Well…

Spoiler:
Its never revealed to be a fake message. At all. Indeed it’s strongly implied not to be, whilst leaving it as a possible plot hook for a sequel.

Just got back from seeing it and even paid the extra for a 3D viewing. While its always nice to see Superman grace the big screen, it felt like a mess and it's only right at the end of the film that I came to the conclusion that they should have spent the effort on a new Supergirl film instead.

Still, the new cast are happy in their work and those who are Sam Emerson-tier comic book fans will probably get the most kick out of all the extra characters in the film.

It definetly is a bit cluttered but how well one thinks they handled that will be a big factor in how much one likes it. I enjoyed it but thought it was good, not great.

It would be difficult for me to care less one way or another about Supergirl and as much as fans care for her I don't she has enough of a general audiences draw to put her at the front to draw people in so trying to use her as an intro to this new DCCU probably would have not gotten the attention or box office they are looking for.

The film seems to be doing well so, unsurprisingly, I'm sure there will be a sequel, not counting things like Justice League. Hopefully they'll use a villian that isn't some form of "bad" Superman ie Zod, Bizarro, (another) Clone, (actual) Ultraman. Maybe we could finally get Brainiac or Metallo?

Good not great I can agree with.

But it’s the Good Good. Not the polite Good.

What works for me is that the world has potential. Metahumans have been around 300 years, where Supes is 3 years into his career.

There’s a lot of room there for interesting stories.

Going back to my previous post?

Spoiler:
I’m genuinely impressed they left the content of Jor-El and Lara’s message to Kal-El is left entirely ambiguous.

Did Lex tamper with it? Superman certainly doesn’t seem to think so. And there’s no on-screen attempt, once the Fortress of Solitude is repaired, to recover and replay the message or analyse the copy Lex had.

That’s a very bold move. It might not be for everyone, but I for one appreciate it. It makes Superman his own man. Never mind what his Kryptonian parents intended. It’s Ma and Pa Kent that instilled him with his morals and values. He doesn’t have to be what Kal-El wanted him to be. It’s a nice, if perhaps overly subtle coming-of-age moment.

No one reads previous posts. I said Sascha Baron Cohen is playing Mephisto in the MCU... flash forward a bunch of pages and I see posts of people shocked that he is playing Mephisto, and that it totally came out of left field.

....

Spoiler:
I did like when Lex was upset and corrected the good guys that he wasn't trying to kill Superman so that he could take over a country but that he was taking over a country knowing Superman would intervene and use that to get authorization to kill Superman. A real hater this Lex guy.

I legitimately loved this movie and while its definitely a bit weird and awkward in parts I think the cast really makes the film. Corenswet has a perfect, slightly dorky hopefulness to him that really allows him to be the best while also not being enough and the chemistry with Brosnahan keeps the film grounded no matter how weird it gets. Lex is great. The other heroes are great, though Hawkgirl definitely gets the short straw of that bunch.

I think what really does it for me is how much the movie gets Superman. It's definitely Gunn's paraphrasing of the meaning behind "what's so funny about truth, justice and the American way" but the movie takes that sentiment and makes it the heart of the character. This movie really gets how important the Planet and Smallville are to making Clark Kent the heart of the character.

Bit on the end:

Spoiler:

I kind of adore Ultraman. I'm not sure if he's a direct shot at Snyder but I find it kind of funny he's the entire Death of Superman era rolled up in one. He's a little too Black Noir and pretty obvious but I did appreciate when the mask breaks he's almost a perfect shot of Doomsday in his original appearance.

From there you basically get a fight against the black suit Superman, mullet and all. The bit of red in his hair is a nice nod that he's probably got a bit of Lex in him, though I couldn't help but feel like they really went after Eisenburg there. In any case, he's very much a perfect strawman of everything people think Superman is devoid of anything that makes him Superman and its a character that's been tumbling through my brain all weekend.

I do particularly appreciate that he's well positioned to return as either Bizarro or the leader of the Crime Syndicate in the future.

I was the only one who laughed at those visual references in the theater.

Spoiler:
The Doomsday costume and the mullet, specifically.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Side note on the merchandising: when we entered the theater on Sat for the 6pm showing, there were half a dozen plush Kryptos for sale on the merch rack. When we left the movie, they were all sold out.

Krypto was definitely not what I expect, but the reason for it was definitely fantastic. Really looking forward to exploring that mess.

I'm going to go see this movie with my Mom and Dad this weekend. My Mom sent me with one mission before we go see the movie.... one spoiler she needs to know (because she will not watch the film it certain things occur in it)

Does a/the dog die?/get badly injured?

I’ll answer that.

Spoiler:
Krypto gets attacked by one of the villains and yelps in pain, then it fades out. Superman spends some time worried about him and looking for the dog. It’s revealed that Krypto is okay, and in fact Lex is keeping him under control by having him chase images of super squirrels in a VR tank.

Dog does not die. They are not insane.

I will say though:

Spoiler:

It's never truly injured, but there is a point where it gets subdued in a way that I could see upsetting people sensitive to such things. Lex is a bad man with no real boundaries when it comes to animals (or people for that matter). The dog will be fine. It's Kryptonian dog and similarly invulnerable, but there's a point where the dog's safety does not feel certain. Probably good to let your mom know he'll be absolutely fine.

I always thought I was an only child, recently though, she was talking about her favorite "children." I was not number 1.

So, this could've been a deal breaker. There's a reason why John Wick 1 has never been aired in our home.
