Subject: Dakka Painting Challenge Round 102 August 2023: Some Like it Hot!
Welcome all to the 102nd round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
This month the topic is "Some Like it Hot!": Burning things! Spicy things! Sexy things! Or just summer heatwaves. So many different types of hot, depending how literal, metaphorical, or symbolic you want to get. Or combine them all into a burning pin-up pepper. Just bring the heat!
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of August and will end at midnight EST on August 31st. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

I made this Space Wolf spae marine earlier this summer and haven't painted it yet. I think charging forward with a flamer work well for "bring the heat"
The honorable Arnipal Jarr is not an obscenely wealthy man. He does not own a nice mansion overlooking a tropical ocean. The nice mansion overlooking a tropical ocean that he does not own has no harem overflowing with exotic slave girls either. And he is most assuredly not a crime lord.
In fact I'm not quite sure how such an unassuming man could possibly fit this month's theme. It's most curious that I'm entering him regardless.

Nice! Pious is easily one of my favorite minis of all time.
For me, these competition themes always get a song stuck in my head.
"Some like it hot, but you don't know how hot till you try,
some like it hot so let's turn up the heat till we fry..."
I like to think that I'm fairly immune to advertising, but the trailer for the Octarius Kill Team set was one of the few times when I saw something and was immediately like, oh yeah, I'm buying that, like, right now. When this guy came on screen, he pretty much sealed the deal.
So now that I have the rest of the squad painted up for games, it's time to revisit my original kommando inspiration. Proof:
Just seeing him assembled and primed has got me all kinds of fired up!

No lie detected. I’m going to have that running through my head all month.
Some like it hot and some sweat when the heat is on
Some feel the heat and decide that they can't go on
Some like it hot, but you can't tell how hot 'til you try
Some like it hot, so let's turn up the heat 'til we fry
If you're wondering how I did with the challenge of pinning the tail on, I developed an ingenious two-step process: one, superglue, two, try not to drop it.
I was wondering what I could do with these guys, and then the right topic comes along. The members of Rhino Squad absolutely adore the hot zones they habitually get deployed to. This time around they are up against a rogue AI hottie.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!
I've changed my mind. Rather than the Fire Dragons, I'll be painting these Burning Men for Frostgrave:
Burning Men appear in the Red King supplement, and have a chance to spontaneously burst into flame. I'll be using FG barbarians with GSW flaming skulls, plus maybe some GS flames here and there if I get ambitious.

Now that I'm online I also want to say I am very impressed with your sculpting abillity, I've fooled around with greenstuff for long enough now to acknowledge that as I cannot imagine nailing this level of detail.
Pure eyecandy.

I've recently gotten back into painting and collecting after quite a few years out. I struggled in the past with completing things often leaving models partially painted and squads incomplete.
I'm determined to do better this time and a couple of posters in the showcase forum have said that participating in this competition would be a good way to keep motivated.
My entry for this month will be a Seraphim with hand-flamers; pics below for proof
(I assume decorative bases are allowed?)
1500pts

Welcome to the fun! Decorative bases are allowed and encouraged, but not required.
I'm entering this Courtesan and Harem Girl from Wargods of Aegyptus. Put some yellow on them many years ago already, but I'll start them over for this.
Must be really hot outside, if they're walking around like that...

This is appropriate for August, as it is not only hot- but I am Chrispy, and it's my Birthday month!
Anyhoo, I've got an old scho.... "Current Model" of Fuegan the mighty Space Elf skorcha I've got an idea for. Now I'll just have to light a fire under me bum and get all the other work done! I did get a new mini compressor for the airbrush, so that should help with the work.
I'll enter with a trio of Adepta Sororitas Paragon Warsuits:
They can carry either Multi-meltas or Heavy Flamers, and thus fit the Some Like It Hot theme for this month. I've honestly been itching for an excuse to paint these; they are the only unit that can go with Morvenn Vahl in 10th edition, and she needs a retinue, so I'll need to paint these if I want to run her (not that I'm likely to run Sisters right now, as they're pretty bad currently). In addition, I'll be painting these with Army Painter Speed Paints 2.0, so it'll be interesting to give those a test drive, particularly the metallics.
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 21 | Current main painting project: Warhammer 40k Leviathan set

The Grotsnik Corp Bump Feelerer 9,000. It only looks like several bricks crudely gaffer taped to a cricket bat.

I'm a bit tired after doing 2 big units in a row so I'll just keep it to a single ork, please don't be too mad about this bozzes..
I even selected a (stormboy) head that has shades and will make this geezy as summery as possible, hopefully properly sculpting a summer hat or something from greenstuff too. (gun isn't glued on yet to get to those hard parts) my proof pic:

Thank you.
It's not so bad on the detail front. He's slightly shorter than a human, but three times as wide. Plenty of canvas there.
