Ooh, big question.
More info will help us answer it. Do you know how much stuff you're getting? Is there a fixed budget, or just something like "three boxed sets", or what? Do you have friends who play as well; and/or a local store? Are you already into painting at all; maybe D&D miniatures, or just for art class?
It's usually best to start with two Troops and an HQ, the minimum stuff to play. A box of Warriors and one of Wyches will get you started with a good variety of excellent models.
Welcome to Dakka, BTW! Don't forget to read the forum rules, and check out the Painting & Modeling forum, as well as the Gallery, for inspiration. The sticky threads at the top of the P&M forum also have a lot of helpful info for a new painter.

Hello and welcome to Dakka!! i dont personally know anyone who collects Dark Elder which is such a shame! they look great, and the new gear thats being brought out for them look great, my main advice is dont do what i did when i first started out, buy almost 1000pts of gear you have no idea how to use! lol

Those all seem like excellent choices. A great variety of kits, and all those units are good.
The only alteration I might make is to swap the Talos for a Raider or two. You're going to want a lot of Raiders for mobility as you build up the army.

Hey Welcome to Dakka! For about £80 you could get an Archon, a unit of Wyches, a unit of Warriors, a unit of reavers and a raider. That would give you a playable army. If you don't have the codex I'd suggest you get that rather than the Reavers (they are the only non-compulsory unit that you'd have). Would make roughly 500 points.

I agree with ^^^ - I play with DE and started with Wyches, Warriors, Archon, Reavers and 2 Raiders. That's a good start. If you can get the Codex too that's awesome, if not then leave the jetbikes for now, as you'll need to have a look through the Codex to familiarise yourself with their skills and weapons.

about the rulebook: the big one is honestly a waste of money, the little one is exactly the same, just without the modeliing parts, even the page numbers for the rules are the same, i would just buy the little one on ebay or something, and welcome to dakka, again.
