Hello! I've only recently gotten into the miniatures hobby for real (I've joined my FLGS' Infinity group and play Aleph). But the first mini game I was ever introduced to were GW's stuff, and I've always admired their minis...I've just been intimidated by the hurdle of getting armies going, as it doesn't seem as straightforward as 'pick up a starter army box' and play. But I've seen other players doing 40k at the shop, and I know there's some interest in getting Fantasy going, as well. (Not to mention that should I have to move following getting my degree, it would be nice to have another game on hand that seems to be played everywhere, rather than just in pockets. )

So I'm curious about recommendations-which game is better for someone who's only had experience with skirmish games, and possible suggestions on how to start armies based on the ones I'm interested in. WHFB-wise, I've always loved the Lizardmen. 40k, I rather like the look of Grey Knights, Sisters of Battle and Tyranids, although I've heard from other players that Tyranids have been nerfed fairly hard. (On the plus side, lots of them seem easy to come by on Ebay.) Any suggestions would be much welcomed. I've already got a good supply of paints/brushes/primer/glue, at any rate, so that's one thing down.

well 40k is the most popular game, so opponents are easier to find. Its also easier to play, and less tedious to paint.

That being said WHFB is more mentally stimulating, its akin to chess in some ways.

40k = beer and peanuts
WHFB = wine and cheese

so what kind of a guy are you?

Girl, actually. Easier to play and more popular both sound like points in 40k's favor. I honestly enjoy painting, though, so I'm not bothered by needing to do it.

I would go with Grey Knights. You can make an army with a low model count, and they are arguably the strongest one, if you built the correct list. Oh, and they are a ton of fun to paint. You can get them in metal or plastic, the metal being cheaper.

One last thing.

They're also each individuals. So you can give each of them their own heraldry.

Hey
Welcome to Dakka!
As Clthomps said, 40k is probably the most popular of the GW games, so would probably be easier to find a game. Once you've decided on a game just choose whatever army you like the look and feel of most, read some of the background and look at some pics to get a feel for them. It's a lot harder to keep enthusiastic about an army if you only like it because its powerful at the moment.

Hi,

Thanks for the welcomes! Glad to hear the Grey Knights would be a good starting point for a newbie-I've been admiring their kits a lot at the shop. Looking at other newbie posts, I've seen mention that to start, all one really needs figure-wise are two sets of troops and an HQ. What troop sets would be recommended-one box of daemonhunters and one box of terminators, two of one type or the other, or something completely different? I've poked at the army list forums a little, but most of the lists seem to be made for higher point armies.
