Subject: Can Opener - djphranq's Space Marine Army - May 27, 2011 (Pic Heavy)
My first 40k army was Space Marines. I eventually sold the lot of my SM little by little until all I was left with was a 10 man tac squad that was given to me from a friend. His little brother had put them together using Chaos backpacks and painted them black and gold. Anyway... this isn't about that.
I'm building up my forces again after a big break from the game. It will be Space Marines again.
I will be constructing a 2000 pt army that I plan to use at an event this summer. Actually I hope it will be built and fully painted by this summer at least. Given my work schedule I'm not sure I'll even make it to the event. Prior to the event I will try to get some games in at one of my FGS (favorite game store... I would have said FLGS but the store is no longer local to me).
I hope this one goes better than the other blogs I started...
Aside from the models themselves I need to consider my tools. I need to check on my brushes' quality. I'm not sure if I have enough glue. I need to revisit my paints to see what colors I want to use and are available... I'll definitely need a lot of blue.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Here is what I'm going to build:
Space Marine Captain on bike
Space Marine Bike Squads with attack bikes
Vindicators
Land speeders
Dreadnought
Drop pod
The models have been purchased already. Hopefully they will arrive by next week and I can get started... and maybe by some miracle I can attend a 40k event being held the weekend of that week.
I will have to admit. It was painful to purchase the models the way I did. I love my FGS and would have loved to order everything from them but due to some time constraints (or maybe due to my impatience >.< ... or it could be the timing of my paycheck and my availability or lack there of to go to my FGS), I went with an online retailer. This doesn't mean I won't go through my FGS for future orders. I already have an idea for some other armies... and those I'm not trying to build in too much of a hurry.

Well the stuff arrived. Its Tuesday as I type this up. I don't know if I can pull off constructing some of this stuff in time for an event this Saturday... actually this isn't even all of it... more bikes are to arrive by the end of the week hopefully.
Spoiler:
Possible Workspace... just have to finish up some comp stuff.
The usual workspace... just need to clear up some paperwork and get a desk lamp.
The delivery arrived in this box... there should be a followup box with more bikes later this week.
The box had a huge ol' dent.
Here is most of the stuff I'll be working with... more bikes to come later.

I did a little bit of work on the project tonight... didn't do much because I had class this evening after work. I just cut out bits enough for my sergeants and captain. I used bits from the Ravenwing Battleforce box and Commander kits.
Spoiler:
Here are the bits for 4 bikes... 3 sergeants and 1 Captain.
Here are the bits for the sergeants.
Here are the bits for the captain. They pretty much are the same as the sergeants' with the exception of the head, one shoulder pad, backpack, front chest piece, and iron halo.

Your best bet is to each part one by one so glue all the wheels together, then all the torso then put all the bikes together, get my drift, its boring as hell but it gets them knocked out far quicker.

I plan to do something like that... I'm gonna play some music or listen to a podcast so I don't get bored.

I was hoping to have stuff constructed by Saturday so I could have an army to play at an event at Black Diamond Games in the Bay Area... Its like an ironman event where you try to play as much games as you can. Point limit is whatever is agreed upon with each opponent.

6 Hours = 18 bikes and 3 attack bikes ... that was last night (2/24).
Today I'm going to try to go for the rest of it: 3 Vindicators, 3 land speeders, a dreadnought, and a drop pod.
Yesterday I listened to like 3 episodes of The Eternal Warriors... today I might do the same thing or maybe I'll change things up and listen to the Soundtrack for Final Fantasy Tactics (recently found that amongst my PS1 RPGs).
Spoiler:
Automatically Appended Next Post: Sergeants and Captain - first hour and a half or so of work.
4 to 5 hours later got the rest of the bikes done.
And this is the glue I used... Citadel Super Glue Thin.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Tonight (2/25)
3 hours = 3 really bad Landspeeders :(
The chassis pieces were pretty warped. 2 of them didn't seem so bad... until you tried to put it on. The 3rd looked like someone manhandled.
I will use these LS for play but will eventually replace them... maybe I'll get lucky and not get warped pieces
A gap is visible between the top and bottom half of the chassis.

Got Vindicators built... danged camera ran out of juice.
All that's left is a Dreadnought and a drop pod I think I'll hold off from building those... I'll save them for next time. I believe I have enough to play one of my lists.
Spoiler:
Automatically Appended Next Post: 6 more hours later... built the dreadnought and drop pod... plus my camera battery fully charged up... I haven't gone to sleep yet... its 413AM us Pacific time. >.<
Here are the vindicators... that siege shield is kind of tricky.
Here is the dreadnought and the drop pod. These are the first of these models that I've put together.
The drop pod wasn't as bad as I thought it would be to put it together.
I had fun putting the dreadnought together... I'm going to make a Dreadnought heavy list some time in the future just so I can build a bunch of them.

So I got stuff built... but I ended up waking up super late the next day... I missed the event.
It isn't so bad though. I don't feel as pressured to build as fast as possible so I can now take time to remedy any models that I'm not satisfied with their construction (RE: Land speeders).
Spoiler:
Automatically Appended Next Post: Finally dropped some bones for AOBR...
...mostly got it (AOBR) for the Dread but the other stuff that come with it is looking kind of cool.

Seriously though when I was trying to build this army under time constraints, mold lines were the last thing on my mind... but now that I have a new deadline (sometime in July), I might consider fixing them up.

Did you use elastic bands when you constructed your LS cos if not then that was your problem. You need to band them once you start your gluing.
Solid progress on the builds though. And yes if you have time tackle the mould lines but don't go crazy over them, especially if this is a gaming army. Just get the worst off.
Also if you have no need of the Orks then I suggest you post up in the Trades forum or ebay them. That way you can get more marines.

That is alot of bikes. o_O My hubby agrees those Landspeeders are a pain in the butt to put together. Elastic bands were the solution though. Thank the world for the invention of elastic bands.
Good luck with the rest of your building. Building this many in a row would drive me nuts. Kudos. But I really agree with Hamani about the mould lines and extra chunks.
Here is the AoBR Dread built... just need 2 more like these.
Spoiler:
More bikes arrive today.
Going to work with this... x6.
This is mostly why I bought the SM squad bike box rather than more Ravenwing boxes.
Only 4 out of the 6 sm bike boxes came with the bit I needed.
Scrounging around in the bits I have I found 2 meltaguns and a couple arms to replace the 2 metal bits that didn't come in 2 of the bike squad boxes. The Meltaguns come from the Tactical squad box... the arms are from the vehicle accessories sprue. I took the gunner arms and cut them into single arms.
Here is a meltagun marine using the Metal bit.
Here is one shot of a marine using the plastic melta and arm bits.
Here is another shot of the plastic meltagun marine.
Here is the front view of the plastic meltagun marine.
Here are the meltagun marines built.
All bikes built.

good lord you are charging hard. I am in total agreement that if you spend three or four hours cleaning up the mold lines and drilling gun barrels you will feel 100% better about your army in the long run. especially when its on the field of battle and they score painting. How are you going to paint it and what is your theme.
Pestilence Provides.

I'm playing with the idea of painting them as the Ultramarines... mostly because thats what I've played before and there is something about them being 'vanilla' that I like. At first I was going to paint them as Salamanders but the bikes don't scream out 'green' to me. Another idea was to paint them in colors similar to Master Chief from the Halo series.
In regards to mold lines and cleaning them up... I'm pretty content with how they are... with the exception of the Land Speeders. This army is mostly for playing and I'm not looking to win any painting contests... its mostly about how happy I am with them. It just feels good to be building models again.

Yes everyone knows that on the seventh day the lord didn't rest, he built his new LS Storm using elastic bands and glue .
Um you should contact GW about not getting the pieces in the sets, they should compensate you for it.
As for painting them as Ultras, you could but I think it would be a waste, don't get me wrong I love Ultras but I think if you went for something a bit different that would be cooler.
If you check out Lexicanum you will find plenty of inspiration for a colour scheme. I'll add the links.
If I were you I would consider a Hawk Lords biker army. The bikes are black and gold, with the riders wearing purple and gold. The look pretty sweet individually so I have have no doubt they'd be epic en masse.

I've built enough for 1850... at first I was going for 2000 pts but the event that I'll be using this army at changed the pts requirement to 1850.
I'll add more to eventually make 2000 and 2500 pt lists but for now 1850 is good.
I'm not going to start any painting until the weather gets warmer here. In the meantime, I'll see about doing some clean up on the models... also I've started another army ("Crazorback") ... plus I'm fooling around with other stuff.

Today (3/6), after work and after getting something to eat I started in on the foam... 2 hours later I was done.
4 regular bikers, 6 meltagun bikers, and captain... the two empty spots are for a couple more meltagun bikes I still plan to build.
16 regular bikes
3 land speeders and a bike sergeant with combi-melta... there is a space reserved for another sergeant which I plan to build in the future.
2 dreads, 3 attack bikes, 2 sergeant bikers with combi-meltas... there's space for another dread and another attack bike (to be built in the future).
3 Vindicators...I probably could have fit 4 if I laid them on their side but I was going for a low profile for the foam so it would fit better with the other foam trays.
1 drop pod... 2 more spaces for two that I plan to build in the future.
1 inch foams that act as tops for the drop pod trays. I could only get foam that was 4 inches deep. Laid on its side the drop pod peaks over the top. These are tops to cover the little bit that goes beyond the tray depth.
9 Assault Termies... space for 1 more... these guys aren't actually part of the Can Opener... I had a couple lists that would fit them in with the rest of Can Opener... I guess you could say these are part of my 'side board'.
Land Raider Redeemer... This is for when I might use 5 termie's from my 'side board'
