Alright, first of all: Hello, this is my first post.

Okay, so I've been brain storming like crazy for a really neat Space Marine army that would be a conversion heavy, 1500pt, hit team army that could also perform decent on the field. The idea is that they are a special chapter used by the Emperor to remove high priority targets. I've used DakkaDakka many times for ideas, but this time I was really stumped. I'll give a quick overview of some ideas I had; many of which I removed.

1: No vehicles except Drop Pods or Speeders. Maybe a converted Dread.
2: I had only Scouts for Troops, but I don't think this will be the best for the army.
3. I thought that a lot of Scouts with Snipers and Vanguard Vets with Lightning Claws.
4. I had a Vanguard Vet crew of 10 all with single Lightning Claws and Jump Packs which would be an awesome ~40 power weapon attacks on the charge with the wound reroll, IIRC. But they also cost about 500+ points and that made my army a bit of a one trick pony.
5: I think that I want a Black and White color scheme, but I am open to ideas.
6. I don't want a shooty army. I've got a Puretide themed Tau army for that (and they are currently 5-0-5, so they seem to be working)
7. Cool conversion ideas are greatly desired. I've got a million ideas rolling around in my head, but I've only got so much time and money. I can do SMALL green stuff work. I'm still getting used to it.

Thanks for your time. You won't regret it if we get the ball rolling on this. Once we have some ideas, I'll buy the parts and bitz and start putting up some WIP pics.

Thanks again all,
-Luther

So... something like this?

No, I thought about Grey Knights, but I wanted something more unique and something that would stand out more on the battlefield. Plus, Grey Knights are god-awful ugly.

EDIT: Plus I want to kill something other than demons.

Possibly something like death watch kill teams but modified. Are you looking to use current rules or make up some of your own?

So pretty much you are looking for an army that acts as a assasination team right?

Using BA would work as lightning fast kill team. They dont have alot of shooty and are CC heavy. You could go wolves as you can mix termis and power armor together and there devestators are pretty nasty. You can run white scars from the SM codex if you want something faster then a normal army and you still get speeders, devis, and the rest of SM goodies

Right. Assassins is right, but I want them to be Marines at heart. I will be using current rules, but counts-as is not a problem.

Ok, I would say use Shrike as your HQ. He gives everyone with combat tactics fleet instead. This allows your army to move fast. Also i would say use tellion. Hes pretty nasty to add in to your scouts. Then run scouts with sniper rifles. And you can run shrike with a squad and they all get infiltrate. Bit more of a mobile army plus you still get speeders.

Another idea also is to you use pedro cause then your sternguards become scoring units. And sternguards have the special ammo that makes them efficient hunters.

Ok. I like that. I had Shrike in the original army list, but not Tellion. Do you think I should go with a 10 man Vanguard Vet team like I talked about in my first post and then add a 5 man Sternguard in Drop Pod with Deathwind?

Another question for anyone: Can a all Scout troop selection hold up in a game or do I need my Tacticals? I personally think that I might need my 3+ save, but I can save points with the Scouts as well as being able to Infilltrate and Scout.

I dont know about the all scout troop choice. I threw together a 1500pts list not sure how it would work (marines arent my main army). I think the 10 man vanguard takes up too many points for a 1500 list.

Shrike

2x 5 man sternguard squads w/ sargeant with PW

Rifleman dread (2x TL autocannons)

5 man scout squad w/ 4 sniper rifles, camo cloaks and telion
5 man scout squad w/ 3 sniper rifles, Heavy bolter, and camo cloaks and sargeant with sniper rifle and PW

3 vehicle land speeder squad w/ 1 assault cannon and 2 heavy bolters

5 man vanguard sqaud all with plasma pistols

5 man devastator squad with 2 lascaonnons and 2 missle launchers

1502

You get firepower, range, and speed (cause all the guys get fleet) I figured with the vanguard you can heroic intervention them next to the guy you want to kill and fill his face with plasma. You could drop a sternguard squad or the vanguard squad and add in a assault squad to run with shrike so he wasnt lonely. Since shrike cant heroic intervention so running him with the vanguard in reserve wouldnt be as effective.

well thats my $.02. Feel free to correct me on some points as i said earlier marines arent my main army

I think an all scout army could work if played well, you just need to be more clever than your opponent. This includes the placing of objectives in objective games, using reserves/outflank wisely, exploiting cover and using everything else in your army as targets to make your scouts disappear in the target priority list of your opponent. Tricky, but probably well rewarding if you pull it off!

As for Vangard, I think you should keep the model count low (5-6), with only a couple upgrades here and there. Attach Shrike to infiltrate and get in CC in the first turn if you have first turn. Keep'em in your deployment zone or DS if you get second turn.

5 man Sternguard unit can be a real treat.... or just die without ever doing anything good. But I like them, so I would keep them if I were you. (give them 5 combi-meltas for thank hunting, 5 combi-plasmas for MC/MEQ hunting)

Don't forget you can combat squad scout units so don't hesitate to buy full squads and split them if needed. Like you said, you won't be able to rely on 3+ saves to win the day, but you should have more bodies than in regular SM armies. Here you go, my two cents good luck!

Praise the emperor, bless your weapon and pass the ammo!

Ok, I don't have a codex with me for a little while so I have no idea if the points are close, but I think my list will look something along the lines of:

Shrike

5 Sternguard w/2-3 combi-meltas
5-6 Vanguard (Shrike goes with them) with 3-5 Lightning Claws, Melta Bombs, Plasma and JPs.

10 Scouts w/ Camo Cloaks (Haven't decided on a mix of weapons yet)
10 Scouts w/Camo Cloaks and Tellion (Weapons?)
5 Scouts w/Long range weapons (i.e H.Bolter and Snipers)

2 Land Speeders (Squad) w/H. Bolters
1 Land Speeder Storm

Extra Points Ideas (if I even have extra points):

Assault Squad
Drop Pod for the Sternguard
Dread
Something good at smashing up infantry.

Ok, so first modeling question:

I was thinking that Necron Warrior heads would look like cool helmets for the scouts and give them a macabre look. Yes? No? Maybe?

Also, I was thinking that a stealth fighter look to the Land Speeders would be pretty cool. Any existing models of GW that you guys think might help fit that or should I get the plastic card out?

Last question for now: Do you think that a heavy jungle style basing will just make the army look dis-organized or too dark on the table? I always wanted to do a jungle style basing, but I'm not sure if this is the army to do it.

Thanks again.

Necron warrior heads would look cool but i think they are too small and long (not 100%). Also check out pig iron they have some bad ass looking heads for scouts. A stealth fighter look would be awesome. Id say either plasicard it or find a small scale model that would work. The heavy jungle would work for the scouts but id say make it not as dense on the power armored squads

Yours numbers come out to be about 1300 and that includes some but not all weapon options. I would run telion in the 5 man sniper scout squad since his bolter is a heavy 2 weapon.

Ack! You're 100% right about Tellion. On my notes I even had him in the 5 man. Thanks for running those numbers.

I was thinking punisher skull logos for the army. White accents with mostly Black army. And strong turquoise as a spot color. College is picking up heavy today so I won't be able to do a lot of research, but I'll try to find a couple ideas for the speeders.

I also will be making a custom Shrike because I feel the GW one is not quite what I want. Plus its metal.

As for Van and Stern guard I think I will be using the Dark Angel torsos for that. I like the tunic look.

Anyone have some fun conversion ideas they think would look cool and right in this army?

Yeah a punisher theme would look awesome. But then i would go with more of a urban theme base with that, its your choice.

The DA torsos for the sternguard would look nice. As for the vanguard im not to sure tunics+jump packs would look good. The BA sanguinary guard models would be sexy. For shrike A custom set of claws is a must. If you look in my gallery I have a pic of a assault sargeant with a pair of LCs that would be perfect. I used a power fist cut down to the last knuckle and then shaved hormagaunt talons down to make it fit. Genestealer talons would work also and not be as long.

As for jumpacks to be unique, something simple and probably cheap would be to base it off of the mech suits that are used in the appleseed movies. The bar looking thing that is on the back of the suits.

Your Sternguards will need the drop pods to get to their target, otherwise they'll never make it. Also, you need Power Fist on the scout sergeant, maybe combi-flamer/melta too.

Your LS should have multimeltas for Tank Hunting (Scout forces lacks Tank Hunting a lot.) As for the stealth look, check out Forgeworld Tempest pattern Land Speeder, maybe that is what you are looking for.

Lastly, I think a dreadnought (or Iron Clad) in a Drop pod could be useful. This way you can choose between him or the Sternguards in the first turn and it gives you a solid CC threat to throw at your opponent.

Praise the emperor, bless your weapon and pass the ammo!

This sounds like a really cool idea. I like the sound of the matte black/punisher sorta theme. As far as basing goes, I'd say get as creative as you can, and go whole hog, whether you go for jungle or for urban. Have your snipers actually hiding, and your scouts snooping around plants or rubble or whatever...so long as you're not modelling for advantage that much. That's just not kosher.

I don't really see a problem with the tunic/jump pack combination, but it might be worth doing the bottom bit with green stuff so you can model it as flapping around in the wind.

Sweet. Good advice and glad you guys like the Punisher theme. I like the Urban idea too. Tile or Corrugated Steel.

I'm gonna think on the BA San. guard. That might look pretty sick, especially in black and white.

Adding the Drop Pod. Got any ideas on how to make that 'stealthy' or is a block of steel falling out of the sky stealthy enough?

EDIT: How are Forgeworld used in tournaments? Does GW care if you use Forge world? Converted Forgeworld?

A drop pod is about as stealthy as an aircraft carrier. Not at all. But paint it black and call it good.

Forgeworld and converted forgeworld models are usable in tourneys as long as stuff is still WYSISYG but as for the specific rules that FW puts out for their stuff I don't think they are allowed but check the rules for the individual tourney as they may allow some stuff.

Perhaps I should look for a neat drop-pod counts-as. Or a cool dread conversion. Vehicles are a great way to add theme to an army, imo

Ok, so those are the major concepts for the land speeders. I'll start with a Tempest and then I want to modify the wing structure and weapons armament. Then I want to add a turret to the top of the speeder for the melta. This would be where Mr. Brosnan comes in. That is the kind of look I want to have for the turrent: Open, but not too open and complementing the sharp lines of the rest of the vehicle. Note that the turrent won't look like that, but have that concept in mind.

This is the first color scheme idea I have for the army. Note that I know the turquoise is not all the same color. It will be in the finished product. Right now, I think the model may be too dark, but then again they are assassins and bright colors wouldn't really work. I think adding weathering affects in the form of dirt and power armour damage might help brighten the models up. As of right now, I think I am going with a urban basing scheme

I like this punisher skull because it looks sloppy. However, I will make this white before making it into a transfer. Only a few models will have it (scouts don't care the chapter symbol) and along with the vehicles I think it will be enough for people to get the theme.

Chapter name ideas:
Ghost Legion
Specter Legion
The Ghost Host
The Emperor's Will
The Ghosts of (Insert world here)
Many other similar names....

I really want to find a better way to do the drop instead of a block of steel falling out of the sky. Maybe take a normal drop pod and slim it up a little bit and add some weird looking gizmos to make it look stealthy. I really would like to find a more clever alternative. Maybe a teleporter of sorts.

As for the dreadnought; I'm also still looking for cool conversion ideas. I would almost like something that I can add into the fluff of the army. Tons of metal clomping around the battlefield is hardly stealthy. However I do like the concept for this conversion:

And finally is the ideas for the Yet-To-Be-Named Captain of this army:
I want his head on a running, JP, lightning claw armed, space marine commander. I'm still looking for a good torso.

Ok. Thats all I got for the time being. Its Sunday so I'll be surfing the net a little bit today, looking for ideas.

-Luther

+++++Chapter #632 aka Ghost Legion. Created 998.M41. This new Chapter was created out of necessity to handle enemy commanders of the Imperium. First created by the combined think tank of Chapter Master Calgar [see file#3456v.45] and various members of the Inquisition [see file #567.34] as well as recommended members of Deathwatch [see file # 100v4] Ghost Legion is tasked with the location and elimination of high priority targets of the Imperium. Due to the nature of their work, these warriors work in considerably smaller units than normal Space Marine Units [Doctrine #43]. Typical chapter organization is reorganized in order to fit the unique circumstances these units work under. No chapter master is allowed in the Ghost Legion and all units operate independent of the others. Further more, there are only 3 Units. Each of these units are given a large armory funded by the Inquisition. Vehicles are largely removed from the Units as they are not useful for most environments Ghost Legion operates in.

Close, unconfirmed ties to the Officio Assassinorum have led to a unique look and operation of the Ghost Legion. It is also not uncommon for Ghost Legion to have Librarians in the Task Forces.

The men of Ghost Legion are unable to be traced to any homeworld know the Imperium. Questions from the Mordian High Counsel leading into an investigation led them into the tiny Gulidine System [see diagram #2]. It was on the dual orbit planets Huntro and Spicidine that Mordian High Counsel met with Agents of the Ordo Hereticus. Investigation stopped immediately. However, 4 years later Sr. Ermiot Lyric [see file#6790v34] transfered a file to an Imperial Cruiser [Cruiser Name: The Howl of the Manta; see file #456.32] detailing information on the Ghost Legion. Within moments the Cruiser was engaged by unknown forces. Cruiser sent out a distress signal and Astropath began file uplink to Holy Terra. This signal was largely jammed and only 42.37% of the file was uplinked. Cruiser was destroyed and all hands killed. Suspected Chaos involvement, although no taint was found. Details for the uplink can be found in file #4567.34.

Although heavy damaged several items remained undamaged. First is the fact, that it appears Ghost Legion is a synthetic force and is grown from unknown sources. This has led to three separate investigations all of which where stopped for unknown reasons.

Second is that all of Ghost Legions actions have been misreported to Imperium officials. However, all actions were damaged in the uplink except for Task Force 3 lead by Captain Cyrus Thanatos.[see file#9832.v56]

BACK FROM THE DEAD!!!

Sorry if this counts as a Necro.

So, moving on with all the concepts here. I have already started construction on my Sternguard and currently have 3 almost done with construction. That leaves two more to do. I am currently in need of some meltas for the construction of my combi-meltas, so that is the main reason for the hold up with those pieces. I went with Maximus Helmets for Stern and Vanguard(http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Space_Marines/Space_Marine-Infantry-Accessories/MK-IV-MAXIMUS-ARMOUR.html). All the models in the army are going to have a concrete wall/rubble/urban ruin basing scheme. So far I like the way it looks on the Stern and Scouts.

Also, finished up a group of 5 scouts (4 sniper and 1 missile), putting Pig Iron Heavy Infantry Visored heads on them and moving some of them around to more interesting poses. Which brings me to my next problem. Has anyone ever tried to use the sniper cloaked bodies of the scouts with bolters being used instead of sniper rifles? I want everyone to have matching style camo cloaks and then best idea I can come up with is to slice up the arms from normal bolter scouts and then place them on the sniper scout bodies. Think it could work?

Starting to try and come up with a neat Telion custom piece. I mean, I could just by the normal one and chop of his head, but what fun would that be? Right now I am thinking to base him off a normal scout sniper, but with a better helmet and custom weapon, but I am worried that he will get lost in the sea of scouts. Ideas?

Librarian is currently 30% done with construction and still needs a lot of GS and custom work. And a freaking weapon. Those are in the mail right now.

Things that are currently being worked on:
Scout Group #1 (3 Snipers, 1 Missile, 1 Telion)
Scout Group #2 (4 Snipers, 1 H. Bolter, 5 Bolters)
Librarian
5 Sternguard (3 with Combi-Melta)

Color Scheme has been slightly redone and is still up in the air as I have not done any models with it yet:

Note that the color has changed from Black to Necron Abyss.

I have no pictures for you guys right now as I am away from my models for some time. I will create a new thread for the actual creation of the army, but for now I thought it best to keep it in this thread. Until I am back home(2 weekends from now) no pictures. Sorryz. However, I am still buying parts like a mad man and starting to brain storm for my Captain and he crew of Vanguard. I want to do custom claws for the Captain, but I am really not a fan of the Edward Scissor-Hands/Freddie look. I want something more claw like and less....spiky. Also on the way in the mail: Two Land Speeder Tempests, One Speeder Storm, and many more scouts. And more Pig Iron heads.

Also, name change. We are no longer the Knights Who Say Ni, or the Ghost Legion. We are now....'The Magistrate'. Like it? Hate it? Love to hear some opinions on it.

Here is some quick little combat fluff:
Spoiler:
Chazmog da ‘Eadeta stomped through the rubble of downed buildings toward the nearest group of Nobz he could lay eyes on. He was mad. He had a reason to be. One of these numbskulls had failed the attack on the humies. It was so simple. All they had to do was run and shoot, something even the dumbest Ork could manage.
‘Oi!’ Chazmog bellowed, which, of course, was the universal word for a head smashing. The Nobz nearby looked up and would have certainly been afraid if they weren’t so stupid. Chazmog quickened his pace and stomped up to the crew of Nobz. Although they were all massive by Ork standard Chazmog towered over them all. He was the biggest. Leader of a 2 million Ork Waaagh. The humies didn’t even have close to enough men to stop him. They even had the Supa’ Humies to help, but power klaws saw to it that they were of little problem.
As Chazmog opened his maw to scream at the nearest Nob his face was suddenly showered with a warm liquid. And it tasted good. Slightly confused Chazmog glanced around. One of the Nobz had no head. Blood everywhere. That was odd. Suddenly Chazmog’s head snapped back and it felt as though he had been struck in the head by a Trukk. Damn that hurt. He was bleeding. Odd. Suddenly the silhouettes of the ruined buildings lit up with bolter fire and the ground around Chazmog and the Nobz began to explode as bolter rounds slammed into the concrete. Several Nobz went down instantly as the massive Heavy Bolter rounds hit home. Chazmog turned and bellowed for the nearest group of boyz to get in on the fight. Just as he turned to face his hidden assailants he was hit again, this time in the arm. Anger shot into Chazmog’s veins and he bellowed his challenge as he sprinted for the nearest ruin. As he was nearly inside the doorway suddenly the ground under Chazmog lifted him into the air with a massive explosion of rapid arms fire. As he was flung through the air he saw the sky vehicles the Supa’ Humies used. Land Speaders or something like that if he recalled correctly. Chazmog crashed down onto a slab of concrete and his great bulk smashed completely through. Dizzy Chazmog struggled to his feet. Or rather his foot. One was gone. Cut clean off by the assault cannon. Unfazed, Chazmog limped his way back toward the fray. The sky was filled with the vehicles. They spit fire down into Chazmog’s carefully planned defenses and supply crates. Explosions followed in their wake.
Chazmog neared the closest ruin and as he did he spotted a humie crouched over a rubble pile next to an I-beam. Gleefully roaring Chazmog closed in on the humie. Suddenly his ears were filled with a roaring sound of engines and a Supa’ Humie landed in front of Chazmog wielding a bloodied chainsword. Chazmog jabbed out at the Supa Humie with his power klaw, but the man ducked under the attack. The Supa’ Humie then slashed deep into Chazmog’s arm. Bellowing in anger, Chazmog swung with his other hand and smashed into the side of the humie with a massive hook, sending the Supa’ Humie flying. Another humie landed next to Chazmog. This one was bigger. And had long blades protruding from his hands. Chazmog swung again, and the humie spun under the swing while slashing deeply into Chazmog’s stomach. As Chazmog bent over from the surprise of the attack, the humie slipped back to the outside of Chazmog’s guard and brought a bladed hand crashing through Chazmog’s spinal column and severed his neck.

Captain Cyrus glanced down at the now headless Waaagh Boss. He had been hard to kill, but now that he was dead hopefully the Waaagh would disband and countless human lives will have been saved. It was a shame no would know of his valor. But that was the payment for being part of The Magistrate.

Thanks for reading, and even more thanks if you post some C&C.

Looks nice! And I think it's alright to necro a thread if you're the one that created it (not sure thought).

I would go for...

A Scout Sniper Squad + ML plus counts as Telion included.
A Scout Squad with CC + LLS
A Sternguard squad with PC and Heavy Flamer (+Combi weapons!!)
A Rifleman Dread (2 x Twin Auto Cannon!)
Plus a Librarian with GOI or something where you can warp around the board.

I think you have built the Army I would have gone for, maybe throw in 2-3 Land Speeders for the shock attack element.

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!

Sweet. My army fits pretty close to what you said.

Quick question: I know all of the alphabet soup you post but LLS. What is that? (Typo maybe? LSS?)

How good are scouts with CC in combat? Can they really hold up?

I also, won't be adding a Rifleman Dread purely because my army is already a lot more shooting than I want it to be. I was originally going with a BA army list, but I wanted my LSS's. Also not sure about the PC. With so few hard fitting units I don't know if I want to leave it up to a .

I've got the Land Speeders coming through the mail right now and I am having a friend get my SM codex and mail it to me so I can tailor the army list up to the fine details.

Anyone have ideas for the Captain?

Why not use a Shrike counts as, the Raven guard fluff is a very close match for your style of army I think. A leader that will get his men in and out quickly I'm thinking.
