The proportions vary wildly depending on the artist. When I'm drawing, I prefer the DoW2 'armor so huge, their heads look tiny' style. There is the table top style, and everything inbetween. Go with what you feel.

When I draw them, I go with the traditional "heroic" proportions, which is 9 heads tall (instead of idealistic -8 heads tall- and real -7.5 heads tall-).

I think your best bet would be Dawn of war 1 print screens form army painter. (cause you can rotate the marine).

Ive tried the DOW method but the SM helmets are quite low poly and difficult to use, i had more success with photos of the real thing. Thanks for the feedback guys.

the dow 1 space marines dont have that beefy marine look, because mainly the graphics where focused on sky view, maybe the new warhammer space marine game has some good views, as for the marine head you have made, the snout *mouth piece?* sitcs out a little bit too much giving it a warhammer 3rd edition look. hope to see more.
also i have 3dsmax and no idear where to start or how to use it do you know of any tutorials or videos that explain the verry basics of it, i find most tutorials i open expect me to make things but i dont know sooo if you can point me in the direction it would be greatly honored by myself and the imperium Automatically Appended Next Post: also use the latest gw space marine artworks to your advantage.

I agree that the "snout" is a bit off. Looks more like a beaky got his nose too close to a Thunderhawk turbine than the mouth grill on a standard marine's helmet.

3dsMax has some really great built-in tutorials in the Help menu. They're pretty extensive.
I also thought the snout of the helmet was a bit too long, as well as having relatively too thin walls.

Latest update, ive done some mods to the faceplate, bigger "mouth" changed eye shape, smoothed out the cheeks a little, done a brief mod to the helmet, pulled the brim down to a peak. Trying to make it look like its blending into the faceplate a little etc. Looking for some feedback on this one. nearly there on the face. only a bit more to do on the helmet.

heh, no offence, but the helmet does remind me of a Imperial Storm Trooper.. ( NO, not the Elite guardsmen, THE Storm Troopers.. you know, Star Wars 'n stuff..)

I just like the Storm Trooper helmets, and this 3d image reminds me of it, especially the elongated face plate with the upside down shaped V "mouth" and the dome of the helmet. How about shortening the whole "mouthpiece" in such a manner that the upper rim of the mouthpiece is just a tad outside the "eyebrow" base of the forehead?

I like the third render quite a bit, but you could definetly improve it a lot by adding more verticies and shaping.

Ok heres a render with some smoothing added, materials added. I reworked the facemask, rebuilt the helm and added the crest vent. let me know what you think guys. Im still not quite sure about it. it looks slightly wrong somehow? I cant work out why though

A lot of it is the eyes i believe. The top of the eye slits should be the edge of the top half of the helmet. Also, the grill and nose piece should meld into the top instead of ending then having the overhang there.

One thing i noticed the other day (working in a game shop i get to peruse game boxes alot) is on the DOW2 box none of the marines have the cheek ventilators. they all just have tubes running from the vox units or "ears" to the snout. they also have ridges on the facemask and down the middle of the torso armour. does anyone else find this odd? also next question, any recomendations for chapter colors?
