Saw this over at John's Plastic Legions blog, and decided to start a thread about it here.

So what are your Gaming Resolutions for 2009?

A few that I'm batting around:

  1. Stick to the budget. I'd love to be able to do this, but some of my favorite minis and ideas were impulse buys. And by that metric, that means the spending was worth it. I think I'll have to make up some budgeting rules for this.
  2. Increase the number of quality Articles and Army Profiles in the Dakka Articles system. I'm no Taskmaster, unfortunately, as that would make the Articles system feel like my job. I'd like to keep my work and fun separate.
  3. Build, and game with, an Eldar Harlequin inspired force. It's been years since I've played 40k. It would be nice to play some friendly games.
  4. Develop a better head for tactics and strategy. Not sure how I'll go about doing this. Part of it I get through the osmosis of working on articles and gaming. However, I think I need to make a more focused effort if I want to make tactical thinking effortless.
  5. Play outside of my comfort zone or at least try games that I have figs for but never played. Things I'd be interested in include: Infinity, AT-43, Warlord, Uncharted Seas. Games I don't have minis for, but would love to try include: Elfball, Descent, Okko.
  6. Write fanfic that doesn't make me roll my cynical eyes. Yes, even at stuff I write for myself.

Oh this is easy!

1. Finish painting the Savage Orcs. Not much more to go, just need to crack that whip and knuckle down to it.

2. Get the gaming board all painted and flocked. Halfway through that.

3. See on project through before embarking on another.

4. Finally master painting as I go, not buying anything else until the previous purchase(s) are done and dusted.

5. Stop sucking at Blood Bowl.

#1: Finish my Ogre/Tau Empire armies so I can semi-retire my Daemons.
#2: Stop buying things until I've assembled all that I own.
#3: Kick trash on the circuit!

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

1. Stop stressing out so much about painting. I can't enjoy my movie/other gaming/reading time if I feel I should be painting instead.

2. Play more boardgames.

3. Play at my FLGS more.

4. Finish a damn army.

1. I resolve to make around $250 so that I can finish my Eldar army...yes, it's going to be that expensive. 7 Jetbikes, a Warlock, 3 Warwalkers, a Waveserpent, and Dire Avengers. Yes, there's eBay, but my dad doesn't trust it. (Or you guys could give it to me! )

2. I'm pretty good with painting but I've fallen behind, so I want to start trying to paint again. (Eldar Guardians are really annoying to paint...)

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

I hate painting Guardians. Besides all of the above I need to get on with my Everblight army but I need a Dremell. My brother is shaming me with his ever growing collection of painted Skorne. That and get on with my ten million 40k armies. I am not concerned about the Lizards so much but I might pick up a box of Temple Guard and two or three Steggies for the bits. I have one of those metal ones I might convert it into something. Some anything. A Demon Prince maybe.

I resolve to cut back on minis spending - or at least maintain my current level - for 2009...

Of course, I've made this same resolution during many of the years I've played minis games, and have yet to actually succeed. :(

Pick two armies for 40k and fantasy from my many armies..

Dedicate time to learning, playing and painting those armies.

Sell off all the other stuff so I won't be tempted to add more to those armies.

Paint models for other people to make some extra spending cash.

Find the Bretonnians, I painted for my friend, that got misplaced/lost in the move, so I can send them to him many months late.. doh!!!

Gaming Resolutions for 2009:
1. Stick to the budget ($350 for GW), even though I plan to blow almost all of it on Apoc and Guard releases...

2. Finish building & converting all of my Guard stuff (Baneblade & Shadowsword, conversions, infantry, etc.). This is all NEW build, rather than rebuild, so it's actually possible / doable.

3. PAINT my Guard stuff! Unfortunately, I got into doing detailed "jungle" camo on all of my Guardsmen & Storms, so this is a tough job.

Owns Whole Set of Skullz Techpriests

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

1. Keep painting my Necrons.

I got through 56 Warriors, 24 Immortals, 2 Lords and 8 Tomb Spyders before I stopped. With our first event of the year being themed around using armies we've never used before - and I've never used my Necrons - I want to be able to field a 100% painted force for that series of games. Need to get two of my Monoliths up and running and get some Wraiths and a few Destoryers done.

2. Stop buying crap.

For God's sake. I have 30,000 points of Guard and Chaos, 12,000 points of Ultramarines and Tyranids and 8,000 points of Necrons (which I've never used). I have a separate Deathguard army, a whole Deathwatch army (that doesn't even have a ruleset - I did it 'cause it looks cool). I have a double GW case that houses just my Inquisitorial army. And I have my LatD army. I've got over 50 Guard tanks, including 8 Super-Heavies, and about another 30 tanks for Chaos and Marines. Add to that 350 BattleTech 'Mechs and about 150 BattleTech vehicles.

I don't need any more. I seem to just buy anything and everything... I bought 7 boxes of Scouts the week before last because I wanted to do a couple of units and I decided that I didn't like the 40 RT-era plastic Scouts I have.

And here I am thinking about a Crusading Marine army, and then there's all the Guard stuff that's about to hit. I know I want 6 Valkyries, if not 8 of them. And I know I want 8 Drop Pods. And then there's the new plastic Shadowsword kit, which I'll get 2 of so I can complete my 10-tank Super-Heavy Battalion. And then there's that Word of Blake 'Mech unit that I want to put together (a Level III, so that's 6 units of 6 'Mechs). And then IWM are archiving a bunch of stuff that I want to get, so I'll have to get them.

I can't keep doing this.

A couple of weeks back I had to stop what I was doing and buy four Sabol Divisions - yes, Divisions, the biggest one they make, and four of them - because I litterally had no where to put my BattleTech stuff. It was either crammed into a box full of bubble wrap (necessitating that I get them all out when ever I wanted to find a single 'Mech) or leave them standing on a table somewhere. I had actually stopped putting models together because I had no where to put them once I did. I had to get the Sabol cases so that I could pack them away.

My cases now almost stretches to the ceiling of my house. My 'to build' pile does the same. I have a box full of unbuilt boxes, many still in shrink wrap, and it looks like I've just received a stock shipment for my own FLGS. And I'm running out of room for Bitz.

So, again, I can't keep doing this.

So, once I've got this BattleTech order out of the way (I have to do that because if I don't do it now, every model I want off that list gets US$8 more expensive, which is WAY too much for me given the current US:OZ exchange rate) I'm just going to stop. My next purchase will be the new Baneblade kit and then that's it. I'm just going to sit on what I have until the Guard Codex comes (which is 5 months away) and then see what I can do.

I don't want to buy any more.

3. Finish building all my crap.

3 Vindicators. 4 Monoliths. 24 Paraiahs. 4 Heavy Destroyers. 2 Destroyers. Destroyer Lord. 12 Necron Warriors. 24 bases of Scarabs. 30 bases of Rippers. A Ravener. An Orc Blood Bowl team. 2 2nd Ed Ravenwing Landspeeders. 5 boxes of Scouts. 10 FW Nurgle Terminators. 2 Terminator Lords. Lord Zhufor. 5 2nd Ed metal Tyranid Warriors. 2 boxes of Gaunts. 2nd Ed Zoanthrope. 12 metal Termagaunts. 3 scratch-build Techmarines. 1.5 Imperial City Boxes. A Hive Tyrant. 3 more 'Mechs. 50 bases of BattleTech infantry.

These are just the things I can remember, off the top of my head, that I have left to build. There's more but I can't remember it. I need to get it done and done quickly, and I need to stop adding to it.

And a friend of mine is getting me a Land Raider Redeemer as a late Christmas present... so I'll have 7 Land Raiders total... well 8 if you count the RT-era one... where am I going to put it?

I need to stop buying stuff and start building stuff... seriously.

1. Finish my currently built marines. That's right I don't need to build more, I don't need to buy more, I just need to finish painting the ones I have built. Doing that alone will put a huge dent in what I have left to do.

2. Dip the models that have been waiting for dip for 8+ months. I have a box that I throw finished tyrands and cryx into that are awaiting dipping. That box is so full of dust I can't tell how many models are in it anymore.

3. No more models! Seriously when you fill 1/3 a 20x20 foot room in your attic with sci-fi, aircraft, armor, warhammer, etc... you don't need anymore. I'm not buying anymore store purchased models. If something comes along like 2nd hand deals or rare stuff I'll think about it but no more stock stuff. Right now I don't buy anything else for an army that still has unpainted figures, and I've been able to keep that up for the past 2 months so I've been doing pretty good.

4. Build more molds. I have a box that I place things in that I would like multiples of. Well that box is now full so I need to clean it out!

5. Finish my warhounds. The warhounds are looking rather pathetic right now. The last mega game I took them too someone got ahold of them and played with them so now 80% of the joints are so loose the titans can't even stand up on their own. They need some joint lock or something. Of course they need lights, sounds, and paint as well.

6. Cast more. I'm running out of honor guard heads and shoulder pads, I need to get out there and cast some more.

7. Finish cleaning off 2nd hand models. I purchased almost 2000 points of marines a few weeks ago for almost nothing and I need to clean the paint off along with a bunch of other models I have sitting around.

Hopefully I'll finish a few of these so I can move onto other projects.

Gaming Resolutions for '09

1) Make sure I introduce my friend to the hobby properly.

I've got a friend that's going to school with me and he's incredibly interested in starting on tabletop gaming and I promised him I would show him the hobby, but unlike the friends who introduced me to the hobby I'm going to encourage him to partake of all parts of the hobby (building, painting, playing) and teach him everything I know about them.

2) Round out my FoW Puskas Szosad or start an entirely new company if they don't get any love in the next 6 months.

Unfortunately starting out in Flames of War I picked the Hungarians, which seem to be the Dark Eldar of FoW. I'd really like to have some support for my army in the Late War era so I can play some of my regular opponents on an equal footing, otherwise I'm just going to have to start a brand new company from one of the major powers so I can play regularly and enjoy it.

3) Finish my Dwarf army

For the love of all things plastic I've had the thing sitting around for more than a year, I need to buckle down, buy a unit of Hammerers or Ironbreakers, and finish the army to 2,000 or 2,500 points.

4) Choose, buy, build, base and paint a 40k army

I've been in the hobby for a few years and I just haven't been able to sit down and finish an army. Every time I really get rolling on an army something new catches my eye and I sell or trade everything I have to buy this new thing that catches my eye, but no longer. I'm going to buy an army that isn't MEQ, paint and base it to the best of my ability and play with it as much as possible, perhaps even competitively.

5) Play more games!

In the past year I haven't been able to spend the time I'd wanted to on my wargaming, but this year I'm going to do more than my fair share of hobbying and have myself a grand old time playing as much as possible.

My resolutions are pretty modest compared to some here:
