How do!

A thread apropos of nothing. But I have recently treated myself to three seasons of The A-Team on Prime. And it’s got me wondering how I might go about recreating a typical Saturday as enjoyed when I was a kid. Mostly just for giggles, rather than deep seated craving.

First, I’d have to do my best to find a historical TV listing or three. Because in them days, young’uns, we lived and died by the telly schedule. Missed your favourite show? Tough luck, buster. It’s gone - unless, as I was in later years, lucky enough to have a VCR to record it. Such listing in hand, I’ll have my timings.

From there, start with breakfast, and cartoons. Those I’ve got on DVD. If memory serves, after that I’d go out to play, as after the kids TV came the sport, which I’ve never cared for.

That could mean hobby time for now, or going out for a walk/annoying the Nephloof, then back in time for an episode of the A-Team, Airwolf and that. Oh and probably lunch, as at that time I had regular mealtimes.

For the evening, dinner of course, and an episode of classic Dr Who. Any time not spent watching my shows? Hobby. Oh. And no putting my shows on pause. Except maybe if need the loo. Providing a given show aired on ITV, I can do a timed pause to represent ad breaks.

Don’t think I’ve any plans for this Saturday, so I may give it a try as a bit of fun.

Of course there is real 80s TV and the best of 80s TV - a lot of stuff didn't overlap or had only short windows like Ulysses 31 (~6 weeks in late '85) or late 80s only shows (i.e. Knightmare) vs early 80s only shows (i.e. Transformers, or the gradual fall-off of Hana-barbera cartoons).

Oh I’ll be cherry picking!

Pretty sure Knightmare can be found on YouTube. I’m still surprised we’ve not seen a modernised version of that you know.

Are you sure you're prepared for the sugary high of kids breakfast cereals?

Also don't forget some kids shows started right at the dawn of humanity - ergo straight after the test card. So you've got to get up at least 30mins before the show starts and watch the test card image whilst waiting!

Also any watching of Pokemon must come with at least 5-10 mins of watching Mr Motivator (because that's how it was in them days waiting for This Morning to get past that to get the only good thing they had) -- edit wait that might be more a 90s thing¬!

Sugary Breakfast Cereals? Oh those were a rarity. We never went hungry, and ate good food. But it wasn’t anything fancy until the 90’s. Plain biscuits, mostly plain crisps, and regular Cornflakes (curiously, always Kelloggs!)

Testcard was usually avoided, as I’ve never been an especially early riser. Except on Birthdays and Christmas.

If you got up an hour early you could load up a game on the old c64 and play that for 30 minutes while waiting :p

(to be fair to the old breadbin you had to work pretty hard to stretch out a tape load to 30 minutes, but it could be done... and that's assuming it loaded first time)

I'd suspect you'd have at least occasionally watched Glen Michael's Cartoon Cavalcade, (some years Saturday, some years Sunday)

in the hope that the cartoons on offer would be good.... Usually they were a bit of a dud (atom ant, roger ramjet)

although sometimes you got luck and you got a marvel cartoon (FF usually) or Bugs Bunny

For the full experience (at least here in the US), you should take a break midway through and after each episode and play a couple of 80s toy commercials from youtube. I was going to suggest having a bowl of sugar filled cereal ready to go with the first episode but you've already got breakfast handled!

I second the commercials. You need to be humming “Nothing can stop…The Animal” or “the very best thing of all: there’s a counter in the ball…” or you’re not having a genuine 80’s childhood experience.

I can't properly replicate my childhood sat mornings without the multiple bowls of sugary cereal + about a qtr. of orange juice. :(
If I started a day like that now I'd screw my blood sugar up so bad....

For me, the cornflakes would need to be drenched in The top of the milk. From the time before homogenized milk when bluetits would peck open the bottles to go after the pure cream

You can probably replicate this by putting squirty cream on your cereal

And then Allo-Allo at the back end of the day.

So, in the olden days, you’d have a Milkman who’d deliver Milk to your doorstep.

The Milk wasn’t homogenised as standard, so the cream would rise up to the top.

Delivered in 1 pint bottles, they’d be capped off with pressed foil. And the birdies could happily peck through that, to get the cream that had risen.

Even into the late 90’s this was pretty normal. There’d be times on my way to school I’d buy a bottle of orange juice off the Milkie whilst he’s in his rounds.

It was also common practice to wash your empties and leave them out for collection. That I believe stemmed from when the Milkie would refill from his cart, rather than carry full bottles. Though before my time, I think they did carry some full bottles as well though.

Early sustainable packaging, that.

We support local business by still getting glass bottle milk deliveries to keep our baseline needs met. They were the only place that had eggs during lockdown and didn’t take on any more customers in that time so we are also hedging our bets on future world disasters

The milk itself is fully homogenised, so the birds don’t seem to be as interested any more.

Also Allo Allo may be perfect comedy. Or it may be massively of its time and I am suffering from rose tinted spectaclitis.

Bit of both?

Perfect for its time, and for those who enjoyed it at the time, it still holds up.

To fresh eyes? I honestly don’t know. I mean, it’s not terribly PC. But when you’re mocking Nazis, I guess you can get away with an awful lot.
