Subject: Anphelion Base - a project log.

Drop Trooper with Demo Charge
|
Long inspired by “Xenology: Notes From The Alien Bestiary Of Biegel, And Studies Of It’s Vile Specimens, By Those Present At It’s Destruction”, a Black Library publication. I wanted to make a playfield based on an underground laboratory. After I mapped it out on pattern paper, realized the scope was too big, and shelved it. A year later, we did a two-table Apoc game, with one table being on a ship. I was able to use some of the rooms I had started, and was able to mock-up enough to represent halls and corridors on a 6' x 9' table. (At this point I had never seen an actual copy of Space Hulk, so had no inspiration from that in designing a rectangular "convention center" style layout.) So that was over and got packed up.
Fast forward another year and Space Hulk comes out (or rather is re-released) to a new generation. Love the concept, fast and fun to play. Picked up a copy, played a few times... then packed it away. Then I saw Nedius’ 3-D Space Hulk thread
http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218330, and was blown away. Loved the details and bookmarked it so I could follow his progress.
Jump a few more months ahead... and the new Tyranid Codex comes out. Another of my group's players had an Apoc-sized 'Nid army, and had spent three or so years converting, customizing and GS-ing. The new Codex made every one of his Warriors and Carnifexs invalid. Sad Panda. So he opted to find them a new home rather than deal with the situation. So to keep them “in the family”, I adopted them. Wh00t!! As when I got into Tau I picked up the corresponding IA book, I picked up The Aphelion Project. Always in love with the FW resin terrain, I knew now that I had to attempt this myself as my next big project. I scaled up the templates in the back as described, and they seemed small. Then I realized they were really spot-on in scale with… yep, Space Hulk.
But I didn’t want to make an Apoc-size SH table. I wanted Terminators to march down the corridor side-by-side. An Inquisitor to walk through the halls with his Acolytes in tow, not crowding him. Room for good HTH combat. Then I thought… what if I made something that could double as an underground laboratory? If played outside, the walls would have an AV14, and could be breached like a bunker. If played underground, the negative space would be impassible earth. This would maximize my invested time and resources, if the terrain could be played in a variety of ways. And best yet, I could use the rooms I started and filed away and a starting point. Score.
I took a modular movement tray board and snapped it in half. This would be my standard corridor length and width. If anything, at least they would line up. So I scaled everything up from there, using Bastion middle walls for the corridors, with the weapon port on the side. And Bastion first floor walls for the rooms, with their more “window-ey” fire ports. Yes, they’re different heights, but I would worry about that later.
So then it becomes a project out of control... but - can't - seem - to - stop. Yes, it’s made out of wood. It's cheap, and I'm good with it. I was thinking of using 1/4" Luan for the basing, but it could still flex and warp. So I went with 1/2" ply for some, and 1/2" MDF for a majority of the rooms. The half-inch height to me, establishes it as a real structure, with a foundation built into/onto the landscape. I’ll just carve into it a bit to rough it up visually and add some basing. Heavy yes, but then again some really solid $#!t. Unfortunately it is now my most massive terrain project to date, occupying some five tall and four short totes at last count. Since there will be a lot of interior detail work to be done, I wanted to bang it out as efficiently as possible. Yea, some walls aren’t true square, the roof is a little wobbly, but oh darn… I think I can fill a 20’ table for an Apoc game though, so that’s where the “Wow” factor will come in.

Construction Model:
Here is the first completed building. I'll use this as a template and guide... trying to make the other buildings as uniform as possible. I wanted some sort of dome on the roof, to represent the high-ceiling inside, kind of church-like. I was unwilling to spend the time trying to recreate the FW style or make an octagon shape. Using found objects is my style, and trademark, so bowels from the Dollar General it was! This size and shape bowl has a good flat lip to glue down with Liquid Nails. I cut a small hole in the bottom so it wouldn’t “burp” when applied. It’s shallow and narrow enough to allow the roof to be nested upside-down for storage, and can now be stacked. The foot is also the same size for a 60mm base or Lego disc… for the Comms Array and Quad Guns to mount to the top.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09941b.jpg
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09939b.jpg
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09938b.jpg
SH bulkheads are mounted to the inside and outside of each room. All rooms will have bulkheads, and secondary airlocks will be made for rooms that lead to nowhere. The crossroads will have bulkheads but not the corridor sections. Each room has matching doors, each crossroad will have matching doors, etc. Yep! That’s a lot of doors! I’ll make some sort of widget to designate if the door is open during game play since they’ll be permanently mounted to the end.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09935b.jpg
I used cross-stitch mesh for the floors of the rooms. It’s cheap (…a six-pack of sheets from Wal-Mart for $2), easy to cut, and looks industrial to me. Spray mount it later, give it some paint and a little dry brush and it should be golden.

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09933b.jpg
I’m using thread spools to keep the walls square and true to make my 90o angle while gluing. They’ll just be the consistent industrial gak making up the support systems, air reclamation, whatever.

Wow, what a great start! And the dual above-below-ground thing is a sound idea. With something this labor-intensive, you've got to re-use every chance you get.
Speaking of which: I just saw (I think on the Painting Corps' website) that some of the BOLS guys are making their own Anphelion base for the upcoming BOLSCon. You might want to at least share ideas with them- or maybe even collaborate. Go check it out.
Looking forward to updates!

The square plastic mesh will be available in Hobby Craft, John Lewis and probably PoundLand (in kits for kids cross stitch). It's for doing wool based cross stich and tapestry type stuff. It should be in the needlecraft section.
Loving the base btw. I'm looking forward to how it progresses

Assembled/Configuration Concept:
Here you can see how each wall was lined up. After assembly, the corners were trimmed down to within 1/8”.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09780c.jpg
Before I start painting, I’ll fill in this gap with some cardstock cut and wedged in.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09779c.jpg
Test-fit of the first corridors, crossroads and rooms. The corridors were where the scale was established. For simplicity, I snapped a modular movement tray in half and used that for the spacing. Then the base board was made a hair wider then it would be with the two Bastion walls. Note: The lower lip on the bottom side edges of the Bastion walls were shaved off so the wall could be glued flush to the tray sheet. Otherwise there would be a 1/16” gap.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09774c.jpg
As you might be noticing, there’s not a lot of exact measurements being made… The crossroads turned out a smidge narrower then the corridors. Meh. And I’m using superglue on wood… go figure. On a strategic note: if my opponent is critiquing the scenery – he’s not paying attention to the Genestealers behind him! Ne?
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09771c.jpg
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09769c.jpg
You can see here how the brass sheet is smaller then the styrene wall. Well, it just is. I knew assembly would be a little wonky in places, and this allows me to trim down the styrene to fit, without cutting into the brass as well.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09766c.jpg
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09761c.jpg
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09758c.jpg
I put a COD girder at one end of each corridor so there would be something visually to tie two or more sections together.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09754c.jpg
On this one, I didn’t start flush at one end... so it left a small gap. But then, the girder from the next section will butt up against this and hide it for the most part.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09751c.jpg
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09749c.jpg
For continuity, I’ve decided to make all of the corridors, crossroads, airlocks, etc. have the modular tray as the floor. This will differentiate it from the mesh floor of the rooms.

I noticed the stamped brass/copper on the outside surface of the walls. Will you be using that on the inside as well? Or something else for added depth and texture? I think it might look barren and lack detail without something on those surfaces.

I haven't resolved that... Kind of scared to start thinking about set dressings for all of the rooms. I want to see if the FW wall incerts will fit visually, but my walls aren't the same shape. So I might just go with some textured spray that can be drybrushed... get my detail through paiint and such. I may try to find a similar, yet different screen to cut and place, but the idea of cutting that much mesh makes me sad. Perhaps some textured wallpaper will provide a foundation to work with. Cutting with a scisors and using PVA glue would make me happy. There might not be a simple, and affordable solution.
Dutch508 wrote:Excellent ideas and work. Now you'll have to find a guy named Mike to paint the inside of your dome.
The domes are faux. So no skylight action. They just need to look good from the outside, and when the action moves into the room the roof will be removed and set aside somewhere. One cool thing about having the rooms covered: The person setting up the table, can place boobytraps and hiding 'Nids that will only be revealed when the Imperial player opens/breaches bulkhead to the room. Cool idea, ne?

Landing Pad:
The new GW landing pads don't fit in with the Anphelion style... and are smaller than the FW ones. Also, I wanted something that could support both my kit-bash Valkyrie as well as possibly a Thunderhawk-size vehicle, and a rectangular pad seemed a more efficent shape for the intended use: offloading specimens, samples and supplies for the base. I rembered picking up two matching platters I rescued from the trash from an office party a year or so back, and then actually found them.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09821d.jpg
I loved the surface detail on the bottom, and the curved lip makes a good slope when inverted. Lays flush.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC09822d.jpg
Here's a test for scale... and it's spot-on for my needs.
I'll build a ramp off the long end, so cargo can be whisked straight off and down. It will be removable for storage. I would later find out these trays are too big for the totes I store and transport my terrain in. I don't want to have one odd size tote just for these... hmmm. The solution: To cut them in half. First I would fill them in with some foam board, so that when cut, they would still support weight and not collapse like a paper cup cut in thalf. If it works, I'll take some pics.

Love the design, but I don't think it will fit onto what I have. The FW stuff is very specific in it's cross-use happiness. I'd have to redesign the tops... and then, it might be "too cool" a topper for my building style. Might mod the Aegis Defense Line quad-gun and call it counts-as.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh sorry, why yes it is. I took the Avatar “RDA Scorpion Gunship” to the band saw for this. Chopped four-inches off the tail at an existing mold line, then pinned and epoxied it to the stump. This makes it the same length as the GW plastic Valkyrie.
(Way-Back Machine Design Note: I want all of my kit-bashed Imperial flyers to be VTOL. I just think it’d be neat. It all started with my Thunderhawk Gunship concept using a GI Joe Sigma-6 Dragonhawk. Several others have used this as a starting core, but I believe I’ve come up with a cool spin on it. Unfortunately, the person I had helping me with the work has yet to ship it back to me for me to be able to finish it. Sad Panda. So it’s back to the drawing board with someone else, or, since it’s been over eight months I feel more confident at giving a crack at it myself.)
So now… even though it’s a little wider than the Valkyrie, it’s justified because it’s “lower” technology. I cut off and trimmed down all of the hard points under the wings and front canards, removed all of the Avatar weapon systems, etc. and shaved everything flush. I’ll figure out how to magnetize and where to mount the “official” weapon load outs later. I then trimmed down the back of the fuselage at the same angle as the Arvis Lighter, and added a similar door/ramp. I ditched the landing skids and replaced them with two in-line feet from a LEGO Galidor: TDN Module (8315). It looks really neat on the game table.
I have kits and parts to make two squads of three for a future Apoc game. That’s a summer project as I’m in my ‘Nid phase right now. But add to that, two more as a cargo-lifting variant. I loved the new FW jeep transporter, and knew I had to do it better. So I’m working on something that can bring in a resupply container or a Carnifex carcass for dissection. Pics of that later.

I've gotta admit I was a bit skeptical when I saw the wood "foundations" but this is really coming along nicely.
Is the Inquisitor's chamber a cut down 5-gallon paint bucket ?
I really like the landing pad and the shield at the entrance point.
Of topic, how was the Arvus to assemble? I've been tempted to get one but haven't had the best experience with FW models. The original resin Valkyrie I got had parts so warped as to be unusable. The replacement parts were only slightly better.

Is the Inquisitor's chamber a cut down 5-gallon paint bucket ? I really like the landing pad and the shield at the entrance point.
Yes it is! I had made the landing pad last year... and now needed something to support it. I was going to use the bucket to curve and mold some tagboard to, then remove it. But in my quest for the right size, I came accross this specific bucket, that when cut at the lowest support ring, below the handle holes, it was THE EXACT SAME DIAMETER as my landing pad. Go freeakin figure! The support ring also gives it a half-inch flat surface to rest on - so it dosen't fall through like a street manhole cover. I traced the inside and cut a piece of MDF for the floor. Then drove pneumatic staples through the side to secure it after I spooge'd in some Liquid Nails. Then cut the door to size and inset a frame to match the corridor section.
Of topic, how was the Arvus to assemble? I've been tempted to get one but haven't had the best experience with FW models. The original resin Valkyrie I got had parts so warped as to be unusable. The replacement parts were only slightly better.
The one I received... was surprisingly well done and simple to assemble. The wings have the slightest curve in them even after dipping in hot water. But that's only noticible from directly behing the model. The only point of contention is the loading ramp/door. It assembles closed into a nook. If you want it to be open, you have to cut out a notch in the bottom of the nook. If you want it functional, you need to remove the outer lip of the nook alltogether.

Here is the core base of structures...
I have used sections of molding (this style simply because we had it in the shop), as a transitional visiual from the lower rooms to the higher corridor sections. Once it's painted I think it will look fine.

I'll be adding a thin 1/8" roof to the crossroads and corridors just to have them capped off. I might run some kind of detail down the middle to make it more interesting, but not any thicker at the edges. I also beveled down all of the corners so the different widths wouldn't be as obvious. Now they all meet at the same point so it's more accepting.

Sample Holding Area One and Xenos Laboratory Sanctum
Here is one of the two dissection wings connected to an isolated end of the complex.
Here you see Sample Holding One. It has two large airlocks on either end. With the doors on the long ends, it has a different visual orientation then the other buildings. Samples can be moved quickly out of the way, or shuttled directly into the lab.

This is the Xenos Laboratory Sanctum ( WiP). The inner theatre has four “exam” tables, each is centered on the Emperor’s Word inscribed above the table. Flanking each table are walls of skulls to witness and record every detail of the “examination”. These tables will have various Star Wars droid arms all over just like the FW table. Down the center is a conveyor belt (Hirst Arts - Service Area Floor Mold #272) with drain grate on each side. More details on this later as it takes shape… as this room is a huge project on it’s own. But the fluff for this is this is where all of the “exams” take place. In the name of The Emperor, thy foe shall be known. The room is therefore designed and decorated in the manner as such.

Here is the necked-down airlock leaving the XLS. It has a single bulkhead through a choaking point, opening up to the full corridor. More on the reason for this later…

This area will have an array of control panels and monitors lining the walls.

When I was originally building the rooms for the ship table (see first post), I wanted quick uniform rooms. So I went to the local Pepsi plant and solicited them for a donation of soda trays for an “art” project. They came out with a stack of them for me! Sorting through them, I realized there were several different styles of side tabs. I picked this style to use only for the Sample Holding rooms.

Sample Holding Area Two and Surgical Dissection Theatre
Here is the second dissection wing. Again with a Sample Holding Area and dual large airlocks.

This time it leads to a large rotunda. This Surgical Dissection Theatre is made from a very expensive hi-tech automatic CD storage system that I’ve had my eye on for years. Well, my friend who has several of them, sent me a dead one as a surprise. I loved the shape and couldn’t come up with an appropriate use as it sat in my basement for a year. Then one day, I figured out how to incorporate it into this grand project. As you see here, it has been gutted. I’ll be using the cool CD carousel and file ring in a future project. The fluff for this is this is where the largest of the samples can be “examined”. Objects as large as a Carnifex can be ferried directly from the field, via a Valkyrie transporter, through the sky window.

A large array of manipulator arms will hang from the center, as this is a more automated/remotely high-risk operating theatre.

The backing from a Skeleflex container fit perfectly over the center hub of the CD tray. I rotated it so the one end would line up with the sky window. This piece has a wonderful amount of surface detail that will require little modding, and fit the space really well. Another happy accident with a random piece of plastic I’ve had for years. Another room that will be a huge project on it’s own.

Here you see the large airlock that I’ve cut out the side for.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww103/TrooperPX/Anphelion%20Base/DSC01014h.jpg
I Rotozipped a smaller hole in the opposite side for the necked-down airlock leaving the SDT. It too has a single bulkhead through a choaking point, opening up to the full sized corridor. This too will have an array of control panels and monitors lining the walls.

Stunning! I'd pay to play on that table - tactically it'd be very different from the usual, and visually it'd be gorgeous of course. I shudder to think about the storage though... does it have its own room in you home? I think wood is a great material personally.
