Today marks the one year anniversary of me being into the warhammer hobby. While I have only been here for a few months at best, I would like to use this platform as a way to thank the community for being so welcoming and cool to a newb like me.

how long have you been in the hobby? What was your starter army? What got you into the 40k universe?
for me 1 year, AdMech, and Bricky's 40k video.

I joined the tabletop hobby 2015, but by accident. I thought I had bought a cool board game, but instead I bought the Dropzone commander starter box.
Because of university, I had little time (and money!) to really engage with the hobby. This changed 2017, when I bought the 7th and 8th edition starter.
Biggest mistake for my wallet but I had a lot of fun building, painting and playing the game, as well as getting to know fellow hobbyists.

My first adventure into the 40k universe was much earlier. I had no clue what 40k was about, but the novel Baneblade really captured my interest. I read quite a few 40k novels in school without ever realizing that it was just a small part of a much greater hobby ...

I played two or three games of Rogue Trader back in '89. I had a tactical squad of Marines and my buddy had a box of Orks. My marines were the Order of the Phoenix- the idea was that they were originally all from different chapters, but each had died in battle... Only to be reborn as the Order of the Phoenix... So they kept their original colours except for their left arms. My buddy's Orks were outfitted with pompadour hair squigs and painted to look they were wearing rhinestone jumpsuits... Riffin on Elvis.

Then Space Hulk dropped, and I went deep down that rabbit hole. I bought every Genestealer Cult model I could find. When second ed dropped, that was my peak. I ran youth programs and bought a bunch of minis so that kids could play. We also played classic Necromunda. I played pretty hard in third too. By then, GSC were out officially, even though Tim Huckleberry tried to keep it going with his Citadel Journal dex, so I switched to Sisters.

We only played a few games of 4th, but then we went hard on 5th. When 6th dropped, they shafted Sisters with a White Dwarf dex... and after having been through it once when they sunsetted GSC, that was it for me. I sat out 6th and 7th... Well, sort of.

The 7th ed GSC dex dropped in December, and being a GSC fan, I bought it on sight. The announcement that 8th was on the way came before I had a chance to buy the 7th BRB, so I decided to wait. The refresh of Sisters was announced as part of 8th as well. That was magic to me- my two favourite factions, both of whom had been treated terribly by GW were finally going to get the attention they deserved.

I bought in harder and faster than at any other point in my time as 40k player... But at the same time, many of the people I had played with had drifted apart. So more buying and collecting than every, but not as much playing as I would have liked.I doubled down on 9th, because Crusade was everything I ever wanted from a game, and 25PL armies gave me the opportunity to collect many additional small armies so that I could supply friends with models when we were bored.

I'm skeptical of 10th, and taking a more measured approach on the purchasing front. I intend to do some 10th ed Crusading, but I do prefer 9th edition rules so far, and I like that the 9th Edition is in a finished state. Waiting for all the bespoke faction-based Crusade content again is going to suck, and GW is only going to give me 4 months from the time the last dex of 10th drops and the 11th ed begins. It sucks to only have access to all the tools I need for four months before the whole cycle begins again.

Right now I'm focusing on getting enough painting done to facilitate the campaigning to come.

well good on you for actually painting your models and taking time to do it! Yeah the codex releases suck, but I'm personally enjoying 10th edition a lot more than 9th. The Order of the Phoenix sound really cool. Are they a custom chapter?

Yeah- I used them in Space Hulk too. I painted all the tacticals according to that background, but once we discovered Space Hulk, I wanted terminators, and I found out easier to paint them in pure phoenix colours.

By the end of 2nd, I started to find that the early appeal of the Marines faded a bit for me. They began to feel so ordinary... Like just the archetypal super-soldier... As opposed to alien infected humans or nuns with guns who could do battlefield miracles.

These days, I find Deathwatch and Greyknights interesting due to their roles as Chambers Militant for the Ordos Xenos and Malleus respectively, but that's pretty much as far as my interest in Marines goes.

This also illustrates some of the things I preferred about 9th: there was a difference between Ordo Xenos and Ordo Malleus in 9th.

My hobby is gaming. With a very strong focus on miniatures games - of all sorts, scales, & genres. GWs games are but a sub-catagory of that.
Anyhow....

How long?:
34 years with GW etc.
39 (maybe 38?) if you want to count from when I started playing Battletech.
43 years from picking up my first D&D book.

I started out Christmas 1980 playing Dungeons & Dragons.
This led me to discovering Battletech in the shop where we got our D&D books some years later. I think that was in '85. It might have been '84. BTech was originally titled BattleDroids. It was quickly re-released as Battletech. I discovered this "2e" edition of it whatever month/year it hit the shelf.
Was that sometime in '84 or was it '85.... I forget. So 38/39 years of minis gaming.

Summer of '89 my group & I found a different hobby shop - and discovered Warhammer Fantasy Battle (3rd edition)
And 40k:RT.
And I got a fair dose of 40k once I started picking up White Dwarf.
40k RT was ok. But it was the fantasy stuff that most appealed to me & my group at the time. Though I did sit in on some games & ran a few borrowed units.

What finally brought me into 40k....":
Pettiness, spite, annoyance....
AKA the need to put my friend Dan in his place.

Spoiler:
See, the shop was going to host a 40k tournament - it was MONTHS & MONTHS away though. And all we heard week in & week out from Dan was how he was going to wreck everyone, blah blah blah. It got old fast & didn't stop until tourney day. Made playing games with the guy hard.
I warned him to stop. To not make me join 40k & kick his ass.
Of course he didn't stop.
So I picked up the rules and began my research.
While I was doing that the Space Wolves debuted in the pages of WD. Hmm, sooo OP.....
I promptly built a SW Terminator army with as many assault Cannons & cyclone missle launches as pts allowed and had everything painted up for that tourney. Getting the exact models was a bit of effort. All with no one knowing I was joining 40k.

Come tourney time I bribed the shop owner to pair Dan & I up in the 1st round. $ well spent BTW.
The look on Dan's face as he saw me across the table was priceless - because he already knew he couldn't beat me. And
then[i] he saw what I was playing....
I tabled him while suffering no losses.

To his dying day :( he maintained that he'd never since been beaten so soundly.

My 1st 40k army:
Space Wolves in the closing days of Rogue Trader.

Since then I've expanded my 40k forces greatly.

My first GW product ever was Tyranid Attack, so my first armies were Marines and Tyranids.
I would say that the Tyranid and Marine models. I had a friend who had a few spares from his dad, and it included a plastic Genestealer, and I thought that model was amazing. I went with Tyranid Attack over Space Hulk just due to variety and that it had two "forces" in the box.

I started wargaming with 40k in late 2023. I played dawn of war with my only friend at the time and he then saw it was based on a mini game and made a proposal we give it a try.

I bought a second hand Imperial guard army off of Leboncoin. 200 euros. Got a leman Russ, a valkyrie, a sentinel, and around 30 guard plus 15 or so heavy weapons and stuff. Also got a champion of the emperor in metal, a gakload of bitz, three lovely Warhammer codices (empire, orcs and Gobelins, chaos) and a 3.5rd Imperial guard codex. Oh and paints, maybe glue as well.

I played my first ever game in 6th, with that 3.5 codex, on my undersized living room naked table, and got my arse handed over to me but had a blast! Those kasrkins leading. The counter attack to try (and fail) to take out his master of the forge is still vivid in my memories!

In 2016, I purchased a Bolt Action starter set (the old one, not Normandy yet) for my brother and I. Having a taste of the variety "wargaming" could mean definitely anchored this hobby in me.

Anyway, in summary, been wargaming for 10 years now, starting with an Imperial Guard army, after a friend started knowing more about 40k through DoW.

actually before I even found the video I saw the Mechanicus video game and thought it looked cool. I had no interest in starting 40k but the idea of Admech were kind of cool, the JW cult borg aesthetic I found really intriguing. My first ever box was a set of skitarii and looking back they looked like gak. I didn't even bother cleaning up any mistakes.

I got started with Hero Quest and Space Crusade, as I imagine did a lot of folks of a similar age to me. That was about 1989 so I would have been 11ish?

A few years later my school group started playing Warhammer Fantasy. I started with Dwarfs and then moved onto Chaos, but didn't get very far with my Khorne army before our enthusiasm petered out.

I didn't come to 40K until much later, with the launch of 6th edition. A mate and I split the starter box, and I took the chaos half. I've since built up a reasonable collection of Khorne based CSMs, but had the rug slightly pulled from under my feet when the WE codex invalidated around 2/3 of my army.

I also started collecting Drukhari around the end of 7th edition, but haven't played them much. They again seem to have lost stuff with each new codex, and I'm wondering if I just sack everything off and start afresh...

Another Hero Quest kid here, so that would be….34 years now.

I’ve worked as shop staff over three stints, have spent an ungodly amount over the decades, still love the lore, but it’s been a long time since I was actively gaming (commute did for that).

First proper army would be Dark Angels, but had loads of stuff for 2nd Ed Epic. Also did Man’o’War as Empire (I’ve never lost a game!), Tyranid Attack, Blood Bowl, Necromunda, Mordheim in fact it would probably be quicker to list what I’ve not played.

White Dwarf got me into it proper. Friend got Space Crusade and a copy of White Dwarf, the one where the Shokk Attak Gun debuted. And….that was it. Been hooked ever since and love talking about the background, especially where there’s room for rampant speculation.

Started wargaming in 2003 with lotr and the DeAgostini magazines. Lotr is still my first love, but due to DoW1 and WD my best friend, who had also brought me to lotr, and I started 40K at around 2009, we did a test game of Death Guard vs Space Wolves, DG lost of course since these were the darkest times for CSM imaginable and continued to be until 2016 when the Traitor Legions expansion came out. Edition churn continues to burn us out of 40K, but thankfully there's OPR to use the miniatures.

My circle of friends got into 40K back in 1989. I started with Marines and painted them as Space Wolves (this was before codexes).

Then, WD 127 came out showing off the new Eldar Aspect Warriors and that hooked me and have played Eldar in every edition.

Over the years, I'd start and paint a second army but would sell it while the Eldar remained a staple and growing collection.

By late 7th edition, I was really not enjoying the state of the game and sold my Eldar collection.

A year or so later 8th edition arrived and hooked me back in. I've rebuilt another sizable Eldar army and have 3 other painted (but smaller in number) armies. However, they need a few additional pieces to fit 10th edition.

This hobby served me very well as I've met lifelong friends. I served a 20 year military career and every location I was stationed there was always a thriving 40K scene. The modeling and painted allowed me to express my creative side and let my imagination run wild.

After thousands of 40K games, I still enjoy it immensely. In fact, I played against Tau yesterday (and lost) as I adjust to the points and rules tweaks.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

I got into 40k in 1988.
I got out of 40k about 2014 - but I'm still gaming (just other, not GW games).

Apart from a 3-4 year break in the mid 90s (most of 2nd ed) when I didn't have enough time for miniatures games (work and other interests) I still managed to find a day a month for an rpg session.

How long? Way back, late 80’s with RT. We played it as an RPG, blending both roleplaying and rollplaying. I’ve still got the minis I used for characters. My friend Dave picked up the rulebook and off we went.

As far as armies, my first cohesive force was Blood Angels, as those were the transfers in my first RTB01 box.

White Dwarf 106, 1988: Harlequins on the cover, which instantly caught my interest (an army of sci-fi theatre kids, surprise), but despite collecting a bunch of Harlequin blister packs and a handful of assorted other Eldar, I didn't have an army, or the rules. First edition Space Hulk got me into the hobby proper, and I started buying White Dwarf regularly (they were up to 137 when that started) - eventually Sydney got a GW store and I picked up the 40k second edition box, and those tactical marines plus the Space Hulk terminators formed the core of my first pukka army. Originally Blood Angels just as a holdover from Space Hulk, but I fairly quickly chafed against being tied to established lore and did a little repainting (black helmets) to make my homebrew chapter, the Furies.

1. Been on and off since I was about 10.... so around 20 years, but probably closer to 15 when you take into accounts the breaks.

2. I started with Orks and I'm still a green git to this day. I did have an IG artillery park army many moons ago, but I ended up selling it to fund some other stuff.

3. My mate bought a copy of White Dwarf into school and I thought skaven were the coolest. I then discovered that they played 40k and not fantasy so I went into my local GW with my pocket money, saw a box of Ork Boys and I've been a zogger ever since. The minis for 40k are sick, and the lore is the right type of over the top bonkers that just makes it really fun and enjoyable for me.

Congrats on 1 year, -- Great thread topic.

Q: How long have you been in the hobby?

A: I have been into 40k since 2000, with lots of time spent in the local GW painting after classes and lucky enough to have hosted weekly games. -- I have been out of the hobby for a while for various reasons -- came back into the hobby in 2019.

Q: What was your starter army?

A: The first box I purchased was Thousand Sons and Ahriman and a chaos force to expand on that original purchase.

Q: What got you into the 40k universe?

A: The plot/story arch alongside the Campaign supplements were really what pulled me in. The Armageddon and The Eye of Terror were great concepts that let to some amazing games.

The one image though that kept coming back to me was the cover of Codex: Armageddon (3rd Ed.) revisiting this codex time and time again led to my interest in Orks. 20-some years later Orks have maintained to keep my hobby interest strong.

Cheers!

I took a look and saw a long list of stores in my state and a surprising number of places in my city. I called one I hadn't heard of and the nice lady on the phone told me they had only been open for 11 days. Turns out it was less than a mile from my house.
