I do love myself a pistol with uncontrollable recoil that's also awfully front-heavy.

They think that adding "shotgun" to a bolt weapon would somehow make it a different gun, so yeah, chances are they think "mass driver" is something that changes an object's mass.

Duh, it's called a mass driver, it obviously drives mass. Just like how a shot gun is a gun that shoots or a Space Marine is a Marine in Space
