I`m thinking about starting necrons, but my friend is starting them too. Since there are few wargamers in my community, and there is only one gaming club, i will most likely have to play him. Is it fun to play Necrons vs Necrons. Since there aren`t a lot of list choices, our armies might be the same....please tell me if i should start collecting them or just wait.

It will get old very quickly...

Given that Necrons are reportedly one of the armies currently on the 'to do' list, I would hold off on them anyway, to see what changes in the new codex.

I would advise against it. Currently necrons are fairly boring to play, and I shudder to imagine necron vs necron battles. "My squad of warriors shoots your squad of warriors. 13 hit, 7 wound, 2 fail saves. 1 stands back up next turn. The other gets back up thanks to the resurrection orb. Your turn!"

Necrons are barely fun at all, much less against other Necrons.

Necrons aren't even fun to beat the living crap out of. I'd advice someone to start a Dark Eldar army before I advised them to play Necrons. You have Eldar in your username, try playing as them. You might have fun running circles around a bunch of slow robots.

If you must start a 3rd ed army, start Dark Eldar, for the simple reason that what you buy now will be valid for the next 13 years or so.

If you are new, I would advise against them. While I myself enjoy them, I have restrained from buying them because, while I like them, I believe wholeheartedly they need a new codex. They are also harder to play well with and win with, which might discourage you from continuing in the hobby.
If you are not new, then go right ahead, and have fun!

Please, don't. Necrons aren't much fun to play against, likened to scrubbing a pot clean. If he's starting them, have him switch as well. A Necrons mirror match will see neither of you able to kill much of anything (unless you take C'Tan), and you'll just sit there frustrated.

Ideally, one of you starts Guard, and the other Orks, for some really fun games.

That said, if he's dead-set on Necrons, play Chaos Marines and load up on the anti-MEQ stuff that kills Necrons dead...

Or a tau army with farsight and lots of battlesuits, armed with lots of plasma rifles and fusion blasters.

On a serious note. I've played against necrons, i played my mate with them roughly twice. While the actual theme of undying robots of undeath IS rather attracting, the problems is the codex is old, the play style is god awful in 5th and there are few units that can seriously do any damage (monolith/C'tan excluded)

Sorry but this isn't a very good response to the plethora of posts telling you not to play Necrons. We figured you wanted a different army anyways. Have you tried playing your Eldar vs. his Necrons? That could be fun.

When all else fails, play Orks.

I couldn't find a Necron vs Necron battle reports, but I'm interested, so instead my friend and I are going to do a Vassal game. We were doing the set up for the game (picking lists, discussing tactics since neither of us play the army, etc.) about three hours ago. He was going to go with a Monolith spam, and I was trying to avoid taking Monoliths at all costs. Later this week we are going to play the game. Now I'm already clinically insane, and after this madness he will be too. Necrons have no hitting power, especially not enough to counter other Necrons' durability. I suppose I'll post here again once we do the game on Friday.

The point is, DON'T DO IT! DON'T! Really! Today I literally spent 20 minutes at his desk screaming at GW while scanning the codex, looking for viable strategies only to be thwarted by the last line of text in the entry.

Back in my FLGS Fall League, I took my Necrons out because I thought 'hey, might as well do something original' well about into week 8, my opponent was another Necron player. Suffice to say our shooting phases were pointless, our movement phases were pointless as our destroyers were in range of one another always, our monoliths glanced each other into a James Bond drink and our lords did a whopping NADA in combat as it boiled down to a mass of warrior units brawling in the middle over the last uncontested objective...as our monoliths were each standing on the other 2. Suffice, I won due to a lucky failed LD test and me sweeping his res orb away then my monolith PW'ing gak into oblivion.

It took.....4 hours for us to get the game to end. It hurt...it hurt so much.

We didn't even really have fun.
'Oh, I shoot my Particle Whip... it scatters and kills two dudes.' 'I rolled a 5 and 6, they get back up.'
'My Heavy Destroyers shoot at the Monolith. All hit, 2 Pen, double shaken!'
'My Lord swings... and misses all but one... then fails to wound.' 'My Warriors retailate and fail to do damage.'

I mean turn 1 was fun, and turn 7 was fun, because stuff actually happened. In between? Nothing. We almost didn't even bother shooting with the Warriors because of how little effect they'd make. Sometimes they'd get a couple kills, but then the enemy Warriors just get back up.

I'll try the Destroyer list against my CSM at 1500 and see how it goes. If they can perform against something that isn't stupidly resilient, I might actually consider them worth purchasing. The problem is most of the units are basically useless in today's metagame, so you have to be as cut-throat as possible to have something par to friendly lists.
