Fresh-Faced New User

Hello all,
I'm not that new to 40k, I've had an imperial guard army for about two summers now, however, my problem is actually finding a place to play!
I have had little experience, and to be honest have played a lot more historical war-gaming centered around the 20th century. With this in mind, I chose the guard for some familiarity with modeling and painting a human army. The style of the army is also so for me having read the rules!
Anyway back to the problem. I live in Westchester, NY and have been itching to get some real experience with my army, (especially after taking out the time to paint the buggers)
I had found one club, but after trying to play there a few weeks in a row, found it a bit unfriendly to new comers,
The issue was really, i'd set up to play. We'd begin, and whowever i'd face had had so much more experience that they didn't have the time of day to help me out or rather allow me to memorize the rules (as 40k has quite a few) and so I would fire on a unit and before I could get together what my unit needs "to hit" for example the opponent would say "try to roll a three or more". This being a constant, I felt that at the end of every game I had learned nothing new and was in over my head just pushing troops around to be caught under an axe.
I am not saying i minded losing, I just minded the lack of learning curve/ patience from other members. When I started historical wargaming I found no such experience. The folks in that ring have always stopped to go over implications of movements etc with one another and often sit back for periods of contemplation.
After my experience with the 40K group near me, I felt the game was more:
Look at the flashiest figure I have in my army, now hurry and roll your dice so I can record it as a win or a loss and move on...
on the flip side being little passion for the strategy and recreation of "warlike" situations.
Overall I am sorry to burden you all with a long hello, and was just hoping that maybe I could find another local group by me to game with. As I mentioned before, I am open to losing quite a lot, all I am really looking for is a game in which at the end I can say "that was fun" and can remember something useful for the next.
