Subject: Graven's Bloggit: Hondo Ohnaka and Weequay pirates (Shatterpoint), more ork nonsense
Olthannon wrote:Quietly amazed at the knowledge that a beer mat isn't a universal phrase!
Space pirates are very cool minis, great work painting them up.
Looking forward to you painting up those lovely metal orkses.
Who knew? Clearly, coaster is a broader term abroad Thanks mate, and yeah, the other RTB2s should be jolly.
Gitsplitta wrote:Glad to see them all clean and shiny.
I might be able to help you with that last one...
Well... relatively clean, anyway. These ones have not stripped quite as well as the last lot. Currently got the classic eldar in the chemicals.
However, in the mean time, done some more modern orks
A load of bullorks. I decided to mod a couple of these guys up as they often start with random injuries. So we have a sombrerork... And a boy with a mighty choppa. Plus a regular boy, albeit a big one. Why on earth am I voluntarily doing checks?! I also decided to have a much more varied colour scheme for these guys and I'm glad I did.
Plus, I made a grot with a grabba ! A gnoblar, with the stick carved down and a claw attached.
On another note entirely, some old resin terrain (again, via Gitsplitta). Now, i have to spoiler this as me old chum metropolis games checks out my blog from time to time, and these are for his birthday in a couple of weeks... so, bugger off!
Spoiler:
When I saw this terrain its 70s retro sci-fi vibe immediately screamed Space 1999 to me. Moonbase alpha, in all its black and beige glory. I'm particularly happy with the purple planet screen.
Yup, that was fun.
Next up? Well ridiculous ork/grot scrap tanks but I'm not sure I'm in a vehicle painting place right now. Maybe more oldhammer orks.

Those pics don't do your paintwork on the terrain justice my friend. They look fantastic! BTW, I think it's some kind of ceramic... not resin.
I think Kromlech did sombrero heads for orks. I know I have an ork biker with one for sure.
While "beer mat" is a perfectly good term... it's just something I've never heard here in the 'states. Come to think of it, coaster is about the only word I recall hearing for that particular item, at least in the parts of the US that I'm familiar with.

Appreciate the kind words amigo! That is indeed a Kromlech ork head. Wish I had more. They also do the official range for Space Gits.
And, I think you need a couple of beer mats...
In the meantime, a totally different project: the Scrap Tank!
A very dodgily built spartan that my child did long ago gets a new lease of life!
Wheels from a 6" scale dune buggy rescued from the attic.
I wanted it to feel a bit military but still as it had been salvaged from the smurfs
Zoom zoom!
The ogre bits continue to have great value
And a little tribute
Great fun. Next up - i have a really retro challenge for myself that is going to hurt my eyes.

Please do! And I highly recommend Space Gits for inspiring daft ideas.
JoshInJapan wrote:That scrap tank is awesome! The oversized wheels really add a lot to the model.
I think I know what your retro challenge is, and I look forward to your take on it/them.
I was thinking about the og battle wagon wheels which were truly ridiculous.
Talking of silly tanks, made a sort of matching wee grot tank
Base of a kid's tonka digger and bits from the box.
May's contest theme is Hunters and Hunted, and JoshInJapan is indeed an inspiration
Yup, oldhammer Jes Goodwin Harlequins ... along with a bit of restored tech from the vaults:
So a partial deldar raider that's going to become a Harley party bus. I had intended to turn it into a pirate goblin tank; instead I'm going to try to mount them on the raider; being old flat metals you can fit on a surprisingly number of them. I've sculpted up the face, but if I am unhappy with it, I have an stl to try also. And as for the colour scheme... it's going to be very me
Other plans for May include the remaining 4 OG Space Ork Raiders plus a very early 90s metal one to be a counts-as Breacher Boy, and there is alot of other metals getting stripped also. Non GW, there's Delta Squad for Shatterpoint, which I gave in and bought as a treat to myself; I've been signed off work for a few weeks; finally just taking a bit of time to myself to reset, because clearly just muddling along is not working. I have had a couple of positive moments and thoughts so far, and hope to build on them.

I collect beer mats from our local breweries. Perhaps we should do a cultural exchange of beer mats?
OH, I think you're being hard on yourself over the harlequin prow. I think you did a damn good job.
They were great fun! I'll need to figure out what makes a viable ork force these days next I have my eye on the new ork battalion . Oh and yes to anything involving beer
Briancj wrote:Yeah, that prow is pretty sweet. Going to look great hauling around the party troupe!
Thanks dude, and lovely to see you back in the land of dakka!
In the main, I have been working on the mammoth project that is my monthly contest entry.
The Hunters...
Not forgetting the Hunted
The smiling god must have his bat, after all...
Next up is a mystery, frankly. Maybe more ork silliness, maybe some Shatterpoint for the fun of it. There's a lot of ork vehicles coming down the line, having tracked down a copy of the Speed Freeks rules etc. Think I've figured out what was up with my 3D printer so there may also be assorted Carnevale. Who can say?

Great work on the skimmer-- I like how you leaned into the Joker colors-- and the grimy "teeth" really draw the eye. I want to see more photos of the individual Harlequins, though.

Ask and ye shall receive...
Joker
Birds of Prey inspired Harlequin
Classic Harley Quinn scheme
New 52 inspired
And a different Emancipation of Harley Quinn inspired Harlequin
Might change about which pics I use for contest.
Thanks for looking and feedback!
Primed up Orks, Clones and venetian monsters today, so plenty to come...

Next up: Delta Squad, Form Up!
The heroes of the classic Republic Commando video game.
These were tough, as none of the markings are sculpted on.
Boss. I went with a slightly different process for the Phase 2 clones generally, priming black with zenithal ivory.
Fixer. The bases, incidentally, are Battle of Kasshyyyk themed.
Scorch. I really hope we get a version of him from the Bad Batch TV show to go with Crosshairs, Firebrand and the other imperial clones. Honestly, what a ridiculous paint scheme Sev. Another daft scheme to freehand.
They were great fun to do though.
With that, I have painted everything currently available for Shatterpoint, which is mental... at least until the next wave
Quick RL update
Spoiler:
So, I've been signed off work for a month with stress and burnout; I'm about halfway through it, and it's helping, though it's a bit weird to adjust to - and is likely to be a bit weird going back :/ but I'm going ok.
ANYWAY!
What else is on the table? Well, I have been trying and failing to resurrect my 3D printer, I thought the FEP was wrecked though replacing that hadn't helped, so if isn't that, it's the screen, in which case the whole thing is a gonner. Before it died, I managed to print a couple more Gifted for Carnevale, Burratino (murderous Pinnocchio) and the Aberration (big tentacled gribbly).
Next batch of 5 Oldhammer orks are coming along:
I'm nearly there with some ork bikes, too, plus have begun repurposing some walking dead barricades as Space Gits scatter / Speed Freeks barriers.
Still need more orkifying.
On we go! At this rate I'm going to have an actual Waagh on my hands...

Gitsplitta wrote:Great work on the eldar boat graven! The color, the feel... just perfect!
Thanks brother. I appreciate it.
Now, in fairness, y'all, I warned you there would be orks.
Da Lawmastaz! Yes, I got distracted by bikes. Tut tut.
Rozza, Bizzi and Po-po the grot
A bit of context: I picked up a copy of Speed Freeks, minus most of the models and boards.
Da Polis!
3 bikes were included, primed gunmetal and orks painted white with some blobby colours
Da Pig!
And Da Fuzz with Old Bill the grot
What can I say, I'm a sucker for a rescue job
I have no idea what an ork detachment looks like these days or if a mechanised army is a thing in 11th... not that I'll ever play but I have these, the big rig thing, 3 grot tanks, plus an unbuilt snazzwagon just primed and the new battalion coming end of June for my birthday as well. And, of course, all those oldhammer orks.
The last gasp of the current 3d printer is a couple more Carnevale models
The Aberration, an escaped experiment from the asylum
And everyone's favourite murder puppet, Burratino
I've got no strings...
Got one more idea to fix the printer. If not, it's a gonner. It is 5 years old I suppose.
In the meantime, the oldhammer orks are ongoing, so may be done next. I've decided I'm happy with my existing barricades and to not orkify them, so they stay generically useful. I did have a rummage in the bits box so have stuff to make others with a bigger footprint if that proves necessary.
It's been good getting a bunch of paint on. I go through phases but it's certainly therapeutic.
Cheers gang, keep looking, I'll keep painting

Some great work in here since last time I checked. I especially love the scrap tank, and it's always good to see oldhammer orks getting some love.
I work in the pub trade and that's how I know a useless random fact: a beer mat collector is called a tegestologist. I also have access to beer mats if anyone needs any

Thanks old friend! Blue ones go faster, or something...

Thanks mate. That's a useful pub quiz lore! Glad you're enjoying the oldhammer stuff, there will certainly be more.
Continuing with Da Law...
Da Black Maria!
Just like the bikes, vehicle crews are all slang for police.
So, Bobby, Peeler and Cop the Grot.
Oh and of course Mad M... I mean Livid Larry
And don't think I've forgotten the oldhammer ones!
10 oldhammer orks left. That's next ... unless it's not
