The world is quiet here.

When Father Nurgle decided he wanted the planet of Emwa Prime for his own playground, he launched a mighty incursion into the mortal plane, vomiting forth from the warp in a mass of putrid bodies and plagues. He sent one of his most beloved Great Unclean Ones, Lord W’at’shem, and his twin, Lord Wes’mol, into the breach to claim Nurgle’s prize.

Lord W’at’shem discovered a weakening of the fabric between the warp and real space near a deserted Imperial chapel on Emwa Prime and tore a hole, pushing his forces through. However, little did he know that Tzeentch also had his multi-colored eye on the planet, and was also aware of the thin fabric there…

I haven’t done one of these in a long, long time. But I figured, they have always been pretty popular on other forums where I post, so I thought I’d give it another go.

Here’s how it works:

First, the game is in the books already, so you won't be influencing the outcome by discussing.

I will post this battle report one turn at a time, and let you discuss as the game is going on how you think things are going. Who is getting the upper hand? What should each player do in the next turn? Where have the players gone wrong? It’s up to you. Discuss whatever you like. The report is only as good as the discussion it creates, so participate early and often.

-------------

So. To begin, my army list. I made a few changes from my normal list: put wings on my DPs, swapped one unit of Plaguebearers for a second unit of Nurglings. The list, after those changes, looked like this:

The Invasion of W'at'shem the Putrid

W'at'shem the Putrid (180)
Great Unclean One
Unholy Might
Cloud of Flies

Wes'mol, Lord of the Flies (180)
Great Unclean One
Unholy Might
Cloud of Flies

Pus-Cannons(105)
3 Flamers

Pus-Cannons (105)
3 Flamers

Pus-Cannons(105)
3 Flamers

10 Plaguebearers (175)
Daemonic Icon

10 Plaguebearers (175)
Daemonic Icon

10 Plaguebearers (150)

9 Nurglings (117)

9 Nurglings (117)

M'har'cei, Prince of Pestilence (215)
Daemon Prince
Mark of Nurgle
Daemonic Flight
Iron Hide
Cloud of Flies
Noxious Touch

L'heasa'wem, Prince of Decay (215)
Daemon Prince
Mark of Nurgle
Iron Hide
Daemonic Flight
Cloud of Flies
Noxious Touch

My opponent said he wanted to practice with an army list he’s taking to an upcoming tournament. Despite my loathing for Special Characters, I said I didn’t mind that he was using the Changeling (What is everyone’s obsession with the Changeling? I think he’s pretty much useless.) . Besides, his list was plenty brutal either way:

4 x Herald of Tzeentch on chariots with devourer, bolt and breath
2 x 3 flamers, each unit with one bolt
3 x Soul Grinders with tongue
3 x 7 horrors with one bolt
1 x 7 horrors with one bolt and changeling

Ouch. That’s a lot of fireballs coming my way.

So. Daemons on Daemons. Pure Tzeentch vs. (mostly) Pure Nurgle. Just looking at the army lists, make your predictions. Who has the stronger list? Why?

I’ll be posting up Turn One shortly, but I want to give you a little time to discuss.

What is the Mission type and are there pictures or a description of the board that can be posted?

It's going to come down to how well Tzeentch rolls on the first turn it comes down. If they roll well, and manage to wipe out enough of you, they'll be able to avoid close quarters in the latter turns. If Nurgle's staying power wins out, then they'll win in the CC that'll take up the rest of the game.

Hm. It might be easier to play after the first turn. Comparing lists may not have been the best way to start. Oh, well. Let’s roll on the first turn, and maybe business will pick up.

The mission rolled up was Annihilation (Kill ‘Em All!) with Spearhead deployment (not that it mattered). I won the dice off, and chose to go first.

The board was pretty complicated: a long wall representing the exterior of the chapel ran across the table. Difficult to cross, blocked LOS to/from non-monstrous/vehicles. A few scattered buildings, some crates, and some trees.

The Tzeentch forces started showing up first, with three Soul Grinders appearing just outside of the chapel wall and taking up positions near the trees. They were joined by a herald who soared into the trees. Inside of the chapel, two units of flamers appeared, also joined by a Herald, and they all took off running. The upper right corner of the field was pretty well locked down; it was going to tough to strike there without either falling onto one of the enemies or getting blasted in the face immediately upon arrival.

Nurgle’s children poured out of rifts of their own. Lord W’at’shem and Lord Wes’mol appeared in the top center of the field, immediately waddling off toward the Soul Grinders. Prince L’heasa’wem appeared at the far right, just inside of the wall. Plaguebearers filled the lower temple, while Pus-Cannons popped into the center of the field.

The Pus-Cannons unloaded on the Flamers at center, pushing one back into the warp. The rest of the Nurgle forces began to run, the Plaguebearers spreading out to avoid as much Flamer fire as possible, while the rest of them made their way toward the forces of Tzeentch. First blood to Nurgle, but the Tzeentch forces were in position to counter, and counter quickly.

And there’s turn one! What do you think will happen next? What should each player do or not do? Discuss!

Uhhh, let me think... If I were Tzeentch, I'd focus fire L'heasa'wem. The Great Unclean Ones are fire soaks, so just outrun them. The Pus-Cannons are in a good place to get eaten by that Herald. The nearest Soul Grinder is going to have to run for its life, but anything short of double sixes for the Great Unclean One means it'll escape.

Were I Nurgle, I'd think that if L'heasa'wem survives, I'll be in a good position to box all those Soul Grinders into the corner where I can tear them with good old MC 2D6 pen. M'har'cie should make haste to kill that Herald. Mopping up the 'easiest' kill points (Soulgrinders, Heralds) will make it easier in the end game where you can just outlast the small arms fire. I'm just concerned the MCs will be weakened enough from the brawl in the corner that they will get killed by the Horrors and Flamers.

Looks to me like Tzeentch's minions are in a tight spot. I do agree with DarkHound: concentrate tongue fire and the flamers' BOC on L'heasa, backing the Grinders away from the GUOs. And try to down the Nurgle flamers with the Herald. It looks as though Tzeentch's Host may well lose one Grinder.

An annihilation mission against a Nurgle host with 2 GUOs and several meaty plaguebearer packs? That's going to be an uphill battle.
