Hi all.

At Christmas I got some vouchers and money and decided to invest in a few GW buildings.

I thought it'd be good to put up a record of the whole process here.

My purchases were the imperial sector, a basilica kit (giving me two as you get one in the sector box) and a shrine of the aquila kit.

First up all the buildings built:

Front of 1st building

side of the same.

Shrine of the aquila.

Rear of the same

Both of these buildings were based on 3mm hardboard like the stuff you get at the back of flat packed wardrobes.

I also invested in the 40k resin barrier set as I thought that they would make great ruined walls on the buildings. If you look at details on them carefully you can match them up to the correct type of building and the detail on them is quite nice as well.

Both of these buildings have been set to the side just now to allow me to continue with this one:

Ad Mech building

another view

and another

next up came the basing stage.

I used pretty much most of a 40k basing kit on this. All the slate on the inside of the building as well as some detail patches. On the outside of the buildings I used the standard modelling sand you get in the larger tubs. I wanted a difference in texture from the outside to the inside as I plan on making the outside path look like tarmac.

another view. I glued all this in place with PVA glue. When the pieces were secured I watered down more of the glue and covered over the top of all the stuff on the base to make sure it was more secure during the painting process. Once this was dry I then sprayed the whole building with GW rough coat that I had lying around.

I then sprayed the whole thing black. The building walls were then given a base coat of astronomican grey (I used a full tub for this!). This was then washed with badab black.

I also put a few brown washes on to the base at this stage.

That's where I've got up to so far. I'll post more soon.

Comments and critiques welcome.

Nice buildings, the rubble looks cool with all the resin and brass.

Hi Everybody. Thanks for the comments.

I took some photos tonight of the progress I made to the Ad Mech building on Saturday.

Here is an overhead view.

I should've turned this one around before uploading however it does show up the detail on the walls.
The basic walls are done. Drybrushing Fortress grey then rotting flesh. The light in this is a bit bright as it's artificial.
I'll take more shots at the weekend. I have started on the metallic details on the walls. I intend on weathering these.

This shows some of the detail on the base. I'm unhappy how this looks at the moment.
This has had a few brown washes and drybrushed with several colours as well.
I'm not too happy with it. Any suggestions?

This one shows the detail on the 40k barricades on the right and how good a match it is for the mechanicus wall.

Comments welcome

Awsome ruins, the rubble looks perfect but the painjob is ok, you could try darken the receses more.

you may want to think about adding rust to the buildings.

i have to agree, the buildings as you laid them out are amazing and the rubble affect that you achieved is right there as well. but, the painting job is letting it down a bit... the piles of rubble blend too much with the floor, and the ruins need rust and variation... you have got a great thing going there, just a few more touches and they will be outstanding! keep it up!

A slight update for you all.

I re-did the base. First I did a thick bestial brown wash followed by a snakebite leather drybrush.

I then followed this up with a commando khaki drybrush.

I then had a further drybrush of fortress grey around the edges of the brown areas and some patches in it.

I also gave a very slight drybrush to the outside black area.

As always let me know what you think.

I've been meaning to invest in some of GW's terrain, looks pretty good for the price. Your craftsmanship and attention to detal put my scratch built bulidings to shame.

The difference between commitment and involvement is like eggs and ham; the ckicken was "involved", the pig was "comitted".

that is a huge improvement, i still think the building's structure needs some rust or weathering... but other then that they are sweet!

I like the mixture of the different kits on that large building. Is that one painted yet?

Thanks for the comments guys.

@kukuchik - I am intending on weathering the structure. Hopefully I'll get that doen this weekend.

@jabbakahut - The other two building are still sitting like they are in pictures. I thought both the sanctum and shrine of the aquila kits were a good match as well.

Damn, the resin bases blend in seamlessly.

They are great kits and yours look excellent! I think if I ever did buy some I would just use them all for bases.

Yeah, it's amazing how it's all pretty compatible.

And it's easy to add different scratch built features.

I bought a couple packs of the imperial barricades just because they made instant destroyed buildings.

I've been looking at these kits for a while. This has given me the required impetus to go and finally get one and give it a go. Looking forward to seeing the weathering, hope you find the time.

Thanks for all the comments guys.

I have some photo's of progress over this weekend.

I will emphasise that I haven't started weathering yet - hopefully next weekend.

I concentrated this weekend on detailing.

I prefer painting in daylight and I work Mon - Fri days. Hence why progress is slow.

Anyway enough rambling here's the update:

I've added white for the lights to get a good base for colour to be added and added a brassy colour because you can't have an ad mech building without brass on it.
I've also added white for the a good base for any cabling and dials on the panels.

Elevated shot of the same.

Round the corner from the previous shots

Some of the interior detail. I've also put a reddish colour on the iron work of the structure that is exposed by the battle damage. I may give this some more orange next weekend.

An elevated view of the same.

More interior detail

And more.

As always, comments welcome.

I was trying to figure how to deal with those lights (I haven't given up on the idea of putting LED's in them), but I like how you did the white lights.

I actually thinking of giving the lights a light blue or grey wash. The white is just to get an even base coat.

Really like this blog. Its nice to see someone putting effort into showing what can be done with terrain, often the most underlooked part of the hobby.
My 2pence worth. Have you considered adding sandbags? e.g Creating sniper nests in the upper windows, defensive points for heavy weapons teams et al.
Also have a look at WWII posters and the like. GW did a pdf ages ago, think it was cityfight era (not cities of death) with loads of 40k motivational posters.
They look good hung on outer walls, street corners etc.
Anyway. Good luck with this. Subscribing.

Love the work. The buildings are great. Detail and all. I'm sure you'll add more detail if and when you want to.

Hi all. It's been nearly two weeks since my last update.

I didn't pick up the brushes last weekend however I have made progress this weekend.

Finally got the weathering done.

This building is just about finished.

It still has to be sealed unless I can think of anything else to do on it.

As always comments welcome.
