I said somewhat important.

If I have the models, I might as well play.

If I play, it might as well be for something.

I don't play much casual games... maybe if I did regularly I'd have a different opinion.

No, I prefer to retain some flexibility. Tournament players are obsessive about their rules and tend to look down on casual players, as if we aren't doing it right. At least that's the impression I get. My only actual tournament experience was at a local con, and everybody except me was too drunk to know whether they were even playing 40K. Apparently I should have kept up, and I might have had a better time.

No it is not, I've found too many game systems aren't balanced enough to suit high level competitive play.

40K is too fiddly for me to even consider anything other than a friendly local tournament. I prefer playing with friends and I prefer fluffier armies.

As a regular here on dakka AND on the tournement scene, you've got this completely Bass-ackwards.

Most of the "looking down" that goes on is online with "for fun" players hawking their ridiculous moral high ground against "WAAC" tournement gamers.

There is a competitive streak in all of us. Judging by how massive some of these tourneys can get, I think this is true. I love to play at tourneys and find the ringers. Good times.

You don't need a tourney to be that competitive. Bit yeah, all of us love a good (well run) tournament.

unfortunately almost all tournaments near me are on Saturdays and I am NEVER able to go on Saturdays, and since I can't go, they're not important to me -_-

At this point, I could care less about Tournaments. I don't have / won't make the time, and I don't need to prove anything anymore.

If the time becomes available, maybe I'll get back in just to have fun running through the bottom bracket with other semi-casual players.

The land of cotton.

GW games are not written tight enough to be played "competitively" by any stretch of the imagination.

I do go to tournaments on occasion, but only for the lure of three (or five) guaranteed games. If they are all fun all the better.

An important part, by no means.

A small (very small) part.

Then again, many of our tournies are more of a social thing than a pure competition thing. Sure, we get the ultra-competitives, but mostly it's about getting together with the mates and sharing beers.

I went for some what important.

I love going to tournaments as its a good excuse for a weekend away doing something I love, I'm not one of these WAAC people, I have a competitive streak don't get me wrong but thats because I am playing a game, the whole point of playing a game whether it be Monopoly, Risk or Warhammer/40k is to TRY and win and have fun doing it, that doesnt mean that I have to play on the rules to get around opponents to win, if I lose because I have made an error in my tactical play or because of a few key dice rolls that didnt go my way fair play to my opponent i'll still enjoy myself, smile and shake his hand at the end of game because I have enjoyed playing someone new.

Thats the best thing about tournys you get to meet like minded gamers whom you wouldnt normally play against get 6 guarenteed games in a weekend make some new friends and hey if you win the big prize at the end of it then that just sweetens the deal.

When you give total control to a computer, it’s only a matter of time before it pulls a Skynet on you and you’re running for your life.

Yes, sadly, some people do not understand "COmpetition" they think people should bring fluff to competitions. Thats slowed. Its like a sports team not putting thier best players out there because the line up would be "Too good" or "Cheesy" . Friendly games are a different story.

I really like to play in tournaments, but I tend to stick with RTT style tourneys. I've attended a handful of IndyGTs, but I usually leave with mixed emotions. I get 3 games in one day and the chance of winning something, what's not to like? We don't have a real hardcore tourney scene in my area so that probably makes a big difference.

I like tournaments that dont have winning as only focus like 'ard boyz but rather tournaments where you get more points for having an awesome painted army, written fluff and not being a jerk. Those were just awesome where you really get good competition with beautiful armies.

Since the tournament scene here was murdered by GW Ive only had casual games, and thus far Im not impressed, it seems no one paints their army, proxies are everywhere, games take all bloody night, they all suck at the game and have to ask me what the rules are every 5 minutes.

Hopefully the tournament scene comes back because this lamehammer business is terrible.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

I don't think the rules set particularly works for competitive play, hence all the RAW vs RAI arguments, cries of people exploiting the wording of the rules, etc etc etc.

I've played in a couple of tournaments, and we were lucky with our oppoenents, didn't bring a particularly 'competitive' list, and had fun playing lots of games in a weekend.

But they're not in any way 'important' to me. Jst a change of pace once in a while.

It's interesting to see the results up there - Over 50% couldn't care less, and only a fifth consider tournaments important. Maybe we should change all those 'Casual Gamer Mafia' comments to 'Casual Gamer Majority'...

Of course I love playing with my friends; we share many laughs over a game of 40k. But it's good to have different opponents now and then. Just showing up to a GW or comic shop, you never know what kind of opponent you're dealing with. As a veteran of this game since 2nd edition, I generally know what I'm doing. With my Imperial Guard, I shot some guy off the table in 3 turns with no losses. I don't get any enjoyment out of that; he certainly didn't either. I don't want to have to tell someone how to make an army list or to put their units in cover. I want to play the game against someone else and not me. Tournaments typically bring experienced players to the field who actually make it a battle.

A good balance between competitive Tourneys and friendly games is necessary in order to become a better player and a better sportsman. Now, unfortunately, I have no regular gaming opponents, but before when I was into the tourney scene I found that my casual games were 1000 times more enjoyable and that many of my opponents who were also tourney regulars were a lot more fun to spar with. We'd give each other tips on how to "beat our armies" and what item combos were deadly. When we'd meet at a tourney, it was always no-holds-barred, and when we met an army that we knew the ins and outs of, we were better at playing against them. All of this is stemming from my WFB experience, not 40K. But, the way I see it gamers are gamers and the tourney scene is the tourney scene.

And for all the people who poo-poo tourneys and tourney players, I can guarantee when you win one or a trophy, your whole attitude will change and you'll be kicking yourself for not doing it sooner.

Yes vary much so, the reason is my FLGS dose tourneys monthly and we earn points at the tourneys and at the end of the year the person with the highest points gets a grand prize, no one know what it is so were all trying to find out what it is.

Not at all. I've found that the second that money or prizes become involved, 40K stops being about having fun and all about some guy with questionable social skills taking all of his pent up rag eout on everyone around him.

I've found that the tournament mentality actually hurt my love of the game, because I got too wrapped up in it.

I've tried to steer away from that and play with what I like instead of what always wins, and I want to focus more on campaign/scenario games again, which is what got me to love the game in the first place.

I haven't played a game yet, so tournaments are a far thought at my desk. I figure, when I have a complete army, I'll enter a few. If I'm any good, it could become a bigger part of the hobby for me. Winning stuff is fun.
