So quite recently i got into the Warhammer IP reading books, enjoying the fluff, then i played Dawn of War 2 and decided i would start my own unit of Guardsmen. I chose IG because i like the fluff of regular humans fighting in a sea of super beings, xenos, and daemons. While i haven't started yet i am doing what i can to prepare by getting a space setup for painting, figuring out the ways i can best paint my troops, finding out techniques for painting, and generally learning more about painting an army. So in my over think the task process i decided to join a forum community(or latch on) and find out more past what the games workshop articles can tell me. Such as painting techniques, find ideas for troop design, and get advice for starting.

Welcome to DakkaDakka!

As for suggestions, personally I love commissars ( Even though they're a double edged sword). Though, honestly a theme for your army is next. What kind of Guard regiment are you running? Foot sloggers, Mech, Light infantry? Since you're just starting, I don't suggest anything too crazy until you're getting better at painting. But as of now, enjoy the game!

I was planning on doing mostly infantry few Chimeras MAYBE(low chance) a Valk but that is probably the extent of vehicles for me. I think i want to do somewhat of an Urban area unit. City defense type theme. I plan on making them as much like i run my army in DoW II as best i can which is why its going to be mostly infantry, commissar support, few heavy weapons, and a Chimera maybe 2. Not sure how you would classify it. As for the Commissars i love them; i was told by a buddy they would be a nightmare if used incorrectly so i figure they would be good to bring(plus they just look BA). To painting i decided that the change in fatigues color would simply mean a new set of directions to follow. To be honest i am actually getting in this for the moment so i can build the army, eventually build a diorama battle, and then get into the battles". I wanted to avoid armor this early on because me and art have a very poor history; and the complexity of the vehicles would not end well. I can barely draw, i am ok at painting but only if it is something i care about and want to do; like doing silly Christmas ornaments back as a kid i sucked at those but random crap i i make when i want to can outshine anything else i do.

So i really just want a urban defense squad like you might see defending a city. While i do intend on starting actual battles later on right now i am focused on setting up with my army. As for army theme again would that kind of unit work? In general would heavy amount of infantry, supported by APC's, and heavy weapons work?

Yes, I like the way it sounds as well. From what you describe, to translate it to the 40k backround, you have what's called PDF troops for Planetary Defence Force.

Thanks, one last thing. Are the metal commissars one solid unit or multi-piece. I want to know if i can better customize the ones from GW or would i need to find plastic units? the GW descriptions can be a little vague.

Solid piece, except for the hands. The book on the power fist guy ( Even though you can't take them...) the Sword on the charging, and if I remember correctly the bolter pointing one is a solid piece only.

Personally I perfer the Krieg Commissars

Now THAT is a striking model. I will need to search around for more models before i buy. I wish the ones on GW stood more like that. I want to make sure i have the ones that would look best. Also for 3 Infantry squads, a heavy weapons team, 3 Commissars, and an HQ squad would it be wise to double up on some of the paint particularly for clothing and foundations? I have this nagging feeling 12 ML won't be enough.
