The North American Aerospace Defense Command’s popular Track Santa program is back for 2013, but the news that St. Nick will be getting fighter jet escorts isn’t going over well with everyone, with some child advocates speaking out against the move, the Boston Globe reported.

“Children associate Santa with gifts and fun and everything else that is positive about Christmas,” said Allen Kanner, a California child and family psychologist and co-founder of the Boston-based Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood. “They are associating this with the military in children’s minds. It is completely out of line,” he told The Globe.

In 2012, 22 million people were able to get “real-time” updates on Santa Claus’ trip around the globe. Millions of families watched Santa and his reindeer accomplish their mission, but this year the U.S. Air Force will be giving him support.

Adding the jets is “part of our effort to give the program more of an operational feel,” Navy Capt. Jeff A. Davis, a spokesman for NORAD, told The Globe. “It’s still cutesy since it’s for kids, but we don’t want people to lose sight of our true mission,” Capt. Davis said.

The fighter jets reportedly will protect Santa when he goes over restricted airspace around the globe. If NORAD can duplicate or improve upon last year’s statistics, that will mean at least 1.2 million mobile users and 114,000 people who call in will have a better idea of NORAD’s mission.

“I think people are quite aware of the military’s true mission,” said Amy Hagopian, a professor of public health at the University of Washington who has written extensively about military recruiting of youngsters. “If the military wants to keep its ranks stocked, it needs to appeal to children. The military knows it can’t appeal to adults to volunteer. It is like the ad industry,” she told The Globe.

The full experience for the Track Santa program, which includes games, music and movies, can be viewed at http://www.noradsanta.org/

why do they have quotes around real-time, do they mean it's on like a minute delay because the signal has to bounce from Santa's sleigh to a satellite down to NORAD that has to send the message via a series of tubes to my computer?

Seriously? I understand taking issue with adding fighter jets to the family-friendly Santa image. I'd say lighten up, but everyone has their own taste. But this? Seriously? Is she just trying to get her name in print by saying something audacious? I just have such a hard time believing that someone could actually believe this.

When I think about what would have made Santa even more awesome-r as a kid, fighter jets flying beside him would have to rank pretty high...I don't see a problem with this.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

That the military purposefully markets to young folk or that this specific move is to market to young folk?

"So, do please come along when we're promoting something new and need photos for the facebook page or to send to our regional manager, do please engage in our gaming when we're pushing something specific hard and need to get the little kiddies drifting past to want to come in an see what all the fuss is about. But otherwise, stay the feth out, you smelly, antisocial bastards, because we're scared you are going to say something that goes against our mantra of absolute devotion to the corporate motherland and we actually perceive any of you who've been gaming more than a year to be a hostile entity as you've been exposed to the internet and 'dangerous ideas'. Our true mission? I wonder what that is. She is of course inferring that it's to cause death and destruction, but that is not our true mission. It is only a part of it.

My true mission is to ensure the protection of life, and assets, through the accurate prediction of weather. My mission sometimes is directly tying into the death and destruction, but that would be more like a secondary part of it.

I thought the mission was to be a giant welfare-jobs program that brainwashes the populace into government compliance and a means to line the pockets of the military-industrial complex?

I think it's important for Santa to have proper protection.

Have you seen all those "X Saves Christmas!" specials? The poor guy needs some help

I'd honestly prefer the Christmas jets without all the Santa crap. Christmas jets would be awesome.

And we all know the aerospace industry is secular. Take that, O'Reilly.

Especially if the military advertises that some of Santa's escort pilots are female... This way, those of us parents with girls can say, "see look how cool fighter jets are? If you want to when you grow up, and try real hard, you can do that too"

Kids don't really believe in Santa. They know their parents put the gifts there. They just humor us so we don't get all sad and start humming "Sunrise, Sunset".

Besides, only dirty, rational secularists would claim that Santa puts the presents under the tree. True Christians know it was Jesus.

That might be one of the stupidest statements I've ever read.

I was hoping they wouldtell us which type of fighters were going to do the escorting. I'm curious which ones can keep up with Santa's sleigh.

Actually, it sounds as if the various branches with fighter jets will be doing ceremonial flights acting as if theyre escorting the fat man around. It's good night training and also decent publicity.

This reminds me of a strip in Viz a few years ago where the Nazis hatch a plot to for the Luftwaffe to shoot down Santa and the RAF train a lookalike to distract them. I'll have to see if I've still got the issue at home somewhere.
