So now to have a slight more interesting update to yesterday's text wall, some Malifaux. Picked up another pack of Gaki while out yesterday (in between loses ) and have mostly assembled them. Then remembered the fun of the Gaki with the two part head so he's not going to have a lower jaw. Works with them surprisingly anyway. Friend got me involved in the Malifaux league the store is running at the moment so I'm actually considering repainting my crew for it. They look alright, but they were from before I even started repainting the SoB with their current scheme. More or less they were a practice run for them in a way. Looking at it I kind of want to try and have a go at giving it an elaborate pattern on the kimono. Without the gore as it seems to detract from it. Closeups of the rest of the crew. The snow for starters needs to be fixed anyway since it was even before I figured out how to get the snow to look fluffier. Anyway onto today's addition to the grey skin. I know it's going a touch slow, but I plan on grabbing all of these fragments and putting them together when it's all done anyway. Using a small brush carefully apply black ink to the inside of the mouth, the collar, the eyeballs and any jewlery that is to become bronze later. It is much easier if you try to keep the ink near the very tip of the bristles and ensure that it comes to a fine point before you bring it anywhere near the model. Taking a piece of paper and lightly brushing it across while twisting it slightly can help form the tip and remove any excess ink. As you want to be careful not to have too much on the brush so you have more control over it and it is less like a wash. Continuing when dry using the same small brush, 00 or Fine Detail, apply Dwarf Bronze to the jewellery and the tabard if it is chain. When applying to the jewellery you want to try and keep it straight on mostly, if you're careful enough though you can angle it to the side to cover the necklace in an even coat with less chance of hitting the flesh near it. Of course you want to do this from the left side in this case so that it doesn't get in the way of itself. Once the Bronze is dry using a brush of the same size you want to apply Leviathan Purple directly to the recesses. Focusing on using the point of the brush. Areas such as just under the ledge of the armour, under arms, eye sockets, the top of the recess in the center of this necklace design, under the clavicle and on the lips. Once the lips have dried, if you intend to shade them (not all of them are in poses that will benefit from it, some will not be noticeable) apply white to the teeth. Taking care you can use the side of the brush to cover them both, then come back to tidy up with the tip of the brush. Always remember to try to not hit the flesh as it will be annoying to fix. Don't mind the brightness of it as it will be shaded in the next step, sort of self highlighting.

Once again with a small brush, though this time with Badab Black (or thinned black ink depending on which you have on hand), apply it to the bronze areas and teeth. Start with the bronze areas as you will only want a tiny bit on the teeth and want to keep the pooling to the absolute minimum. Once the teeth are done put a touch more into the mouth to help clean up any mess you may have made then finally apply a tiny bit to the hairline. An important thing to remember for applying it to the hairline is that you want to keep a fine tip on the brush and to not put too much pressure on it. more or less you're aiming for a tiny bit of shading to break it up a little and maybe make the face stand out more. The hairline is optional, but I've done it on all of them and sort of like the look it gives. You can also add it to the eyes and the area just above them.
Once dry highlight the teeth and bronze. You're aiming for the edges raised towards the light source for the bronze and more to the bottom of the teeth. Try not to cover too much of the shading near the top of the teeth.
Teeth look a touch bright, though it's partially the lighting for these WIP pictures. Eitherway if they appear too bright after highlights you can wash them again lightly to tone them back down.
As for the Malifaux repaint currently I have three Seishin and two Onryo soaking. Seeing as more or less they were the test for the SoB scheme and it is a skirmish game I feel I should try to make each of them stand out a little more. Though they would still need a unifying colour. For that I'm thinking either a blue or green (as it is the faction colour for Ressurectionists). Although you don't really see faction colours used in Malifaux as they are in 40k as each crew is more or less a separate force built around the theme of their master. The factions seem more or less for dividing them into categories. Anyway one idea I've had is to try to attempt a scale pattern for either the Onryo or Kirai, though being the master Kirai would have to probably look better.
Something like this, which I found while searching for the type of blue I had in mind.
However for Kirai I've had something similar to this in mind.
The important thing is this time I'm going to avoid trying to use gore with them, even though when you read the background it makes sense.
I also need to sort of pick a style of spirit this time around and stick with it as the crew is small but I have three different styles already.
There's the glowing energy type.
The fading type, which I like the look of the most.
Then the one that allows more room with painting which is the sort of "undead" grey look.
Like the grudge.
Either way every model in the crew is a spirit except Kirai, who actually benefits more by killing herself and becoming one anyway. Sort of tempted to pick up two Ubumes as she sort of looks like an undead Kirai a tiny bit. But, that would be something to leave for later in the crew when I have nothing else to get that they can use.

Edit: Seeing as the painting contest is now done I can show the completed Henrietta. Not sure how I ranked as it just did the top three, but it was good to paint for a challenge for a change.

Slight name change to the blog, makes it more general and gives me more space to add descriptions about each update. Sort of a win-win in a way.
The Daemonette is done.
The eye just seems to do that all the time, though it is just black like all the others.
As for the Malifaux crew, the first wave for stripping is done. Which consists of two Onryo and three Seishin; I'm not going to repaint the Seishin I scratch built as I'm just more likely to replace them with actual models. Just need to base then prime them before they're ready to be hopefully upgraded. But first I suppose more musing over possible schemes I can do. I still haven't decided on crew's tying colour and will probably put it up as a poll. Though I am set on either blue or green at the moment. For the Onryo I'm thinking their masks could be painted with a pattern this time, they eyes glowing in whatever the tying colour ends up being.
Ikiryo as well I suppose due to her mask. As for the type of spirit I go with, I'm thinking the Seishin will have to be sort of the fading type while the others I guess can have a bit more colour to them, though probably should look somewhat drab. Especially Dastsue-Ba who seems to really suit it.

The first lot of the crew to be repainted is all good to go for painting, yet I think I'll give the poll a little more time first.
Thinking of something I could get done while waiting, I remembered this model from a little back. Finally got around to priming it.

Couple of shots of the Dialogus, making fast progress on this one surprisingly. Though not without flaws. Some areas I'll need to go back and touch up, but a fair amount of it is just adding in shading.
For the tubes I'm thinking a lightning effect. For the rod however I need to darken it a bit to try and pull off a marble effect. Rushing into it rather than looking up a tutorial and figuring it out for myself as usual.
I don't think I'll do the weathering on the cloth as usual as it would look a little out of place I think. Lots of buckles and such to make up for it though. The face itself needs a touch more shading, more noticeably just above the eyes, but below the eye brows which seem to have painted themselves. Then a tiny bit under the nose, lips then a tiny highlight on the tip of the nose and ear; the really annoying part due to how much it can screw up... OSL may creep a little more forward on the hair, but leaving it as is for now. The staff is the part that needs the most attention at the moment I think. As well as the white, but then that's highlighting and washes in the recesses. Then there's the pin stripe on the sleeve that needs touching up.

Managed to get the eyes done without any issues for a change.
Especially the left eye, usually with the SoB they're positioned in a way that makes it really difficult to get both eyes; this model may not be a SoB, but it did kind of have the same issue.
First thing the pictures show me though, is that the teeth need fixing...
I also brought the OSL a little further forward on the top of her head and added more white followed by a really watered down blue wash to the sources, though they're still not quite bright enough I think. Though they could be in a good place considering the glow's brightness.
The rod has also been darkened a bit, but I'm now unsure of the turquoise grip as it sort of blends in. Might swap it out for black or white.

Thanks everyone.
Finished the Dialogus, decided to darken the rod a touch more then added gloss varnish to it. Looks kind of like marble enough for the scale.
Going with the somewhat fancy naming scheme I have for the Sororitas this is Palantine Lily, Duelest of the Thorn; who's also the twin or the Canoness Alphonsine, Thorn's Blade.
Should kind of get around to writing out the background I sort of have for the army, helps keep the naming in line in my opinion and gives some decent ideas at times such as the Immolator the command squad rides in being covered in a mural representing the burning of the world they were based on. Anyway moving along to the last infantry model I had left to paint for this force at the moment. Rushed it as I was under the impression I'd be having a game later, but that ended up being pushed back. Still not bad for about an hour at the most.
Good news is I intend to replace all the models in the army with this pose later anyway. Just pop off the back pack then put it onto a new one later.
Which completes the command squad the Aegis of The Thorn.
Then I actually felt more like modelling than painting so I dragged out that house brick I've been slowly chipping away at for a fair while now. I was set on getting decorative resin plates for the sides, but I actually kind of like this. Sort of the look of the older Rhino.
Ignore the extra holes in this side, I was going to put more rivets in, but besides being somewhat off center I liked the look of the three rivets so they'll be filled when I get around to smoothing all the edges of the plates.
Now for a close up of the rivets themselves.
They're that wire method I mentioned wanting to "invent" somewhat, the cool thing is they actually act as rivets instead of being completely ornamental. You drill a bit into the surface, dip wire into a touch of super glue then place it into the hole. Then taking clippers with the flat edge to the surface snip the rivet from the rest of the wire at the desired length. Should leave a flat edge. If not they can be filed later; these aren't filed just snipped off so far. I decided if I'm going to try and test out an idea somewhere, why not a $100+ model I've been working on on and off for about six months or so, maybe more.
I probably could have gone with a lower gauge, however I don't have the wire or the drill bit for that. This is just the stuff I usually use to pin models. Also this is plastic card, not cardboard; they're cards used for games. Buy them in store to put money in with a code, then they're worthless, figured I'd hold onto a bunch as they're decent enough plastic card. Also free when you think about it.
I've also divided the squads up and realise I actually have a ninja Dominion squad. Probably not going to use them as such, but they are all painted up. Also the first squad needs its own superior still. They come with the sword and plasma pistol ones, or did rather, but I've always liked to just give them bolters. So I was thinking, why not get this and swap out the weapon.
The second squad already uses the actual Canoness model as its superior. Then looking back at the first squad.
They could use a repaint as the next project for them whenever it is I do get around to fixing up that superior.
But, first I did say I was going to repaint some Malifaux so I guess I should get onto that.

Well blue won the poll, so more or less I'm going to try to stick with an electric blue.
Which I sort of found while painting up these Seishin, I think it's about a 1:1 Ice Blue to Enchanted Blue.
Anyway these turned out to be sort of quick to paint since I tried out a bit of wet blending. Started with Regal Blue focusing on covering better towards the head and leaving the "feet" completely black. I mixed it up through to Enchanted Blue, then to Ice Blue and finally to white. Had to do it all at once so no time to stop to take pictures. A final bit of pure white was lightly added to the very tip of the face and to the eyes with a small brush. Bases aren't done yet as I'm still contemplating between going with a field or going with snow. However the bases weren't dry completely when I primed, something that could be seen as bad but it gave the ground a nice sort of sloshy look which would work well with either the snow or as a sort of marsh. Another thing to remember I suppose is that I plan to add Ubume to the crew later. As she comes with a pond base and she's about luring passerbys to "save her baby" from drowning only to drag them under the pond and drown them instead. Although I'd like the look of a more winter themed base to sort of lend to the cold sort of look the blue will give them, I'm not quite sure how I'd go about with that pond. It could still work, but it'd sort of be like an ice fishing hole in the middle of all the snow. Like the Nekima I used earlier for the Daemons her pond is actually a separate base insert so I could, or rather would, need to build her a new pond if I were to go with the snow; the insert has lilypads they would look odd.
Either way the trick would be to try to make it look as if a majority of these spirits have little effect on the base around them. Besides maybe the odd faint glow here and there.

Continuing on to the first Onryo. I'm saving the bases for when they're all done to keep it consistent if I do go with snow. A bit easier to mix one batch then put it on all the bases at the same time.
Still got some stuff to do on this, the fan in its left hand for one. Maybe highlight the darker cloth a little more. Perhaps mess with the hair a touch to try and highlight it a little more. Think the face got the leering look I wanted, maybe fix up the red on the left cheek to bring it more in line with the right.

Got the second Onryo done a bit now. Not quite liking its mask design as much as the first, but I want to keep them all looking different anyway.
The first also got a few highlights to make the dark blue look a touch better and the gold as well. Though it's probably not so noticable.
Then to show overall progress so far with this. Kind of like showing it in this way, perhaps I'll do it for whenever it is I repaint something.
Upon thinking about the bases it's probably best that I go with a grassland/marsh sort of theme. Mostly because of Ubume and her pond. Though the only difference would be which flock I add at the end anyway.

Finished off their bases in a sort of swampy theme. Simple enough as it was a Besital Brown base, drybrushed with Snakebite Leather then washed down with some Devlin Mud. Once it had the right look to it I gave each base a decent coat of gloss. Allowed it to pool as well in some of the recesses as little puddles to go along with the fresh muddy look it gave it. Then just normal grass flock. As usual the pictures are a fair bit bigger so you can zoom in in the gallery if you want. Anyway had a bunch of Orks I wasn't using. Seeing how with the ally rules my brother could take them with his Dark Eldar we ended up trading. So now I have a bunch of Necrons I need to strip, but for now will sit around until I'm bored of these projects or done with them. Not sure why I didn't have Necrons already due to how much I enjoy using OSL. But, I am painting up just one to get a feel for the scheme I have in mind. Remembered and used the same method for metal I used on some Dark Elves awhile ago. Boltgun base, badab wash, blue wash, badab wash, highlight boltgun, badab wash, blue wash and then a final blue wash. Depending on how much you use per coat of course. It's more or less until you're happy with the feel of it, I do think you should do the highlights just before you think it's just right though. Makes them fit a bit more with such a dark colour. For the OSL I have a couple colours in mind; pink, blue or turquoise. Something bright for contrast. Red could work as well I suppose. I should also add that the second Malifaux wave has finished stripping and that I also put a battle sister in for that tutorial.

those Onryo´s you have done recently really creep me out^^ the grudge feel of these japaneese mini is really bloodchilling^^... and you did them very good looking too... same goes for the Seishin... they too look very good ...what are these anyway? looks like flying dragin heads to me...

Well all the Malifaux things for this crew except the leader are spirits based on Japanese mythology. The Seishin are just stray spirits in this. The leader can sort of "transform" them into the other types of spirits and even gathers more when stuff dies around her. Though there can't be more than five at once.
No other suggestions on OSL colour other than orange?

Probably should have updated this earlier, but it's been done for a couple of days.
Went with an uncommon colour for Necrons.
Made that pink work as grimdark. Already decided Telsa weaponry will be blue whenever it is I get around to it. Also it may not be noticeable, but the metal was given an additional wash of green before I moved on to the OSL. At least it's visable as metal now and doesn't look like it's just been primed like the other picture.
As for the second wave of repaints, I need to glue the Gaki back together though I may just set them aside for a full Gaki wave. The wave at the moment though is Ikiryo, Spirit of Lost Love (lawyer stand in) and that tutorial sister.
