Welcome all to the 123rd round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.

This month the topic is: May Day! - Your entry should either be calling for help or responding to such a call. Alternatively, celebrating spring. Maybe part of a military parade? Je ne c’est pas. M’aidez! There are a number of ways this theme can be interpreted, pick one and run with it.

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of May and will end at midnight EST on May 31st. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

I've been in a fantasy mood of late and assembled these gnolls and their, umm, dinner guests over the last week. I'll try to paint them if my mood doesn't swing another way again.

Ill be tackling these lovely ladies:

Because they're obviously masked, dancing and celebrating but also there are the poor blood slaves that need saving.

Hi everybody. This will be my first entry in the painting challenge. I've assembled some black knights this week, including a wight king/ lord. And thought I'd take the time to paint them this month. There's no major conversion work, just a head turn on the wight king and chopping up the new base for that model so that he fits on the standard 30 x 60 old world cavalry base. The sarcophagus lid has then been spread through the unit for an extra basing element. The base conversion needs a final bit of detailing to finish the gap filling on the wight king base.

I know the restriction is 5 models, so If I can get them all painted I'll just drop one from the final pic.

Cavalry to the rescue!

Late April-early May is known as Golden Week here, as there are a bunch of national holidays all bunched together. May 1st (May Day) is not among them, but others are Showa Day, Constitution Day, Green (or Greenery) Day, and Children's Day. In honor of that last one, I'll be painting these children, all from Bad Squiddo:

Now showing various models from the previously abandoned projects!

Painting total as of 25 May 2025: 67plus a Deva King statue

Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

In the immortal words of Monty Python, "And now for something completely different!" (And no, it's not a man with three buttocks)

In the Federation Star Fleet, the Constitution-class Heavy Cruiser was the backbone of the fleet, taking on many duties, including patrolling the various neutral zones between the Federation and hostile powers like the Klingons and Romulans, exploring uncharted territory, and responding to various emergency calls which could range from disease outbreaks to terrorist attacks to actual space monsters attacking a planet. My entry for this month's challenge is one of these ships, and one somewhat famous adversary:

For those who are curious, these miniatures are for the board game Star Fleet Battles, a game set in an offshoot of the Star Trek universe and featuring a lot of the same alien races and technology seen in the original series. The ship is obviously the same class as the Enterprise (but mine will ultimately be a different ship, the U.S.S. Kongo, which features heavily in the Star Fleet Battles lore). The monster should be familiar to most who have seen the show, and it features in one of SFB's solitaire monster scenarios (in which it is controlled by automatic rules). It is obviously heavily based on the planet killer seen in the episode "The Doomsday Machine". These models should be fun to paint, although the cruiser is going to be a serious test of my freehand skills, particularly the lettering.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Very much looking forward to how you tackle the Kongo, ZergSmasher. I painted a Starfleet task force over a decade ago, and would love to see a fresh approach before I tackle another one.

Since there is no better way for an Ork to spend a beautiful "May day", but to cruise with his friends,
I will be tackling one of these here -
depending on the time I can manage to find, maybe some of them...

They were not on top of my list, but with this theme they got a higher priority =)

Just opened the package - seeing how much there is to do with the Wartrike.... I couldn`t even build it in one day cause you have to paint it in parts befor putting it together...
-So I guess I was too optimistic hoping to finish all 4 bikes
- so I am just going to concentrate on the big one...

A poor villager was enjoying a brisk stroll in the country side on a fair day, during the month of may, that was until.......*THUMP*.......*THUMP*.....

For this month I'm going to try and finish at least one of the little giants I didn't get around to finishing a few months ago and the fleeing villager.

One is base coated so I won't include him, I think he is maybe to far along to count.

Thanks, it took a little longer than I expected, as I had to let the wood glue set before I could add the next disc...I have also reinforced it with a brass pin under the top step..so if someone places a pewter Terminator on it...it stays upright.

Quick WIP shot:

Basic hull color on the Kongo. Outer hull basecoated on the Planet Killer, and I've done most of the color on the inside to give it that menacing orange glow. I'll probably add a bit of yellow in the very middle. The outer hull will probably get a combination of stippling and drybrushing with various grays to give it a timeworn look like it had in the original show. At some point I'm going to have to bite the bullet and start detailing the Kongo; that's going to be a serious test of my freehand skills! Hopefully I can keep my hands steady enough to make it look okay.

I finished painting both geezers. Nice of them to be so uncomplicated to paint. On to the gnolls which are larger and look like they each have more going on.

Daia T'Nara - Hospitallers chapter Inceptors

Spoiler:

There's an element of 'eh good enough' there (particularly the guns, I hated painting the guns so once they'd had their base grey and a plain wash I moved on), but the personal heraldry the wiki says Hospitallers have on their armour was fun.

May Day? More like Maid Day!

My FLGS has a lot of new people getting into killteam, so I thought I would make a loaner team for the store. Something very manly and intimidating. No idea if I'll have a squad printed in time, but I'll at least have a commander ready.

Don't lose heart! That's where I was at before this evening.

I've now spent a couple of hours getting contrast on the bones of my wights. It was even more fiddly than I expected trying to get the brush inside the steeds. I wish I had printed them darker and then done a zenithal spray, but hey it's done now!

The missing colour I need for the next step and my basing materials should arrive tomorrow!

Ill be working on them Saturday and Sunday evening and I'll get a WIP pick up Sunday evening.

I've had less time than I'd like this week and fell a little behind schedule. I'm still on the first gnoll and not very far along at all. Hopefully the weekend will see that rectified. Else I doubt I'll be able to finish all five models.
