It could be an upgrade sprue for the megas like the 40k Knights got. It's painted differently than the original one.

Who would make an Upgrade Sprue with a 1:1 copy of a bit from an existing kit?

It could be a designer has ripped it off totally and is using it on another kit (rather than taking the 3D art asset out of the library and slightly tweeking it first as we've seen with a whole bunch of stuff recently, sometimes with mirroring being the only thing done)

Could it be part of a reboxing/bundle/vs. box? So while the sprue is old, it’s going to come out in a new format?

I think the upgrade sprue will be all new but the model will contain some of the old parts. I would imagine an upgrade would include new heads and weapons but the body won't change much. They could have decided to use the old part on purpose as a deliberate tease of a new mega variant.

Or perhaps they use a dead mega gargant as part of a diorama base for Leman Russ

The only thing I can think of is that whatever it is providing the upper left corner "jag" bit over top of the shield is new (and not actually part of the Khinerai Shield like I'm thinking it is) and the person photographing the bits for Rumor Engine didn't know that the focus of the RE shot should be that.

Would be weird for gw to hint new box with additional sprue as rumour engine.

If they are chaps to prevent contact with a bike engine, or fiction with a mount, I could see the lack of the knee. Might help bending? Looks silly, but that’s what we got.

Seems a little rough for elves. Guessing ash wastes.
