it helps thtat Cavil was said to have been "very good with the sword work" part of the Witcher.

But can he fake a Scottish accent?

After just watching Highlander last night I am not excited for a remake.

I don't feel like it's needed o that it will add anything useful. Will the swordfights look netter? Sure, but so what.

I really wish there was a way to name the Highlander universe so that we could get peripheral movies and more characters and story. That would be get my interest.
Giving it some thought and all I can think is that Henry Cavill would have been a good choice to play Richie Ryan.
All I can hope for as far as a re make is that they do set up a highlander universe so we can get more material rather than leading to the end of the gathering and the prize.

Highlander was a clever concept but short sited and unfortunately a throw away movie at the time. I didn't enjoy the second movie but it's been forever so I may have to watch it again.

I have a few more thoughts on this but maybe later if they're worth it.

I do want to be excited about more Highlander but it's difficult.

The second one is fun just to watch Michael Ironside chew the scenery. Otherwise it’s pretty poor. The weird galactic civil war thingy kinda came out of nowhere and didnt really go anywhere.

I remember the hype about the special effects because of some show abut special effects at the time and all the cool stuff they did that the movie would use.
It's been ages so I can't correctly recall. To me that seemed like to focus of the move more than anything else.

A few interesting ideas in there I guess. Like the reset of Conner back to being an Immortal. The Third movie was strange because it seemed like it really should have been the second just based on the plot points. It felt weird. Like the game didn't know how many players it ever had. But if new immortals keep turning up, like in the series, then it's plausible that even the Immortals don't exactly know the rules aside from the ones they play by, like holy ground.
I'd say Conner could have won the prize in the first one until the universe decided to pop out another immortal. But again the prize is more or less just the collective -ness of all the immortals so I also think the prize in the first movie went too far and the series did a tad bit of a better job with quickening's and that sort of thing.
I like that it makes the Immortals unreliable narrators to a point. It works because everything eventually gets lost to the past.

What I don't want is the soundtrack to be the best part of this movie. We already know how good it is. It would be embarrassing if the movie isn't clever and memorable.

I am honestly just hoping a new release gives me a chance to convince my RPG group to play more of my Highlander the Series themed RPG.

There's a 'Renegade Version' of the film that completely removes the alien storyline. From Wikipedia:

In 1995, Mulcahy made a director's cut version known as the Renegade Version, which became the main version of the film available as the original theatrical cut did not have enough demand to warrant further production for home media. As a result, many fans in later years were only able to find the Renegade Version for viewing rather than the original theatrical release. The Renegade Version was reconstructed largely from existing material; certain scenes were removed and others added back in and entire sequences of events were changed. All references to the Immortals being aliens from another planet called Zeist were eliminated. New sequences include a battle between MacLeod and Katana atop a moving vehicle after they escape the security facility, and MacLeod and Louise climb through a mountain tunnel to emerge above the Shield to confirm that the radiation levels are back to normal (a scene previously only seen in the UK cut). The new version removes a major continuity gaffe from the theatrical version, which had merged two separate sword fights between MacLeod and Katana into one longer climactic battle. The director's cut version restores them to two separate battles, although it never shows how or when Connor reacquired his katana.

That's interesting - didn't know about that. Certainly (as far as I could tell) Highlander 3 seemed to completely ignore the very existence of Highlander 2...

The important thing to remember is that (as far as I can tell) there is no album of the Highlander soundtrack, you have to get the Queen album 'A Kind of Magic'.

I do think that was the first film to do a 'hologram computer monitor' special effect (or at least the first one I saw), which was oddly impressive at the time, but left me wondering how it would work without camera trickery.
Other than that I vaguely remember a pointless magic tornado when Sean Connery came back and/or died... and that's about it.

After seeing Highlander 2 my dorm mates and me decided H3 had better start with Comner waking up and saying "what an awful dream". Which is basically what they did for H3.

Anyway thinking about accents, I want Conner Macleod of the Clan Macleod to have a Belgian accent, Ramirez the Egypian to have a southern drawl and the Russian Kurgan to play his part in a Yorkshire accent.

I always thought that Adrian Paul did a better Scottish accent, which was much, much thicker in the flashback scenes. I also kind-of like some of the expanded lore of the series. Watchers are cool, The Four Horsemen were neat, but I'm unsure about Dark Quickenings.

I agree. There's a lot of material available now. I hope they use it to set up something larger than the original Highlander did. I just hope they don't try to stuff it all into one film.

Adrian Paul started a little rough in the series but his character developed and the acting did as well. You can see when he is having a good time. It's amusing when he comes off as a kid with his hand cough in the preverbal cookie jar. Or when he hassles someone who he suspects is following him. Trying to talk to them in different languages and being a bit of a clown about it.

What I don't want is a dull wooden lead character. I'm sure Henry Cavill could do a good job I just think he's too big but I don't even know if that's right. I guess the question is would the Highlander be an every man or is being into working out and bigger just being part of the times. Which it probably is. The difference being physically fit vs swoll.
Maybe I'm over thinkin it now but that was part of my objection to the casting in the beginning. The more I think about it the less of an issue it really is. I think Arnold at his peak in the 80's would have been a horrible choice for example.

Which reminds me of a thing. So Richie Ryan was young when he "became" Immortal. the problem with that was obviously he would age/ age out. Which got me thinking he could explain it away for a little while ,maybe, as steroids' and working out. But again that doesn't give him all that much more time on the show had it kept running.
Or anyone else really...

Will probably watch it in 2026, but so far its all been at least enjoyable with the 1986 film and the 2008 anime being the best ones.

If time is a factor just watch the original. Everything after, even the ok stuff, was never as good by a country kilometer.

I have to disagree there. When they were digging into the mythos and not just the 'Immortal of the Week' stories, Highlander: The Series was just as good if not better than the original film.

It’s just one of those I’ve seen in dribs and drabs, but never had on video or DVD.

Wonder if my local CEX might have copies? Feels like something they would have.

Yup. For £1.50. Headed down that way today as it happens. Getting the bits to make a Jambalaya, so looks like sort-of-Cajun food tonight and Highlander on my telly.

Erm….I forgot to buy them! Got distracted by Christmas Ornament Tat, and buying ingredients for a Jambalaya.

Then I made the Jambalaya, scoffed it, and entered a food coma.

But, recovered now, and need my Sunday walk. So back to CEX it is, I guess!

Right, procured. Also because I was left inexplicably and inadvisably unsupervised, with money, picked up some Christmas ornaments to spell out a low tier sweary.

Adrian Paul filmed an opinion video on the reboot. He generally likes the idea, even if he's in it. He thinks live action is better, even if animation can take you further with storylines. He says either a new McLeod or a different character in the mythos has equal credibility to him.

I would gladly be on board wit h a new and different MacLoad or a completely new character with their own family name.
