms of the two settings, I do agree. It’s one of the reasons I love the Imperial Guard. To quote Flash? Just a man, with a man’s courage.

I would have liked it in WHFB if the narrative reflected that state of affairs, but it didn't. Going off the fluff of what armies actually WERE, the Empire and Brettonia should have been ripped to shreds in short order. Human empires simply did not have the narrative backing to reasonably exist in the world, let alone be major powers. WHFB had a ton of great things about it, but at it's heart it was still a project started by cobbling together some random fantasy parts then making jury-rigged repairs and additions along the way. There are huge chunks that are just big holes of grey in the setting which never had a notable attempt made to explain them.

Hmm, I’ve enjoyed reading these.
To try and make a list myself is tricky. Game wise, don’t really play aside from Underworlds, so it wouldn’t be based on that (Though I sense this is more fluff and/or model based).
Though that’s the next thing.
For instance, I like the Kharadron lore wise, but not blown away by the models. Conversely I love the Idoneth models, but the lore isn’t my favourite three necessarily.
(Preface, my WHF armies were VC, Empire, Ogres & WoCNurgle).

So here we are..
No. Immediately I couldn’t do it. I’ve made two lists
In no particular order.

Lore:
Ogres:
I have always loved their background from fantasy, obviously it’s a bit of a change here, but in general I like everything about them. The more intense savage destructive version of Orcs, no nonsense!
Flesh Eater Courts: I mean, obviously their lore is fantastic. So rich in imagination and it’s just a shame it isn’t shown more in the models. I wouldn’t want a whole army of the models in the tome, I had enough with just my VC units really..
Stormcast Eternals: Again, how can they not be there. Rich in lore, as they get a lot of time devoted to them I suppose so understandable.
But the whole standing against evil for the good of the people. What’s not to like..

Models:
Maggotkin:
Very characterful, fun looking. Nurglings. Not really many/any bad models in the range.
Idoneth: As I hinted at earlier, I love the range. The fantastical nature of them all. Even the base units are nice. The incredible detail on these guys are really good!
Gloomspite: Basically encompasses everything I said about the above holds true for these. Characterful, fun, no bad models. Detail is fantastic on the ranges. They’ve got squigs. They’re cheeky yet vicious. Fun to paint. They’ve got it all. And on a side note, their lore is obviously great, they just only miss out on making the lore list too. As obviously everything about them makes a great story etc.

I like normal grunts in my sci fi settings, but I prefer my fantasy to be more fantastical. Stormcast really make the setting for me; giving a human element that's not grounded to human limitations. Peasant armies are generally a pretty significant turn off for me and a big part of why I generally don't care for Tolkien inspired fantasy even though I do quite like LotR. Overall, I like the Stormcast, but I feel like their identity is a little too hard to pin down these days and they could use a more focused playstyle that brings some of their centerpiece models to the fore. I'm not sure they make my top 3 in their current form, but they're the bedrock of my interest in the setting. Not an army I own, but one I consider regularly.

3. I'm going to cheat and give a spot to the Sylvaneth/Deepkin/Daughters/Lumineth/etc. Elves are another fantasty thing I really don't have a great fondness for, but seeing them adapt to different environments into wildly different forms is really compelling. I have Sylvaneth army that's currently shelved but I've love to see a "Cities of Pointy Ears" kind of book that united them for a bit more variety.

2. Nighthaunt: I'm not an undead guy in general. I kind of roll my eyes and appreciate some of it as good things to fight against, but rarely see any personal appeal. Nighthaunt are probably the one exception and the only time I've considered an undead army.

1. Gloomspite Gitz: I generally get into most games under the lawful/good side of things. Eventually though, I find myself wanting to pick up something that thrives on being silly and untamed. Gitz are just... their models are just so fun. I consider 40k Orks to be one of the best takes on another one of these overdone tropes I've harped on and sadly the Sigmar version is just a bunch of excellent models with almost no identity of their own. Their diminutive brethren on the other hand, are just loaded with character, particularly where Squigs get involved. The trolls are great too, but squigs are just so good.

Something I like about LotR is that when it comes to proper armies much is actual soldiers doing the fighting. They are merely human, but still a professional military. But they aren't super elite either. Just soldiers. I find that rather significant portion between 'militia' and 'spartans' is often skimmed over. Both in spite and because of that being a big chunk of the bell curve* for a fantasty setting.

*Yes I know in a historical context it is not that simple. But when you are fighting the likes of chaos, undead, orks, etc, professional soldiers by trade would be a staple.

I was referring more to the books than the game, but yes, I agree. My point is that when I want a fantasy world, I'm looking for walking goat mountains and airships powered by strands of unicorn mane or something. The tendency for western fantasy to turn into medieval Europe with different monster humans that all embody a racial stereotype isn't where I go to let my my imagination run wild. A peasant army marching against barbarian orcs is usually my first cue that the world lacks the kind of whimsy I'm after.

These threads are fun. I'll jump on the bandwagon of lightweight threadomancy:

1) Lumineth Realm Lords: I'm all in on this faction, and will likely post some pics of my army-in-progress elsewhere. I once had a massive all-metal High Elf army I foolishly sold off after AoS hit. I intend to be a full collector for this army by having literally everything. Anyway, the design is excellent--the lore is good, the combination of hellenistic and east asian aesthetics and philosophies is right up my alley. In my mind, I feel that I share many elven shortcomings: pride/arrogance, perfectionism, and emotionality; and the exercising of restraint, meditation, acceptance and endurance resonate with my own journey of self mastery.

2) Gitmob Grotz: Ok, so this isn't an army and likely never will be, but ever since I was a young High Elf player and read the tale of Grom the Paunch in the 5th ed High Elf Army Book (and later in the 4th ed Orcs and Goblins Army Book), I've been a fan of common gobboz. The Warhammer Underworlds Rippa's Snarlfangs are outstanding models, and I would happily mortgage my car to pay for such an army. Common Gobboz are, to my mind, your run of the mill nasty villains. I likely like them because they are the opposite of the elves that I love: they're ugly, impulsive, honorless, and expendable. Yet they are cunning, innovative and full of surprises.

3) Sons of Behemat: if I were to ever finish my Lumineth--which will likely have a model count of about 200 models--I'd want an army that is the diametric opposite. The new mega gargants look like a great deal of fun to model and paint. The lore is fun and thematic. I was sold when playing the army was described as "a stroll across the battlefield."

I hope so! Common Goblins and Orcs are my favourite faction in Warhammer Fantasy. I think they don't quite "fit" in the hyped up to 11 world of Age of Sigmar, and I gave my responses in this thread based on which factions I think are best in the new setting.

Now I’ve had a chance to read the Lumineth book?

I’m super chuffed that all four Elf factions (counting Sylvaneth) are selfish knobbers in their own unique ways.

They do play with others, but it’s always their agenda above all others. They are not good guys, unless you count amongst their number. It’s a mix of sheer arrogance and genuine skill.

The Lumineth in particular with their continent spanning sigils. Given what they’re up to, it is ultimately for the common good. But, sucks to be you if you or your home are in the way.

It’s a great trope to work with, and harkens back to the Fae of folklore being ultimately untrustworthy, and of uncertain at best morality.

Top three

1. Daughters of Khaine - sexy Elf killer ladies, sexy Elf/snake hybrid killer ladies, sexy elf Goddess who is playing the world by her own rules and winning - see a theme?

2. Soulblight Vampires - Stylish immortal killers led by the first vampire and master manipulator and super stylish, ultra sexy Neferata - oh and there is a bald wannabee as well but meh.

3. Overlords: Steampunk Dwarf pirate/traders with airships - yeah, hell yeah

However I do really enjoy the lore of all the others with special mentions to:

Flesh-Eater Courts : Insane undead who think they are noble heroes
Cities of Sigmar - bit more limited in the game than the lore - but they are good solid faction with loads of increasingly interesting stories and background.
Deepkin; Underwater souldraining elves - enjoyed but the book Court of the Blind King really brought them to life for me.

I am not sure they get any choice in the matter and there is def some modling and removal of "problem" aspects or memories at least acording to the books. He also took alot of the best martial spririts away from Shyish leaving them unable to fight for their lviing relatives. Probably the right decision but....

Truthfully, they fit better in Age of Sigmar than they did before. The different Realms and the way things work via Realmgates and the winds of magic being kinda/sorta back as points where the Realms 'bleed together' almost creates some interesting things.

Perhaps I should read some of that stuff. I am a bit wary, because GW fiction has in my experience been pretty variable in quality. My main way to absorb fiction for games like this would usually be the main rulebooks.

The brief rundown...

There's a breed of Arachnarok Spiders native to Shyish that utilize the webs to entrap souls as they're brought to Shyish. They're considered extremely special by the Gloomspite dwelling in Shyish and usually have a deathshead marking on their body.

Nagash, naturally, considers them a huuuuuuuge problem.

Also:
Gloomspite and Gitmobs? They're two separate factions, after a schism erupted among the Goblins over which was the actual 'power': the Bad Moon or the Evil Sun.

The Gloomspite said the Bad Moon and thus have become nocturnal/cavedwellers, following the Bad Moon as it careens through the Realms.
The Gitmobs are trying to find the Evil Sun, constantly chasing it across the Realms to try to restore it to its place in the cosmos.

The Gloomspite 'tome clearly established three major types of grots; Gloomspite, Gitmob, and Grotbag Scuttlers. Gloomspite are further subdivided into Moonclan and Spiderfang, being the night goblins and forest goblins of WHFB. Gitmob are the basic goblins leaning to a wolf/chariot theme, they have an Underworlds warband (currently marked as Gloomspite on their warscroll, but only for lack of another place to put them atm). Grotbag Scuttlers are sky pirates, who are alongside Kharadron and Skryre as one of the 'big three' sky factions.

I am thinking Gitmob will be enough to get their own, as there will be a lot of Goblin models for Old World that can do double-duty in AoS. Verses Scuttlers who are very much an AoS-exclusive type in concept.

But who knows? We only know about them at all due to second-hand mentions in various fluff sources, they could be years away or not coming at all.

My favourite are Stormcast. I have always had a fondness for paladins and noble knights. Love the beefy armoured models.

Their lore is a lovely...inverse..I guess ...of Chaos Warriors. Stormcast aren't trying to earn eternal power - they just get it thrust upon them.

Rather than willingly trading their humanity for daemonhood, these heroes are made immortal and then little by little start to lose their humanity.

Second are DoK. Always loved evil elves. Plus warrior nuns or Amazons. And my formative years of Ray Harry Hausen movies and Dungeons & Dragons.

Bonesplitters are very close behind, though. I adore the sculpt of the models. Just looking at them makes me smile with their roaring slightly cartoon yet ferocious faces. Plus they have war pigs.

The Gloomspite Gitz models are what finally got me into AoS. I looked into playing night goblins back in fantasy but never took the lead but as soon as I saw how they made the new squigs I had to get them.

I love the beastclaw raiders aspect of the ogres and their background of always having to move (and eat) or else they'll just freeze in place.

I really like how they reimagined the wood elves into the sylvanith. It really showed how much creativity the new setting opened up. I looked the old world stuff but it really felt like gw limited itself on where it could go, but AoS really let them go crazy with the design space.

My favorite factions are partly due to old world fluff and game play.

1) Vampires aka Soul Blight. Love them. Love them. Love their old world lore. Love their new world lore. Love the attrition game play.

2) Ogor Maw Tribes aka Ogre Kingdoms. Fun army to play. Fun army to create back story for. Just a fun all around.

3) Slaves to Darkness aka Warriors of Chaos. Fun, tough units and jacks of all trades but can do more when the boss is around.

I have each army from 7th through AOS2.0. So many memories. So many future memories. With Slaves, I had to REALLY change it up because it was mortal Slaanesh and monster mash which made no sense in AOS and no longer exists.
