Alrighty!

So i am building a WH 40k Chaos Marines army themed on Iron warriors. I found a retailler online that sold stuff for cheap, but only some stuff, and I bought a kit containing two chaos Rhinos.

The second thing I did was buy Imperial Guard Heavy Weapon team x6 kit from the same dealer for the heavy weapons, then went to a different dealer and bought IG tank turret with autocannons.

I have plasticard, some good thick stuff as well as ones that are detailed, with grooves cut down the length of it (if i attach it to the model and put studs on it, it will look like plating, otherwise it looks similar enough to the panels on the predator which slot into the door-frame.

Now, I've got the theoretical stuff behind it, but i'm just wondering if someone out there has scratch-built the predator sponsons that also turn. I'd rather find out what's practical and durable before I waste a good deal of plasticard and two heavy bolters... The problem is that i am using the IG heavy bolters instead of the ready-to-mount predator ones. I am not concerned with the building all the other stuff around it, just finding the practical behind mounting the IG heavy bolter on an X-axis swivel (Y-Axis would be win too....).

I ask because materials are not that readilly accessible to me....

cheers and thanks

I have heard that if one where to google "4shared eli patoroch" that one might find all sorts of scratch building ideas

Now I don't have any practical experience with this, but I would think that you could do a good swivel with a bit of brass or plastic rod and a pin vise with a bit of the same diameter. Cut your upper and lower sponson brackets out of plasticard, stack them immediately atop one another and align them properly, drill straight through both of them at once so you know the assembly will align correctly, then mount them and stick the rod down through the holes. Make dirty jokes as appropriate, and then you're got yourself a horizontal swivel.
A lot of the FLGSs around here carry a bag of plasticard strips and rods, most of the craft stores carry brass rod. Hell, there's probably even something at walmart that's thin and vaguely rod-shaped that you could use.

thanks, i totally forgot about stacking the two sponson-mounts to get the holes to align.

Another thing, again off the top of my head- If you engage in some magnet shenanigans to attach said heavy weapons to the swivel, you could potentially use the magnets to both be able to switch out weapon load-outs as you see fit, AND be able to swivel them up and down as well.

Good neodymium magnets can be had on the cheap from ebay or a number of other online retailers. I'm not as versed on them as other people on this board probably are.

So, this is roughly where I am at. I dont have the turrets as yet so i stole it from a WIP Leman Russ to show where I am taking this. I am quite proud of the work despite how miserable it is because I've only really started working with plasticard. The only other thing I did was some work converting a throne of judgement to to a chaos venerable dreadnought. Going to have to find out what it is that makes for outstanding gap filler...

thats looking really good. Nice and subtle with the spikes, rather than too over the top. Much better look. The rear star is well implemented too.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

lol, thanks Flinty, if only it hadn't broken on me! After gluing it into place I applied some glue over the whole backside and waited for a few minutes, and then went at it with a file in the hopes that it would hide where it tore. I'll see how well I succeeded once I get to painting it.

Looks good so far. Might want to get rid of the Imperial Eagle if the tank is for CSM. Also noticed that you too are in Calgary.

oh the imperial eagle on the turret wont be there. For a second I had a heart attack that i was an imbecille and missed one... the turret is just a place-holder for the turret I will be using. Just got the turrets in the mail! only need the exterminator autocannon for it now.
