Nathan Fillion had been dropping heavy hints about this in the last week or two.
Today he announced that he hopes for Firefly to return if it can find a home
It will be an animated series voiced by the original cast. (Apart from Ron Glass, may he rest in peace.) It takes place after the original series.
Joss Whedon has given his blessing.
They have two show runners (who apparently met while working on Firefly) Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters.
They have a script.
They have been given the rights permissions by Fox/Disney.
What they don't yet have is a 'home' for the show.
Nathan needs to pitch that to interested parties.
I'm hopeful but hesistant. For me, Firefly was almost perfect but that might be because it didn't live long enough to go wrong. Plus today say Hulu decide not to go forward with the Buffy reboot.
Now it can be revealed: “Firefly” is indeed coming back, sorta. Star Nathan Fillion, who had been teasing some sort of revival of the cult hit series — which lasted less than one season, and then returned as a movie — will be an animated show currently in very early stages of development, Variety has confirmed.

Animated series gets around the issue of the actors all being a lot older.
I really hope they nail it, would be fantastic to see Firefly return and also fill in all the story that got left out! Heck I hope it does so well it keeps going for a few seasons!

Amination can also help keep the budget sensible.
Sure, it’s not cheap overall. But it does give leeway for spaceborne shenanigans, and saves on sets. Got to be cheaper to draw/generate standard angle interiors to be reused again and again than build and decorate a set. A set which can be damaged and need sporadic repairs.

Yep animation itself isn't cheap and its slow; but it means no big sets and its a lot lot easier to do high fantasy and scifi stuff because you don't need to build half a studio of a spaceship for one scene; or animate a whole dinosaur or such.

I’d imagine the main costs are upfront. If you’re going digital? Once the main character designs are finalised and animated? That’s them done, and the main cost sorted.
So if you’re doing multiple episodes and hopefully seasons? You get greater value from the initial investment.
Which is also true of a tv show which requires lots and lots of custom props and costumes. Once your first season is in the can? It’s maintenance costs for everything used in that one, with comparatively lower costs going forward, as you’re only adding Some Extra Ones from there.
Big upside with animation as I see it? At least nobody is wandering off with the props and costumes. Because there’s not really anything to wander off with.

Not convinced this is something I want or need 20 years later, nor do I feel like the animation studio tasked with it is a great fit. Hope for the best, but expecting something more like the Arrested Development revival.

I'm guessing this will do about as well as the Babylon 5 animated movie. Die hards will love it and the rest of the world will forget about it on 3 months.

I’m a die-hard B5 fan and I hated that animation…
What didn't you like about it?
I thought they did a decent job, with you know, half the cast not being alive anymore.

It was the “everything can be fixed with power of love” mumbo-jumbo. To me a core part of the original series was deconstructing the mythos of “the chosen one” and relying on higher powers to solve things for you.

Only watched Serenity( the film from 2005 ) but I was impressed with it and was up for a sequel that sadly never appeared. If thats what this is then count me in.

This isn't a sequel but a prequel. Or rather its infill between the end of the First Season (which was never finished) and Serenity.

There's a little bit of a mess in the ownership for that since Fox didn't make the movie.
I remain convinced that if it had lasted to Season 3, Firefly would be despised as a show that started with such promise only to mess the bed hard. Big chunks of the premise and background have aged badly, or would have if Firefly had more impact on pop culture.
My favorite thing about firefly is it's relationship with The Tick.
All the episodes that people loved like Jaynestown and those dealing with Mal's wife were done by Ben Endlund, the guy who gave us the Tick Comic book.
If they bring him back, I'll be intested.

This is my worry. Firefly season one was excellent. But it didn’t have time to go wrong. See Battlestar Galactica , which started out brilliantly before dropping like a stone.

I thought we drilled out the bottom of the barrel years ago and have been living underground with the Fraggles.
