All I can say is I'm thankful I don't know anyone who is a Cathay fan in the UK who would be able to tempt me to swap armies and to thus tempt me into starting chaos.

I like the nods to the old hunchbacks. I didn't like how hunched the pre-6th ones were were, but I did like the armour aesthetics in general.

I can't justify the core box as I already have the Cathay half and am not totally sure I like the chaos warriors more than the old ones, but I'm definitely in for the battle march book!

I have miniatures from every starter set released for WFB. And I bought at least one of every starter from 5th to 8th edition...

But I might give this set a miss. I have enough Chaos, and I don't want Cathay at all.

Seems that everybody wants to split the box for the Chaos half. Keep an eye on ebay for some cheap Cathay after this launches I think.

I do love these spindly conifer/spruce trees they've got for their displays. I'm wondering if they are some kind of train/historical kit and if they've been edited in some way as I can't seem to find them.

They might be in-house 3D prints. GW uses a lot of bespoke scenery in their promo shots that never sees any release: the Norscan ship, the Norscan tents (on the WoC Battle March box), Ossiarch Bonereapers' fortress,... I doubt they would use any scenery that is noticeably made by another company.

Perhaps yeah. I thought the trees would be too complex to 3D print. I can definitely see the longships and huts being 3D printed.

They could also be custom made in house the old fashioned way.
Spoiler:

It's one of the things Warhammer TV would be good for, a behind the scenes making these boards but they'll never do that.

Yeah I have enough Chaos stuff as is and the majority of it, while built, is still not painted. I also don't really want any Cathay so the starter set is a pass for me.

Will be picking up the new rulebook right out the gate as well as the cards as I don't want to miss out on them like I did last time.

Seeing the trees in more detail, they're probably flocked armatures. Possible bent metal wires dipped in flock? The central trunk seems to be a spiralling wire. I've never made trees myself though, so I'm not sure.
It's indeed a pity that they don't really promote DIY terrain anymore, even for stuff like hills or trees.

They do in White Dwarf? Not the old step by step, no. But the articles are still there.

What White Dwarf did they cover this in? I might see if I can locate a back issue.

Yeah if discounters offer a decent percentage off(I've noticed a depressing number of them going as low as 10% on the bigger value boxes in recent times) I'll struggle to resist that.

Darksphere are usually quite good for discounts, that's where I'll be getting mine. What I like about them is that you know if something is in stock as well. There was an old GW stockist that had a terrible habit of not having stuff in and then expect you to wait weeks for them to order it in. Showing as "available" instead of "in stock."

Yeah there's a few cool methods like using wooden dowels or twisting wire that I might need to give a bash. GW are such a massive company that they could totally sell their own supplies but it's not the direction they want to go in. Would definitely buy an updated design team terrain book for the Old World.

Dunno about that board/terrain specifically, but terrain articles akin to what you’d like to see are in WD

Well, if the thread is any indication, there won't be any Chaos halves floating around, cheap or otherwise. Leviathan spoiled me with penny a pound Screamer Killers.

Tangentially, I wonder how well Cathay sold as a line.

Curious as well. Some of the stuff goes temp out of stock on GW webstore (Jade warriors and Great Bastion book are Temp Out on the US store) but when I check the third party place I get stuff from and they are a mixed back of some stuff out of stock. Compared to the other Old World stuff they sell? Seems to be doing a bit better. Might be the case that those massive boxes they sold have really sorted people for Cathay and they don't really need any more.

I was going to pick up a sentinel to make a corrupted one as a proxy for something but it's so big it can't really be proxied in any way.

Is that with a discount or is that the GW retail price?

I don't think I've bought a White Dwarf in at least ten years, last was probably before they started releasing Warhammer Visions.
Good to know that they still do articles like that, I assumed that the more DIY aspects of the hobby weren't represented much anymore.

I wish they weren't using that old plastic chaos sorcerer in the chaos battle march box. It doesn't fit in with the new stuff all that well, and it wasn't even really a good sculpt even back when it came out.

It's the only other plastic character Chaos Warriors have that isn't already the same type as one in the Starter Box or tied to a monster mount sprue.

Also, the old plastic sorcerer is serviceable if you give him a helmet instead of the goofy devil head. The body reminds me of some of the older metal sorcerers, especially the Slaanesh and Tzeentch ones.

Hell, maybe I should grab one before he's gone. I have plenty of spare heads to work with.

One thing I find interesting about this picture is why there are Beastmen are in the frame.

Arcane Journal: The March of Chaos
Along with background, lore, and artwork, the Arcane Journal includes a new Army of Infamy where you can combine the Warriors of Chaos with the Beastman Brayherds, and rules for your Wizards to manipulate the Winds of Magic in new ways. You can also create your own custom Champions of Chaos and Brayherd Chieftains to lead your forces.

The next Arcane Journal will have a horde list of WoC and Beastmen so that's probably why they are in these shots.

Spoiler:

No Chaos Dragon in the battle report and it's a scenario from the Breaching of the Great Bastion AJ.

Looked back at an older WC article from last year and saw this. I don't think the new chaos dragon can be built without a rider but I wonder if it is at all possible.
