Hey I just recently started playing Warhammer 40k, I have bought several codexes and several models for a bunch of different armies. Now doing this is incredibly expensive and is taxing on my wallet. I was wondering if the community had any suggestions on what army (or armies) I should try out. The majority of my models are Chaos Space Marines . But havent had much luck with them on the tabletop (still going to play them forever, love their story). I like specialized armies with specialized units. I don't particularly care about size (those size matters to others). I have been thinking about Tau due to their vert specialized shoot capabilities. Then I am also thinking of Eldar thanks to their specialized Warrior Aspects. If you guys have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Warhammer 40k is not a good hobby to just buy whatever you feel at will (if you are on a tight budget that is). Any help or suggestions would be great.

Welcome to Dakka Dakka!

The answer to your question is actually rather simple since there are only two types of life forms in the year 40k:

Those who have Tyranid DNA, and those who are on the bottom of the food chain.

Nobody can make this decision for you unfortunately. None the armies you are looking at have been recently updated, so that won't really influence your decisions. I'd ask around in the tactics forums and (if you have all the codex's) try and draft up an list for each army you like the look of. If you post them in the 40k army list section, you'll get a better idea whether what you like the look of would be viable. Hopefuly this will help you make an informed decision.

Welcome to Dakka.

Like the other guys have said its a tough decision that only you can make.

To an extent I think you may have answered your own question when you said that you love csm and their fluff, to some players (myself included) fluff and loving an army is reason enough to collect and use them but as others have said an older codex can be a slight hindrance if you are a competitive player.

If you have somebody to play friendly games with there should be no problem with you proxying some models to try out different armies, its better than spending a lot of money on something you don't like.

As an eldar player my advice is that if you decide to try eldar stock up on fire dragons

All the best and have fun finding the force that suits you.

What to go for depends on what you want to achieve. If it's victory at all costs - choose carefully (you may also consider Orks - lots of attacks - lots of dice to roll - it is a numbers game you know). However if you're also going to get more into the painting and modelling side, I say go for whichever army you like the look of most, have they got cool tanks? do you like the models? etc. If you can't decide between a couple, just do both!

Welcome to Dakka.
How specialised an army is depends on your army list, whether you are going for shooting or CC or to combat armor or infantry. I recommend you look around the tactics forum. Enjoy!

Welcome to Dakka Dakka and I recommend listening to this guy. ^ Best starting army varies from person to person and how they prefer engaging their opponents. Prefering shooting at your opponent from the other side of the board? Look at Tau and the like. Prefer CC? Tyranids. Pissing off your opponent because you have exceptional rolling skills and can get all your fallen troops back up on their feet? Necrons.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.
