I liked the pistols the 3rd Ed Banshees had.

But yeah, there was a real sense of "What the feth are you animals doing???" whenever Jes gets back into designing something. Happened with Eldar and with 'Nids. The dude comes in to fix everything.

The 3rd edition metal Tyranids were really awful. While one could argue about the design (though the Tyrant guard and the Lictor were just outright horrible), the quality of the models was abysmal.

Apparently not. Think it’s because dying is good for them. So why wear one. Really it just differentiates them from craftworlders.

That Carnifex was a great model. This Queen was great too https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/File:Tyranid_Hive_Tyrant_2nd_Edition_1.jpg , as was the Screamer Carnifex. Even the Ridley Scott Queen wasn't awful for the time, despite the derivative nature.

Not when you compare it to the original it wasn’t.

Sure, the original HT was surprisingly dinky. But man. It did not get a glow up as the kids like to say.

To be fair, Dark Reapers were probably the best of that bunch.

I do mostly like those Dark Reapers, but the heads look like they were made as an afterthought. I think most of those aspect warriors have at least some redeeming features, with the exception of the godawful scorpions, and I'd even go as far to say the banshees were actually good.

Lorewise, its because they don't need to use war masks anymore. As many lore purists point out, war masks tends to be more a metaphorical thing, though donning the helmet is the first step to using it. Whatever book that had the ynnari in it ended with a lot of aspect warriors removing helmets. Nothing is stopping you from having helmeted ynarri though

If I recall correctly the Banshees had elaborate sword arm armour, which made them look great. However those Scorpions had what looked to be buck teeth, and a helmet that was over sized and in real danger of snapping their necks when fighting... or walking g through a bit of woodland.

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

And the 3rd Ed Scorps were badly balanced, which made some of them topple over very easily. And one of the poses was just "I'm grabbing my ankle for some reason!".

I loathed those sculpts. Random twerking ankle grabbing disco poses for no reason. The only one of that lot that actually could be considered 'good enough' to be carried forward was the Exarch. But the normal Scorpions were just posed horrendously. Like they were doing the limbo or something.

The metal 3rd ed. Alien Queen Tyrant was horrible. It just...diverged way too far from the aesthetic, even compared to the Rhinofex and the horrible Tyrant Guard of that era.

The Forge World Tyrants did so much heavy lifting for that design it was unreal. They were fine. They actually worked especially if you were prepared to Fluff out that they were a different subspecies of Tyrant and actually meshed with the rest of the range. But the original metal version? Ew. No.

Taste differs. But apart from the design, parts of the 3rd edition models (in this case especially the shoulder and back armour) looked like they were sculpted with bare fingers and not with modelling tools. Several 'details' around the range were just blobs that looked like pimples or, if larger, like crude barnacles. I had my 2nd edition Tyranids and bought some of the new models and was genuinely shocked.

OK, back at home and can now see them on a larger screen.
I'm sorry, but these are hideous, a real miss.
The helmets are terrible, but i also hate that tabard pattern, what the heck is it, just lines? At least make them bones, or something. They are so simplistic and so boring, the first Eldar models that I'm not impressed with at all.

Being plastic, they will at least be salvageable. head swap, and maybe a better paint scheme, but damn.

I'm a little concerned that the warp spider rumor was born out of the warp spider equipped autarch, since we haven't seen anything else of them. Meanwhile, it'd be weird to have Maugan Ra but no Dark Reapers.

I'm concerned that only Maugan Ra is the only Lord getting an update when they all look comically squatty and outdated, and it was just 5 models to update, and we didn't "need" rangers on bike.

Ofc we wanted all 5 phoenix lords done but honestly GW isn't going to make 5 one and done purchases when they could make a 'ALL NEW AND SHINIEY JET BIKE THAT WILL BE STUPID OP' so we can make all the sales from the Eldar players who have been waiting updates to the Eldar line for decades. The PL's can be released anytime there is a gap in the release schedule and people will eat them up no problem. But like most HQ's they are one and done purchases for most people. It makes more sense to sell the new op hotness that people might/will want multiples of.

Some backwater sump

I think they look goofy.

The heads look really cartoony, with none of the grit and menace of the 2nd ed. sculpts, even with the helmet vanes. The imprints of the teeth look soft and mushy. More halloween mask than something evoking death.

The poses and the way they hold the guns make them look weightless, not the death-dealing heavy weapons they are. Yes, sure, they could have suspensors or augmented arm strength or something, but there's no mass to them. They look like they're waving around pool noodles.

The hooded head for the exarch looks like a necron cosplaying as a solitaire.

From the knees down, they're good, but that's it.

Never collected Eldar but these reapers look great. Helmets seem to be a bit love’em or hate’em in here but i think the softness of the features is what sells me on them. They give an “ornamental” look for lack of a better word. Like ancient masks.

Might have to snag a box just to paint

Apologies for the terrible editing skills but I think this helps a lot. Removing the mouth makes them look less cartoony and shortening the sides of the helmet makes the whole model look less top heavy and makes sure the legs don't look too spindly.
I don't have great modelling skills either, but this is something I should be able to achieve.

There're ghetto-designs like this to print everywhere these days. By that logic, GW doesn't have to do miniatures at all anymore.

These are pretty uninspired though, even by the dollar-shop-standards of cults3D, etc.. ,

Ah, of course.

I suppose, knowing that they're redoing Maugan Ra, who -checks notes- is the Phoenix Lord of the Dark Reapers Aspect... they should logically also redo the....say, Warp Spiders or other aspect of your choice to go with him?

Because that totally makes sense, right?

Alternatively, they could've picked the two Aspects with old v1.0 sculpts and prioritised them, while added new Phoenix Lords to the range at the same time - and the latter are closer to guaranteed new sales than resculpts are.

Now, thanks to Potato-cam we appear to have one of those two Aspects getting a resculpt, though the rumours in here indicate GW have dropped the ball by not giving them a PL...

It would have been too logical to give the Shining Spears their Phoenix Lord at the same time as their update, even though the background for the Phoenix Lord and his wargear exists already from snippets in the Iyanden supplement and past edition Craftworld Codices:

Drastanta, Tempest of Starlight, wielding the Celestial Lance and wearing the azure helmet Crown of the 7th Sky.

I can only assume its less about what particular PLs and their aspects needed redoing and more about what the play style of the army will be.

And anyway I assume the kits will be redone further down the line. Are they necessary?

PS @chikout this looks great. Will definitely do that.
