Also 40k doesn't have Commericals on the tv so they don't appeal to everyone.

This is an expensive hobby....
Then you have the whole GRIMDARK theme going on.
Then you have the fact that the imperium is roughly based christainity from the dark ages. You saw how a lot of people cried out in outrage over harry potter because it promoted "witchcraft". They are going to be screaming about 40k. Then GW is gonna have that knee jerk reaction and make 40k more rated "G"....

Star Wars was made to be popular. Hence, it was made as a movie.
W40K was made by a RPG mini company. This company supplied a small group of people and wanted to branch out a bit, but still keep the original audiance. Hence, it was made as a game with minis and dice. (Well, WFB came first, but it's the same basic principle)
Come to think of it, that's what is happening with the movie. GW is trying to branch out but still retain the original audiance. If "Ultramarines" is a hit among people that don't play the tabletop game then GW might branch out a little more... 40K in theaters, anyone?

GENTLEMEN I have a solution to the whole "40K is too GRIMDARK" problem
Ciaphas Cain: Hero of the Imperium: THE MOVIE
Think about it, that book remained true to the fluff of 40K while managing to be both upbeat and humorous. Pit them against an Ork WAAAAAGH! and boom: instant hilarity in addition to epic Guard vs Ork horde action. It even has HOT CHICKS (Amberly and Col Kasteen) So many great characters too, Cain (of course) JURGEN, Amberly Vail, Col Kasteen, the list goes on.
What say you?

And I bet you were yelling "WAAAAAAAGH!" when your Avatar picture was taken
But yea, a Cain Movie would be a great Theatrical release IMO. It's got action, comedy, and romance. There're three genres that would be covered, and thus three different crowds that the movie would appeal to. Add all the fans that would see it just because it's 40K, and it starts to look like a promising prospect, if only that at the time.

Sure was. Reserve Regiment, but it was a toss up between moving to Edmonton, Calgary, or Vancouver if I wanted to go full-time. And I hate all three of those cities (No offense to the poor folks that're stuck in them ). 50% of the shows on Discovery Channel up here are about the Canadian Forces, and the Airforce shows are hilarious. I swear, part of the criteria for joining the RCAF is that you have to have previous experience as a stand-up comedian
And like ZTCC said, no Hollywood. Ever. The amount of suck in a Hollywood-made 40K film would likely result in an explosion akin to Exterminatus.

To sum it up:
Star Wars has movies and lots of merchandise like action figures, books, lunch boxes, and video games.
40k has books (less than star wars), miniatures (very expensive), and only a few video games.
Hopefully the movie will get it more out in the open.

I didn't realise that a new game was coming out....hopefully it won't be a steaming pile of turd like 'fire-warrior'. Dawn of war saved the 40k games genre. But I have to agree, hollywood would thin 40k movies down so much it would become something else entirely. But how did Peter Jackson manage to keep so much flavour in LOTR? I know films can't always follow the book to the letter, but he managed to still make three great films from three great books. Why would 40k films not get the same treatment?

I heavily agree with the people who said Hollywood needs to stay the hell away from 40K. They would no doubt transform it into a politically-correct, sex-filled piece of crap about how the evil evil human Imperium is racist against aliens blah blah blah. Independent studios are where its at (District 9 amirite) unless of course that independent studio involves *shudder* UWE BOLL

Movies come out with mass advertisment and localization for other languages; that's exactly what hobby games have not.
The real question though is why would you want Warhammer to be such a mass phenomen as Star Wars?
Im glad for the situation here where Warhammer has basically a subcultural following. People who are interested in science fiction will stumble upon 40K sooner or later, people who arent will keep on living with Hollywood block busters such as SW and LOTR. Mass following isn't good for games, just look on Magic the Gathering - you have to spend A LOT of money for competative play every 2 years, new sets suffer from power-creep and the fluff itself got reset for a more generic anime/heroic theme. And not to forget, the developer (WOTC) sold itself to Hasbro.
GW is quite commercial already and after my experience with Magic (which I played for 15 years and stopped last year) Im glad for every day the hobby stays "as it is".
Just my two cents

There is portential, if it was able to keep with the style of grimdark that is 40k. But hollywood does not approve of unhappiness. Unless someone like peter jackson touches it, it will probably fail.
Best case scenario, it would have to be the most light-hearted, lightly bloody story ever set in the world of 40k (lightly bloody being gruesome and gory by normal movie standards).
It certainly won't end in, "everyone dies" like most 40k stories, but oh well.
Movies like district 9 and starship troopers show me that a certain amount of grit and grissle is acceptable by "normal" standards, and as such, can make at least some money.

GW has a great background...but not much of a story. Seriously, what in the world could you do with 2 hours of time that would appeal to a MASS audience, unfamiliar that 40k even exists? You could call it a 40k movie if you wanted, but it would probably boil down to generic space opera with square-jawed, chiseled men yelling "For the Emperor!"
Budget for a movie like this would have to be substantial to even *try* to make it look good. Lots of CGI or else you have a movie where it looks like a bunch of juicers who don't know how to dress themselves.
All of this is assuming that GW doesn't put a premium on using its IP, and we know the likelyhood of that, amiright?

If you're having trouble understanding 40k's lack of mainstream appeal then you might
also have trouble understanding why GW would buy the license to develop the Lord of
the Rings material.
Also, I don't think very much of what's appealing about 40k is the individual characters
of the game world. The appeal of the game comes from people being drawn to the
character of the armies, which is a vastly different thing. Until they started making
books about the material, I doubt you could write specific, personal descriptions of
the heroes of mankind and chaos and the Eldar. They are archetypes. We know about
ther gear, their special powers, and their broad motivations. The only flaws we can
point out are the sweeping tragic ones and not the minor ones that make characters
real.
Anyway...

Damn straight! But yeah it would have to be heavy on the CGI, and the plot line would have to be soli for it to catch on. But I hope there is an opening crawl or a 2 minute story from a dreadnought explaining the story so everyone wont be shouting " WTF is this !?!
