yeah,
Yeah,

++++++++++++

2016 Edit:
S6 engineering closed sad face
But these canals are now available from http://www.honeybeeworks.co.uk/
Huzzah! And the price is still amazing!

++++++++++++

I noticed s6 Engineering prototype thread in the dakka news and rumours page at the start of the month.
I loved their products, I ordered two sets of canals and two of the new style vehicle bridges and I recieved them today, only 6days later!
I had three broken bits, but nothing major, all easily fixed, and this is probabily more to do with royal mail.

That's alot of acrylic bits!

This is the new style bridge... it makes much more sense that the old steep ramped one.

Every single piece has a protective plastic that needs pulling off... this took about 90mins

the sides are held in place by a simple tab locking system

there are alot of tabs! these drive you a little mad pulling the backing plastic off!

Well that's all I got done today, I hope to find acrylic glue and and primer so that i can get going properly tomorrow.
I can't wait to take my dremel and paints to these...

s6 Canals... It's got what 40k craves!

I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on with these. Any plans for putting some designs under the "water" to give the illusion of depth or anything?

Hope you like them.

You can use superglue - it takes longer to bond acrylic than styrene so you need to leave it alone longer than you might expect.

Which parts were damaged?

indeed, i plan to go whole hog and use powders and everything... but they are quite basic shapes so i don't expect this to take more than a evening or two to paint.
SilverMK2 wrote:Any plans for putting some designs under the "water" to give the illusion of depth or anything?
I'm planning to print out some custom canal art for the underside... I'm still playing with some ideas in my head.

Scott-S6 wrote:Hope you like them. You can use superglue - it takes longer to bond acrylic than styrene so you need to leave it alone longer than you might expect.
I'm very happy with them, I've been playing around with them and my only problem so far is sometimes my setups means that the last piece overlaps the table edge... I think I may cut some of the straights to make shorter lengths to offer more freedom.
Also angles are an idea so the canal can be placed diagonally to the board too.

I read the working with acrylic bit on your website, I'll pick up some Plastikote tomorrow, I think after that I'll be using rough coat to texture it up a bit. I also plan to dremel a bit to to tarnish the clean surfaces.

Scott-S6 wrote:Which parts were damaged?
The Jiffy bag you packed the bits in should have protected them and is reflected by your low postage. I have no issue with a couple of damaged bits. Two of the corner edges and one of the foot bridge side pieces suffered clean snaps.
But these are easily fixed and won't be visable once they are glued together and won't affect the terrain at all.

Thanx for the quick delivery.

The light and dark grey concrete pictures? Yep - I can see them on your site.

Edit: Do you have the size of the clear canal piece? I will have a go at making something up for you.

Sounds cool to me

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Don't know if this is anything like you want, but I fired up PS for a few minutes and used some of my many, many brush packs to flesh out your basic design (also added directional lighting effects).

The designs are the same size as the ones on your website, so I assume they are the correct size to fit the canals if you print them off "full size".

yeah,
Spulk Tile tests.. these are the successful looking tiles... I don't think they have a strong canal feel to them.

I do like the spot light effects though.
I also like the fan that now looks like a drain...

Those Space Hulk tiles look especially nice!

yeah,
but only the top one really look like they are underwater.

I think the photoshop project will come up with good results that can be used on lots of canal, so that all the parts match but without repetitions...
plus we won't have used GW IP and can make them available for others.

Although I'm going to be adding a boltgun or two down there later!
and maybe a licence plate, a bicycle and a sainsburys trolly.

Sure, if you give me the dimensions I can knock out a few different designs for you.

Might even do a few "special interest" ones with shopping carts and things in

yeah,
The Plan has changed some what!
Today while out doing so fault finding I spotted a dirty concrete drain with some stale old water in it.
Perfect!

I took many photos and from those got these eight sections.
I then used photoshop to clone bits in and out of each photo so that they all colour matched and that the ends would line up a little better.

SilverMK2: dude if your willing to I've uploaded these to the same folder as the others.
If you could add in the cloudy effect and some directional lighting, I think a dark fade at the top and a light fade at the bottom will make these look the bomb.
While I don't think the cracks will work on these you could give it a go?

I'm very confident these will look great under the green plastic.
Next I need to mash these images up to make the bends...

Wow that's some great source material.

I'd venture to suggest, though, that in addition to the effects you already listed, a slight ripple (nothing OTT or you can't see the details) might also help give it a "submerged" feel.

Just my 2 cents. I've been quite interested to see how this will turn out.

Ooh! This looks like a cool blog. It's also great because you're supporting s6engineering too. I'm liking that you're putting images under the green plastic parts - personally I think that an industrial/techno look would suit them best, rather than a rusty/neglected one. But I'll hold my breath on that opinion until they're put to the test - can't wait to see more!

Looks great - can't wait to play on it.

In fact, when i get a second, I'll build one of these to go on it - no city canal is complete without one.

No, wait, I've got some spare horses - I'll do some of those too!

EDIT - They can have guns on them, though

Are the full size pipe pictures on your site? Also, if you can give me the dimensions of the canal I can put the correct size on the images so they will print off accurately without having any waste.

Edit: Just read back through the S6 thread and I think they are 10x28cm. Will sort out some long straight designs when I get home. Will also see if I can do the corner sections if you give me the dimensions.
