The Wrath of Morgrim "Da Lion" Grimork - Part II - Orks vs Eldar & Tau - 1200pts

Part I is over here if you missed it

INTRODUCTION
"Tell us when da Boss 'ad annuvver go!" the Ork youths chanted. "Or right, Or right!" Ozmodii chuckled. "Fair enuf! Well, az ya know from da last story, whilst try'n ta raise morale, Morgrim fell inta a tricksy panzee an' fishboyz trap. 'E made a valiant effort ta salvage da situation, but woz caught off guard by da panzee dread - no doubt due ta shield'n da boyz earlia - an da Dark Angelz 'ad ta retreat. Temporarily ov course! Once da ringin' in 'is 'ead 'ad stopped, Morgrim began makin' taktikal planz ta teach da panzees an' fishboyz a lesson. Da Rav'nwing woz dispatched ta scout out da panzee an' fishboyz positions - an' when dey discovered da location ov sum pointz ov int'rest to dem, Morgrim decided reliev'n dem ov dem wud be suitable retribution - az well az givin' dem a gud kickin' in da process!"

MISSION: Capture & Control
DEPLOYMENT: Pitched Battle

PRELUDE

Eldar & Tau deployed. Fire Warriors already hold an objective. You can see the second objective on the Ork side, all alone.

The remaining Tau deployment and the Ork deployment. The Deffkoptas are on the edge of the 6' x 4' table (the red range ruler in the pic)

"Da panzees an' fishboyz 'ad already secured da first point ov int'rest. Morgrim's taktiks woz ta 'it 'em on da far right flank an' drive down tawards da first point ov int'rest - kickin' da panzees an' fishboyz all da way down. Dis way, 'e hoped ta avoid da bulk of da panzee an' fishboyz firepower before 'itting dere lines..."

The War Walkers move towards the Ork forces, whilst Morgrim sends the Deffkoptas forward. Morgrim fails to seize the initiative

TURN 1

The Farseer guides the War Walkers and the left flank starts the long slog towards the Orks.

Enough fire power is in range to destroy two Trukks *again*. The Nobz Trukk Kareens backwards, the resulting explosion wounding 3 and pinning them On the plus side, the Deffkoptas survived, but this is not looking so good - it's a long way to the objectives on foot

The Tau do there tricksy Assault Phase movement.

"Not put off by da initial inconveniences of da destruction ov two of 'iz Trukks, Morgrim ordered Skarag and Da Inna Circul ta secure da sekund point ov int'rest while 'e stubb'nly continued wiv da orig'nal taktikal plan..."

Skarag and his Boyz run past the pinned Nobz whilst Rav'nwing II blasts a Sniper Drone. Rav'nwing I has less luck hitting the Crisis Suit.

Rav'nwing II assaults the remaining Sniper Drones...

...and sends them running!

Eldar & Tau: 0 Objectives (2KP)
Orks: 0 Objectives (1KP)

TURN 2

The Farseer guides the War Walkers again and the left flank continues the long slog towards the Orks.

Shooting sees, unsurprisingly, Morgrim's Trukk wrecked (*again*) - as well as both Deffkoptas put down. (*again* ) This time Morgrim's mega-armour protects him as he puts himself between the Eldar and Tau fire power and his disembarked Boyz.

Assault sees more tricksy Tau manoeuvring.

Morgrim splits off from his Boyz and both move towards the Fire Warriors and Broadsides. Skarag, his Boyz and the Nobz continue their long slog towards the second objective...

...and leg it some more.

Morgrim calls the Waagh to ensure he and his Boyz make it into combat...

...which they do with ease and...

...Morgrim runs down the Fire Warriors whilst his Boyz settle in for a longer slog with the Broadsides.

"Da plan wozn't goin' well. Wiv all 'iz mobility destroyed, Morgrim woz startin' ta get annoyed. 'E needed Snikrot's Kommandos ta show, but dere woz no sign ov 'em. Morgrim ordered 'iz Boyz ta attack da fishboyz wiv 'im. 'E wiped da fishboyz, runnin' dem down - not enuf challenge to sate i'z risin' annoyance. 'Iz Boyz were bogged down wiv da larger fishboyz. Morgrim left dem to it - 'e 'ad biggar fish ta fry!"

Eldar & Tau: 0 Objectives (5KP)
Orks: 0 Objectives (2KP)

TURN 3

The Farseer guides the War Walkers *again*. The far left flank continues the long slog towards the Orks heading towards the second objective, while those closer to Morgrim and his Boyz move to deal with them. As you may see, the War Walkers initially move to deal with Skarag's Boyz or the Nobz.

The Crisis Suit fired first and put two wounds on Morgrim with his fancy weaponry, which sliced through his mega-armour with ease. Meanwhile, the far left flank managed to get some wounds through the KFF onto Skarag's Boyz. Thinking Morgrim vulnerable, the Wraithlord and Dire Avengers fired on him, but his mega-armour bounced the shots off. Deciding Morgrim was still an issue, the guided War Walkers turned around and laid into him too. 10 mega-armour saves later and Morgrim is still standing!

In a final bout of desperation, the Crisis Suit charges Morgrim...

...with predictable results (though Morgrim did have to make another save...). Morgrim's Boyz finished off the Broadsides thanks to the Power Klawed Nob.

"Separated from 'iz boyz, Morgrim became da focal point of 'alf da fishboyz an' panzee's remainin' fire power. Da 'eavily armed fishboy in front ov 'im sailed over 'iz 'ead an' pummelled 'iz rear wiv itz fancy weaponz. Morgrim registered da pain an' let it invigorate 'im. Da uvvers tort 'e woz near 'iz end and tried ta finish 'im off. Da panzee shuriken weaponz pattered harmlessly off 'iz mega-armour. More annoyingly, da panzee Walkas almost blinded 'im wiv fire. Morgrim noted dat dey wud need ta be dealt wiv - but not before dat tricksy fishboy. Mork (or Gork) must 'ave 'eard 'iz torts - az da fishboy foolishly assaulted 'im, hopin' ta put 'im down where all deir fire power 'ad failed. Morgrim almost laffed, 'iz mega-armour deflecting da fishboyz desperate blow, 'iz Power Klaw puttin' 'im outta 'iz mis'ry. Meanwhile, 'iz Boyz 'ad finished da larger fishboyz. He yelled at dem ta secure da first point ov int'rest while he dealt with da panzees - startin' wiv dem damn Walkas - an' wonderin' where doze Kommandos 'ad got to. He trusted Skarag an' da Nobz were havin' more success wiv da sekund point ov int'rest..."

Da Nobz and Morgrim's Boyz run towards their respective objectives. (Morgrim's Boyz following the taktikal plan - and not charging the Wraithlord to tie it up) Skarag's Boyz take pot shots at the Shas'el, but only manage a single wound. (They were hoping for a bit of luck with the Rokkit Launcha...)

Morgrim assaults the War Walkers.

"Morgrim assaulted inta da panzee Walkas. Again, deir desperate attempts ta defend demselves pattered harmlessly off 'iz mega-armour. Morgrim proceeds to explode bofe ov dem, killin' four shuriken wield'n panzees in da process. Ov course, Morgrim iz protected by iz mega-armour..."

Eldar & Tau: 0 Objectives (5KP)
Orks: 0 Objectives (5KP)

TURN 4

The Farseer guides the Dire Avengers. The remaining Tau and Eldar move to deal with the two Ork forces, whilst the Wraithlord is sent forward to end Morgrim's rampage (again).

Shooting whittles Skarag's Boyz down to just Skarag and the Nob. The Dire Avengers whittle down Morgrim's boyz - cover saves save four, but not the Nob or the Big Shoota. Morgrim's mega-armour shrugs off the Wraithlord's Flamer and Missile Launcher...

...forcing the Wraithlord to assault him once again to end his rampage.

"But, Morgrim 'ad uvver ideas. 'E braced 'imself az da panzee Dread collided inta 'im, itz sword swingin' wildly. Two blows landed - one merely a flesh wound, d'uvver stopped by Morgrim's cybork skull plate. Morgrim's patience depleted, 'iz anga soarin', 'e sliced da panzee Dread inta three pieces before mov'in on tawards da fishboyz kommanda..."

The Kommandos arrive and contest the first objective whilst the remaining four Boyz from Morgrim's squad move in behind them. Skarag and the Nobz move towards the Eldar Guardians. Morgrim moves towards the Shas'el.

The Kommandos waste the second Sniper Drone Team whilst Morgrim's Boyz run behind them towards the first objective. Skarag and the Nobz put down a couple of Eldar Guardians before...

...Skarag and his remaining Nob assault the Eldar Guardians whilst Morgrim assaults the Shas'el.

"Morgrim, 'avin' 'ad enuff, found da fishboy kommanda in range an' assaulted inta 'im. Once again 'iz mega-armour harmlessly deflected da fishboy kommanda's attacks, once again 'e offed 'im wiv 'iz trusty Power Klaw. Skarag wozn't az lucky, bein' brought down by da panzees - but iz Nob survived an' 'eld - stoppin' dem from shootin' an' keepin' dem pinned for da Inna Circul."

Eldar & Tau: 0 Objectives (6KP)
Orks: 0 Objectives (8KP)

TURN 5

The Farseer guided the Dire Avangers again. With only two units free to move, they both moved in to finish Morgrim - the pain in their side.

Rapid firing Pulse Rifles and Bladestorming, Guided Dire Avengers all fail to find a chink in Morgrim's mega-armour.

The Eldar Guardians finish off Skarag's Boyz Nob, but drained by the fighting, fail to consolidate far enough to avoid the coming Nobz wrath!!

The Kommandos advance on the Fire Warriors whilst Morgrim's Boyz move onto the first objective, securing it. The Nobz advance on the Eldar Guardians. Morgim moves towards the Dire Avengers.

Shooting causes no casualties. Morgrim's Boyz run onto and around the first objective, securing it further.

All units except Morgrim's Boyz assault the remaining Eldar and Tau forces...

Morgrim survives another flurry of attacks, his Mega-Armour working overtime still, before killing the Farseer. The Kommandos and Nobz obliterate the Fire Warriors and Guardians respectively.

Eldar & Tau: 0 Objectives (7KP)
Orks: 1 Objective (11KP)

VICTORY: DA DARK ANGELZ!

AFTERMATH
"Az da battle came to a close, Morgrim woz last seen dispatchin' da panzee leada weirdboy an' battlin' da last ov da panzee forces - da fishboyz havin' bin removed from da field. Da Dark Angelz 'ad secured da vict'ry - stoppin' da panzees and da fishboyz from securin' da pointz ov int'rest an' givin' dem a gud kickin' az well. Many partz woz looted ta rebuild da Trukks and Deffkoptas, an' many panzees and' fishboyz interrogated." The Ork youths were all in an awed silence - except for one, who asked "Did dey find out about da Fall'n?". Ozmodii slapped da Ork youth heartily on his back. "Hurr Hurr - no. But dey 'ad sum fun discoverin' dat dey didn't knoze anythin'!"

Da Dark Angelz (Orks)
Well, this looked like it was originally going to end up like a replay of the first game. I was most disappointed to have two Trukks down in first turn *again* - and this time, further away from the Eldar & Tau lines - or the objectives! Start of turn one I thought I was playing for a draw, if not simply *not* to get annihilated! But apparently a firm goal, and a little bit of luck, go a long way to rectifying even the most horrible of starts. That and the Eldar and Tau became somewhat distracted by my Warboss rampaging through their lines - especially after the Wraithlord failed to take him out, or even hold him up. The late arrival of the Kommandos was worrying again - though it was putting the Eldar off Bladestorming - as they were saving it for them apparently... And those guided War Walkers are just nasty! My KFF just can't cope with the sheer number of shots coming through

Obviously, apart from the initial setbacks, I really enjoyed this game - especially after the last one. Taking a bad situation and watching it slowly turn over time. Of course - it could have all been over with a single roll of a 1 on the Warboss' *dozens* of 2+ saves, or the single 5++ save when it mattered against the Wraithlord. No surprise, he was my Ork of da Match!

Report Card:
Morgrim "Da Lion" Grimork (Da Warboss): Ork MVP! Accounted for 6 VPs all by himself - Fire Warriors, Crisis Suit, War Walkers, Wraithlord, Shas'el, Farseer - as well as surviving torrents of fire *and* the Wraithlord's charge. What more could you ask of an Ork Warboss? A+
Skarag Mekslag (Da Big Mek): KFF couldn't stop multiple hits, but offered some protection - both in and out of the vehicles. B
Snikrot's Kommandos:Accounted for Sniper Drones and Fire Warriors, but didn't show until turn 4 B
Grimskab Badwort (Da Painboy) and Da Inna Circul (5 Nobz) in a Trukk: Eventually wiped the Eldar Guardians. With another turn would have taken the second objective - but otherwise didn't have much impact. C
Da Warboss' Taktikal Boyz in a Trukk: Won the game Took out the Broadsides, and weren't distracted by the Wraithlord. A
Skarag's Taktikal Boyz in a Trukk: Made it across the field, but not to the end of the battle. C-
Rav'nwing I: Diverted fire from Trukks. C-
Rav'nwing II: Diverted fire from Trukks. Killed a Sniper Drone Team. C

Morgrim's saves = lol.

I was expecting to see your opponents hang back and plaster your forces as they ran across open ground, but instead they seemed too busy running TOWARD the ork close combat of doom machine. You didn't really need trukks or wagons to get in range with that kind of help from your opponent.

Also, I'm kind of surprised to see a tau list paired with an eldar list, and not see even a single skimmer.

@Imperial Monkey: I'm happy to say that I've managed to make some painting progress between battles (where possible). Will get back to you on the revenge soon

@Ailaros: In all fairness - only the Guardians ran forward enough to run into the Orks - but I guess the rest could have all moved *away* into the top left corner. Of course, the Kommando body count would then have been a lot higher I have noticed that, when I have been dismounted like this, I do have very few actual Orks - maybe this caused overconfidence in my opponents, but really, I think I was just lucky. I did need the Trukk to get Morgrim's awesome armour saves on the correct side of the board though (Slow and Purposeful). I think my brother (slice'n'dice) only has one Eldar skimmer, though the Tau player has many - but maybe they couldn't fit them into 600pts? (I don't actually know what the thinking behind their army composition was)

@shrike: Agreed, I just don't have the models at present. I have a 1500pt force in mind that is more representative along those lines...

@Eldrad: Then I will try to keep it up! I've been concerned in the past it makes things confusing or harder to read - but then, I've also noticed that with the number of photos I am taking, and how I present them, I sometimes find it hard to write more than a sentence of what is happening (and sometimes even that seems too obvious) Interested to hear others' opinions...

I agree, the orky turns it into half battle report, half narrative. Also it helps develop the character of the army.

@Ailaros: In hindsight, we should have moved away more. Until we failed to kill the warboss in turn 3, I felt like we had a firm grip on the game and should push the advantage. Unfortunately his warboss just wouldn't give up that last wound. I can't complain though. His KFF saves had been virtually non existent for both games.

Yea that was a very cool report. I too liked the bits of Ork telling the story. Very cool. And holy CRAP did Morgrim make some saves. I know it was mega armor but holy cow! My bosses are pretty much always in mega armor, and they still fail more then that. Nice turn around

@micahaphone: Yeah. I start to get a bit embarrassed when the luck skews so far (often with KFF saves or when both Deffkoptas hit and pen on first turn...) - but in this game it literally saved my game.

@KingCracker: Glad you enjoyed it. Seems a common sentiment - I'll have to try harder to include "Orky Perspective" in more of my reports.
