How can anyone enjoy it when some episodes are just one of the characters 'powering up' (also known as looking constipated but not giving in)

Im not sure, who the hell is this evil dude?, he should be cell or boo, and i wish Goku was in it, il watch it but im not sure what to expect, i love DBZ.


p.s When i said goku i meant the proper goku, not some guy with non-goku hair. And thats not piciallo, doesnt even look like picallio.

He looks more like the Piccole than he did on the first preview shots, so I'm a little more optimistic then before.

Agreed. Though to be fair, the manga (comic) version of the series is considerably better in that it involves a lot less grunting and powering up.

The grunting and powering up is the best part!

i liked dragonball, but dear god, once again Hollywood destroys a perfectly good series,

if Piccolo is the bad guy then Goku should be really young...in fact im not going to even bother pointing out whats wrong with it and the only thing that is right with it:

Well, if you go by the comics (I recently re-read it, so it's fresh in my mind), Goku would be about 15-16 when he first runs into Piccolo (older version). and 18-19 when he fights with younger Piccolo.

16? Are you sure about that. I remember their first encounter from the anime and to me seemed 14 at best.

Well, if you go by the comics, Goku is 12ish at his first Budokai tournament. Those tournaments are every 3 years. He doesn't face off against young Piccolo until 2 tournaments later, which suggests he should be 18-19. He faces off against old Piccolo right after his 2nd Budokai, where he's 15-16.

I always thought he would be much younger at his first tournament.

At the risk of suffering a Flaming I must say that is far as I'm concerned Manga is the most overrated Genre I've ever encountered. I even watched Akiria, which imp informed is the pinnacle of the genre and found it boring beyond belief.

Am I also the only one who hates in when martial arts are enhanced by special effects. To Martial Arts are impressive enough I don’t want them do defy the laws of physics. As far as im concerned the genre peaked with Bruce Lee.

This. To expand on Platuan4th's comment, manga refers to the comic book form of Japanese comics, whilst anime refers to the animated television/movie form.

Also, anime is not a genre, it's just a medium/style that is used to tell stories, much like Pixar-like 3D animation and regular live-action movies. Standard genres (ie. Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Drama, Weird Tentacle-involved somethings) exist within the greater classification of "anime". [/end anime-nerdboyness]

Admittedly, I can see how Akira can be slow and boring, but to each his own. It's like me and Reservoir Dogs - I found it pretty dull despite the cult status it holds, and I usually like most Tarantino films. Akira is also greatly condensed from its original book form (as most book -> movie transitions tend to) and cuts out a lot of development. Basically, it's not for everyone. On a technical level, the animation for Akira is amazing given the time that it was made.

I agree with you completely on this one. I'm kind of tired of seeing wired stunt work in martial arts films. One of the reasons I have a certain appreciation for Jackie Chan's films. If only Jet Lee did a martial arts movie without wires.... It's not like he doesn't know how to do martial arts for real.

This movie looks....not good.
I kind of appreciate Chow Yun-Fat as Roshi, but why the hell did they need to change the story-line? I hate it when producers/script-writers take a perfectly acceptable story premise but completely change it around for the sake of making the movie more "epic" than it needs to be.

What the hell is so wrong with the original story-line:
"There's a kid with a tail that's really strong and talented in martial arts, and lives in a fantastical world where a 'God' created a set of Dragon Balls that when collected together would summon a Dragon that would grant you a wish, and every once in a while he collects them to wish for something with his friends and has adventures"?

In that case, I can heartily reccomend Ong Bak, with Tony Jaa. Korean I think, and not a single piece of wire-fighting in sight. Everything they do, they do for real. Absolutely stunning pieces....and whilst I'm at it....

Movies suck FTMP in this day and age. Went out with the wife last night to try and find a movie. Had a sitter and everything. Not a damn thing worth seeing at the cinema. Cryin shame. We just went and had a real nice dinner.

Some of you can pi$$ on it if you want, but the Dragonball manga is an absolute classic of that medium. The manga is almost a different story, though. The anime story is stretched out to a ridiculous degree because anime tends to "catch up" to its associated manga due to the different rates at which they cover the same material. So yeah, there's a lot of downtime (filled with training and the aforementioned grunting) in the anime. The manga is shockingly fast-paced in comparison. You'd really be surprised.

I don't hold much hope for the movie, though. DB is a very quirky series that IMO really only operates well in its original form.

I like how they stuck Evolution on the end of the Tital.

Marketing Exec: "We can't just call it Dragonball, we need a second word, something that really shows what this movie is all about."

Marketing Director: "I've got it, 'Evolution'!"

I do lot like the Notion of sticking cool words at the end of games or movies to take things in a "New Direction" that you have to play 6 degrees of seperation to like to the actual plot.

I'm gonna make Star trek: Acendant. It's about a 1750 sea captain who uses the stars to "trek" across the high seas. His name is Kirk so it ties all in....

The anime series sucked first time round but a heap of my friends were right ito it. They used to spend hours watching ripped DVDs of it.

I'm pretty sure Ong Bak is Thai. But that movie was guilty of gratuitous sound effect "enhancement". One thing that really bothers me about martial arts films these days is how every impact is exaggerated with over the top crunching noises. Way to kill all believability.

I will say that I find most anime and manga(and by extension, the neckbeards that love it so-not sure about present company ) terrible. Jin-roh was interesting, especially for the "cut a man in half with a machine gun" scene, and akira was interesting technically because it was 100% hand animated. Go watch that movie knowing that everything you see was drawn by hand and it gets more interesting. My God, the shattering glass.
