Hiya!

I just started playing IG as well. Mostly, I did it so I could have an excuse to paint tanks, so I can't speak to the real 'I win everything' lists. From what I understand, though --

Meltaguns are awesome for IG troops. Also, I've been taking missile launcher HWTs, to give them a bit of versatility.

Every infantry unit should have a transport. For me, that means Chimeras. I haven't been upgrading them a great deal (though I'm modeling with most options like dozer blades and storm bolters, just so I -can- WYSIWYG them if I pay the points).

People are iffy about putting Leman Russes into squadrons, or taking them individually. (If you squad them they all have to fire at the same target; if you have three s10 shots and the first takes out a vehicle, the others are sitting there twiddling their thumbs.)

Deployment takes for-fething-ever. IN a 1000-point list I was moving about 60 troops around.

Welcome to the Imperial Guard, son.

I've been playing Guard now for about 5 years. And have won a fair amount of the time. I'm actually getting ready to start guard army number two: Vostroyans.

My advice would be first to right up a list before buying anything. And decide on a "Theme" for the army. What I mean by theme is, mechanized, or infantry or airborne or some combination of the three. One of the problems I encountered when starting my Guard was that they lacked direction. I just bought models and had no idea how to play the guard. I'm not saying you need to min-max your list and not to take any models you think are cool. One example of this are Orgryns. They are pricey and not always worth it. but I enjoy taking them simply because I like the look of the model.

Second piece of advice is to read the Tactica Imperium over at Warseer. It has alot of good info. Just remember take everything with a grain of salt. I'll rummage around and see if I can find the link in my overcrowded favorites.

My last piece of advice. Have fun.

What armies do you normally play against?

Hey janjan. I've been playing Guard for 5 years too, and there is one thing I have noticed for Guard. Go all vehicles, or no vehicles. Guard have got some of the best units around, and honestly, one of the funnest units I've ever have used, and still use, is my mech-infantry army. In my personel opinon, and I've seen many guard players use this to good effect, 3 chimeras with 3 veteran squads, all squads equipped with 3 meltas. This gives your guard mobility, extra protection, and you can take on units stronger then your guardsmen, such as marines, or even armour without leaving the safety of your chimera. Plus, veteran guard have a save of 4+ I believe. However, I'm not an expert, but that is just an idea.

Col_Torsin: Normal vets have a 5+ but for 30 points they can take a 4+. Storm Troopers have a 4+, and they're fun too. Mmm, hellguns!

Thanks for the tips guys, Im liking the sound of chimeras with vets or stormtroopers in them, supported by a large armour division. Sounds good to me!

look into vendettas, great value:

- 3 twin lniked lascannons.
- It's pretty much a flying Chimera.
- Looks really cool.
- awesome anti - tank.
- When there's a few of them, they're very hard to kill.

all for 130 points.

if you go for an air-bourne guard army, pick up a few manticores for support. max out plasma guns on your CCS and any stormtroopers you decide to pick up. i love stormies too they look great and are very effective. better value than vets because if you tried to make a vet squad the same (+ carpace armour, + a few stats, + better guns, + some more stuff) it would add up alot more...

also, i wouldn't worry about transports for platoon infantry, they can just run across the field and soak up fire as you race the transports containing the vets and your CCS across the field and deploy behind enemy lines. as your vets begin to die off try and deep strike your stormies into the fray or behind some cover. then get the manticore/vendettas to try and score some kills.

Don't worry about the 5+ saves, your wee men will be in foxholes most the time anyways. You could convert some hydras and get some vendettas. That way you can have a smaller and cheaper (£) army of veterans. Jst dont ask me for melta guns, i need them all!!!!
