....huh. I though it was in limited print already, as not too long ago (about 3 years maybe?) a friend got one for me at Warhammer World.

Semi-stock item at WHW, along with both Realm of Chaos books.
Whilst something with ongoing print runs, whether they’ll be on the shelf on a given visit is dicey, as it seems a run is ordered when stock is low or sold out,

I don’t think so, no. Being GW direct only, we’ll probably have to wait.

If there is a spike in people playing RT, I’ll play with my original RT minis.
Most people don't have and can't afford RT era minis
It's not even about affordability to some. Back in the Rogue Trader days, some of the models were more like tokens than "realistic" depictions of the characters they tried to represent, statuesque poses and all. Scales were all over the place, odd proportions prevalent. If someone wants to use modern minis with old rules, I see nothing wrond with that, its probably even going to look better visually than just sticking to old models. Dont be one of those "purists" who still insist on sticking to the old leaded ways just because its what was available at the time - the rules themselves have no expiration date
Not to disrespect anyone playing with their vintage minis - you do you

RT was a book that helped you make the sci-fi game you wanted to play, rather than obsessing over a tournament-winning army list. Flicking through the bestiary, plot generator, options for multiple vehicles, robots and wargear, you can see a lot of what has been lost over the years. On the other hand, the lore and visual style of 40K was only beginning to take shape and is a far cry from the 40K of today.
For those who like their inquisitors, hive gangs, navigators and rebel plantary governers, RT comes recommended. If not, the closest we have to it's "spirit" today is Stargrave and Necromunda.

Same here! One of the many reasons I won't part with my copy.
Might just order a Squat prospector gang just for old time's sake...

2nd ed starter and the 4th ed starter (Aquila Lander) would be great reissues. Of course, it would be extra cool if the 2nd ed set included Dark Millennium cards too.
tauist wrote:Interesting, would you say it’s an integral part of the starter? I need to add it to my swap shop listing..
It was included in the 2nd ed starter. It was a cardboard dread with stand. It’s an iconic piece of 40k history. For me personally, while I love the idea of it and have some nostalgia for it, I don’t love it enough to seek it out (on the other hand, I still look for RT chaos renegades), but to each their own.

RT was an era before GW had a lot of minis anyways, so it's perfectly fine to use the modern minis or any old sci fi minis you can get your hands on. In fact, that was what a lot of this book was about, a LOT of stuff in it was scratch-built or repurposed from other games (*cough* Battletech *cough*), and the game really encouraged that sort of thing, with a whole "scratch-build" how-to in it.

That's cool for collection / discovery, but people thinking these old game mechanics are so good you'll see plenty of games suddenly popping on the internet tend to forget that these old game mechanics...weren't that very good in reality.
There's a ton of silly randomness and horribly written rules that leave a lot to interpretation (competitive players, stay out of this, you'll have a heart attack otherwise).
If you like to have a sandbox for inspiration and roll die, it's fun to read.

Question for anyone with one of the reprints.
Did they print The Farm scenario on the dark blue paper like the original had?
My memory is of a construction paper-like feel with difficult to read black print on the blue.

A great game to play with a squad or two, against some other squad or two. Defiantly one of the better walks down memory lane, especially since I have all of my old figures, and a batch of e bay specials that I can go back and touch up/ repaint.
As to playing it... I would suggest playing it with old figures, or maybe some of the Horus Heresy Marines. I just fits. Of course, I'm on to playing second edition again, so it's par for the course that I'm taking steps backwards, just for the simplifying my life bit.
As to second edition- It was a step up to platoon level, and 3d edition was Company level. RT era was squad on squad. You could very well use that new Space Hulk terrain, and get yourself stuck in with a couple of bands of Inquisitors from different Ordos chasing down a demon engine, or traitor legion squad, or even the Genestealers and clearing a Hulk itself...
Hell, now that you mention it, Kill team figures come to mind.... Hmmm.....
The game's still a keeper after all these years, and yeah- "Er We Go", and "Waagh!!" are still that awesome! There's just something about seeing those old Lead figures and home made vehicles that tickles your Big Red Button...

Great that this is being re-printed as the eBay prices have gone insane, and it's a great piece of GW history!
If anyone wants to re-create 'battle for the farm' check out these minis by Kev Adams, who was one of the original Ork mini sculptors.
https://knightmareminiatures.com/category/orcs-and-goblins
Marines are a bit easier to come by, especially if you don't mind stripping some old RTB01s, but I recently pledged for this KS and they have some very nice 'inspired by' Rogue Trader-like minis. I assume they will go on general sale at some point soon.

The only thing that discourages me is that I just spent the best part of £40 on GW getting the new Necromunda rules book - though at least that's for an upcoming campaign kicking off end of this week so it will at least see some use!
For me Rogue Trade is a historical curiosity for me because I was never around 40K in that era, so I've no nostalgic feeling. However its a big part of my life for ages so I feel like its something I would get great value out of and heck seeing the original starting point would be very neat!

Likewise, I have no nostalgia for RT. I started right as 4th edition launched so RT is a good bit before my time (hell, I wasn't even born yet when it was released). The artwork, sculpting style, painting style, etc. of that era mean nothing for me and I have no particular interest in it, but I am curious to see what the first draft, as it were, of the lore looked like first hand and what the first iteration of the rules played like - I understand the differences and whatnot in theory, but understanding it in practice by actually playing it is a different story.

Well, I am old enough to have nostalgia for the Rogue Trader rulebook, especially since I wasn't lucky enough to get one when I was a kid.
So a tip of my hat to Grotsnik for the heads up. I'll definitely be snagging one of these.

The same could be said about any edition of 40K really.. they're all flawed one way or another. Difference to the earlier editions is, the old editions never claimed to be for "competitive play"
