All hail the Imperium – The fluff starts here
Well those of you that know my chaos blog (found in my sig) will be aware that I try and cover too many projects at the same time. Well it’s time for more, I may still only be working on my first army at present but I have so many ideas I’ve decided to be a bit of a dabbler.
My main army for gaming purposes will be my Thousand Sons army which has its first game towards the end of August and the painting is on track for 1500 points. If you check the log you will also see the other chaos projects that I want to cover.
I’ve also decided to start an imperial log as well, I have no miniatures yet but I have ideas and like to share what’s in my head as there is so much.
My plan is instead of concentrating on painting an army at a time is to paint units from various armies as I go along. This keeps things very fresh from my painting and modelling perspective and hopefully interesting from your perspective to see what I come up with next.
If the need arises and a tournament comes up and I want to play a certain force I have the option of painting a lot more units for that army to bring it to the relevant points or joining up the small warbands or strike forces for the imperium to make them playable.
So this is a rough list of chapters and other imperial forces I’m going to be looking into over the coming months. I’m very fluff orientated as I enjoy the modelling and painting side so much which is where all my inspiration and ideas come from, each chapter/army for me needs to be very different in appearance not just colour. So if anyone can point me in the right direction for good fluff for any of these I would be very obliged.
Howling Griffons – Love the colour scheme of these guys and believe they have special pride in their oaths, not sure how to represent this on models, maybe lots of purity seals. They also have the option of their night world livery.
Dark Angels – Based on their Red Indian heritage which seems to be missing from GW’s current versions of them
Red Scorpions – I don’t know much about these so will need some back ground fluff help , I really like the FW models and look forward to painting them.
Ultramarines – I have a special idea of doing an Ultramarine army based on new recruits in their training stages working out how to use their weapons and general fun conversions like guys tripping over stuff etc. This idea was inspired from a few posts from the Rebuilding the Mantis Warriors blog by Gitsplitta.
White Scars – Based on their Mongol ancestry, not sure to stick with bikes or uses horses yet.
Imperial Beastmen (Guard) – Every since Rouge Trader I’ve wanted to do an Imperial Beastmen army and with all the models that I need now in plastic and my new confidence in converting it may very well happen.
Genestealer Cult (Imperial Guard) – Another army based on the guard codex but this one will be very different. Not sure how I’m going to do it yet but that’s part of the fun. I’ve just downloaded the Genestealer Cult mini dex from BoLS for some inspiration.
Exorcists - Based on the Grey Knight codex
Sisters of the Nights Rose - Sisters of Battle army
Deathwatch - Allies for the Sisters of Battle
Blood Angel and Space Wolf codexs are covered in the chaos blog.
That’s it for me for now if I’ve missed any interesting armies that can be based off the imperial codexs let me know.
Yes no signs of xenomorphs yet!

I will definatly be following this.
I have to disagree with you Dark angel Idea though, Dark angels are supposed to be knights, The ravenwing are the name given to the knights that rode horses on Caliban before the emporer arived. Most of the Dark angels stuff is based on "The order" who went out and slayed the creatures of the forest just like legends of knights slaying dragons in the olden days. If you would like to know the background of the Dark angels better then go out and read "Decent of angels" and to a lesser extent "Fallen angels" also has some background on the dark angels, just don't expect a brilliant plot or a well writen novel.

No problem, if you ever need some info on the fluff there is a good chance I will know, reading every HH book several times over really gets you into the fluff, I recomend you read them if you play Chaos or Imperium.

The first mini to start things rolling in this blog alongside everything that I'm working on in my chaos one.
This is the Ultramarine Training Corps Sergeant Osmond, ready to start training his tactical squad when they arrive for duty.
I expect things will be very bitty in this blog with random marines from different chapters for a while until I focus on one of them as a main project.
I do have on order the Grey Knight Stormraven Conversion kit from Chapterhouse, albeit I don't have a Stormraven yet! Also there's an alternative model for a Vindicare Assassin on its way soon as well.
I will hopefully be giving this guy a lick of paint either this weekend or next.

I managed to paint Sergeant Osmond today, It was quite fun painting something that doesn't have old dirty and worn out armour like my Khorne Berserkers I'm currently doing.
I hope you like him the rest of the squad when I do them will be new recruits in some...well learning poses. My entire Ultramarine army will be based on the training ground, there's going to be loads of fun conversions to come in the future.

And I'll have to disagree with this. This applies if you only follow the current 'fluff' in the Horus Heresy novels. If you've ever read Deathwing, the novel, you'll know that the Dark Angels recruit from all over, not just Caliban. One of those worlds would be reminiscent of a native american (red indian) culture. In the novel, the Terminators sent back to that world to recruit were from that world, with names like 'two-heads talking', and iirc, 'weasel-fierce'. So while they are Dark Angels, and have their 'dark angel' names as well, they were also indian and held to those customs.
If you also notice on the old metal deathwing, and the current plastic terminator bitz, there are feathers and tokens that speak to that heritage.
I am going to be doing my deathwing in their original black armor (prior to the events in the novel Deathwing, which was the precipitating event to them coloring their armor white/bone), and keeping the indian influences. So I'd say to the OP to keep your options open :-)

Yes but even on caliban they were knights. The novel deathwing is pretty old now, I wouldn't consider it still canon. And whilst one of the recruiting worlds might resemble native american culture it is unlikely, in most of the fluff they recruit from death worlds where all the people are savages anyway, The Purging of Kadillus, it mentions some stuff about where some of the dark angels were from and describes a world they recruit from, the dark angels are way beyond their roots and most of them can't remember much at all about their home world.

In regards to the Dark Angels I'm going to be doing them pre-heresy I've decided so they will be in black with a lot of FW parts, just seen the new (old) Land Raider reminds me when I got one first time round.
I have a small update this week in the form of a WIP shot of Inquisitor Valeria from the Grey knight codex, I know I wasn't initially going to even look at doing them but I picked up a cheap codex off ebay so they will also be added to the list of imperial armys I'll be looking into.
Here she is, she still needs some work in the hair department, yes I now she's supposed to have a Dark Eldar dagger but she's over compensating so she can stand out amongst all the Grey knight Nemesis weapons. I know the Hyperstone Maze look's like a bar of soap but trust me when its painted it will look really good .

I done some more work on Inquisitor Valeria today.
Added a Graviton Beamer to her back pack, no idea what one actually looks like so made my own.
I've also finished her hair as well.
She's all primed up now in line to be painted.

Cheers glad you like them, yeah the handle does look a tad long looking at it now.
I broke out the Sculpey today for the first time and made a base for what will be my Vindicare Assassin.
I really enjoyed using it, need some practice but then I intend on doing the rest of my Grey Knight army in this way and I will also be using a lot to create the bases for the Dark Wolves project in the chaos blog which will most likely be running side by side with the Grey Knight one.
I have added a few bits of rubble and tided it up a bit more since this pick.

Not updated this thread in ages due to all the things going on in my Chaos one which is my main priority for painting at the moment. But a small update today none the less.
Some sisters have managed to creep up on the unexpecting chaos hordes on my painting table, I've spent a few hours today getting rid of mold lines and flash. They are currently as below and there's more on the way.
I'm going to try and paint these with harsher highlights than my chaos stuff to make them stand out more on the gaming table, I'm trying to win best painted army at my local tournaments the chaos aren't getting remotely close so I'm hoping these girls will. I'm also going to be using pigments for the first time as well, that's going to be interesting I'm sure.
Basing wise it's going to be red and dusty kind of like Mars. I'm currently working on a test model but nothing worth showing yet.
I'm currently missing four normal backpacks so if anyone knows a good place to source them other than ebay (I'm already watching out for them there) please let me know.

Well I was supposed to be painting some Dark Wolves today in my chaos blog but got distracted by the Sister sitting on my painting table.
So I started the Sisters of the Nights Rose.
This is the test model and first time playing with pigments as well, I'm not sure they have fully dried yet!
Well here she is, let me know what you think. I'm going for a Mars type basing effect for my Sisters.

I've finally built my entry for YB's Fire Hawk contest which you can find here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/150/446880.page#4373235 I have no intention of getting it in before the end of the comp as I've been dedicating my time to painting my Skyrar's Dark Wolves in my chaos thread as they have a tournament next month.
But it shall be finished by the end of July all being well.
I had no legs for the mini which was another delaying factor but I found some spare Space Wolf ones today and removed all the runes so they look like normal.

I painted the Fire Hawk just in time for the comp which finishes today. The third picture is more representative of the actual colour in real life.
I don't think he turned out too bad although I'm terrible at freehand so the flames aren't the best.

That red has come out very nice. The flames are good G, you got the wavyness right, if you make the base line a bit wavyer also, it will be perfect.

Today I put together my St Celestine conversion, she still needs GS work but I'm quite happy how she turned out.
I've also got what will become my Exorcists Librarian
The Exorcists will be from both the Space Marines and Grey Knights codex and will be allied to the Sisters when needed although the Grey Knights will end up being a fully playable army as well.
