What are some good counts-as alternatives to land speeders? I'm assembling an army that is, fluff-wise, working for a rogue trader and not averse to trading and/or salvaging xenos tech. I'm currently looking at Piranhas and Vypers. Would either of those be viable stand-ins, assuming their normal weapons are replaced with the appropriate SM weapons? I'm certainly not opposed to non-GW models either, if anyone has good suggestions there.

I'd been about to say pirhana when i saw you mention it. You could try kit-bashing something too?

Lets say you hijacked the front section of the valkyrie, and mashed it to eldar bits or something, or used the canopy cover on the pirhana etc

Theres a fellow who actually used one of the storm trooper troop carriers or at least is planing to as an option for a gun-cutter. I might reccomend trying to find one in the correct scale to use as the particular variant--i forget what its called--that carries scouts in its troop hold.

I'd have to say something based off a WW2 Jeep would be cool, or even a flying M113.

I always thought a speeder converted to look like the gunships from Avatar would be cool, I saw a picture of one once but didnt save it and have not seen it sense then.

I like the valkyrie cockpit and apache/hind ideas. I've got a big soft spot for those helicopter sorts of things though.

I might still try out a piranha or vyper too if I can find a used one for cheap.

Im actually thinking you might score if you run to a hobby shop and look through the military/sci-fi section. Especially if the manufacturer is Tamiya because you can get some decent stuff for way cheap.

when i see these i think "way too big for a land speeder"

these are to 40k as a valkarie, vendetta, or a storm raven, all of which dwarf the land speeder

Here you can see the scale I was thinking (the Elites and Master Chief being spacemarines).

I know it's still a land speeder but the storm kit is pretty good to play with as standard plasticard fits perfectly (as if that's what it was made of ).

I've made two of these for my rogue trader force and they've even stood in for my vendetta in fifth.

I intend to make at least one more and maybe a med-evac unit. maybe you could blend a landspeeder and a pirahna together?

Bar blowing my own trumpet.................any use?

I do generally like the twin-rotor/fan design like the avatar/halo ones, but I'm hesitant to go with them for two reason. 1: Most of them are definitely too big, like Alex said. But 2: they are EEEEEVVVERYWHERE these days. Avatar, Halo, C&C, StarCraft, even Terminator, sorta. If I wanted to do what everyone else was doing, I'd just stick to normal land speeders

That said, sluggaslugga, I do quite like that last helicopter you posted. If not for a land speeder, then at least just because it's pretty awesome looking. What's it from?

I'll definitely be checking the local hobby shops for discount military kits though. Might find some good conversion fodder.

try ebaying for the second edition ones. I once saw in the dakka dakka gallery some guy who actually took the modern plastics and converted them to be very much like the older ones (which were infinitely cooler than the new ones). I bloody wish I had bookmarked the gallery.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

You could just get a land speeder but put some piranha pieces and tau or eldar bits on it to make it look like your guys made their own variant of the land speeder using alien technology.

yep they've been used as chimera's in the past. The moment I finished the first one I fell in love. just need to paint them now.......

Back to the OP I'd try for a landspeeder/pirahna cross as Liche said and see where it takes you.

I dont think that would be that great a mix honestly. It might do to take the weapons from the landspeeder, but it's hard to take much else. Maybe clip the wings off from the landspeeder and add them to he pirhana because the remaining land-speeder can still be converted to some sort of ground-based vehicle, but Im pretty convinved you might need the valkyrie parts to fill in the cockpit as well as the canopy. Could porably use sentinel drivers too. Actually, could probably use several sentinel parts to bulk out/imperialize more of the pirhana. maybe leman russ accessories too, like the exhaust, extra hatch and vent.
