I posted this over in my blog for my new force but I thought I might throw it here aswell since it is... tutorialish.

Blog is at: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/434539.page#3999204

I am going for a more worn/warm tone look than Templars normally get.
The photos are just quick snaps and I am not too happy with the painting on display or the photography but I feel the method is sound for knocking out a bunch of marines in a minimal amount of time.

Firstly after assembly and priming I lay down a base coat of GW Charadon Granite.

Next I lay down a heavy wash of Badab Black

Then the waiting game begins and I assemble more stuff, once that is dry I give the models a quick and dirty drybrush of 1:1 Charadon Granite and Deneb Stone

Seems I forgot to take a few photos in between some steps. At this point any skulls, seals, pad details etc I give a coat of Deneb Stone, once the base coat is down I then wash them all lightly with Devlan Mud. This same process is done for all metal areas, guns, chains etc but obviously picked out in chainmail.

A further wash of Badab is applied to the metalic areas which i highlight back up the light/bone areas with Deneb Stone, at this point I also fill in any seals etc.
Using a Micron pen I add in lines of txt on all the seals
After that another highlight of 70:30 Deneb Stone and White is applies to the shoulders/skulls/seals, I use this to clean up the edges of the seals which may have too much "text" on them.

After that it is a matter of red highlights, attaching the backpack and cleaning up anything before basing

Then for the base I do a basecoat of Adeptus Battlegrey with a light wash of Badab and drybrush of Astronimican Grey. Since I am doing a dry tundra style base I then use a mix of winter green and autumn yellow static flock.

All in all as I refine this method I think I can start to punch these out at a rapid pace. I also need to keep practising D:

NOTE: I know some steps really lack images, as I paint more Initiates I will take more/better photos and fill in the gaps.

Yeah since I was sort of nailing down my method as I went with this I was taking snaps at my desk as I worked and moved the lamp to a terrible position when I did. I plan on setting up a light box for the next 5 I knock out during the week and will just replace the photos in this post

This is pretty much how I do my Templar, except all of the crosses on mine are painted Red Gore with a Blood Red highlight. Besides that they're nearly the same, and I'm glad someone else has used this paint scheme. Black and white Templar are so difficult (with the white) to do well and are uninteresting once done. This method gives them a much grittier feel, as brutally zealous warriors of the future ought to have. Great work!

Interesting technique for doing black and one that I might use in future. I usually tend to steer clear of anything involving black or white as both are tricky to work with but the overall effect of charandon granite washed with black looks to be quite pleasing.

Looks good mate, my brother paints them sort of like that I guess he just join DakkaDakka today check his Black Templar out.

My brother paints them by basing Adeptus Battle Grey, lightly dry brushes Fortress Grey and washes Badab Black . . . . .

This is great thanks for this.

Tali'Zorah: I appreciate what you're doing here, Shepard.
Commander Shepard: Well, I care deeply about the quarian people.
Tali'Zorah: It's good to be back on the Normandy.
Commander Shepard: Let me know if it's too quiet for you to sleep, and I'll find you someplace louder.
Tali'Zorah: Hmm.
Garrus Vakarian: Uh, I was there when you two had your thing, remember? Just get a room and work it out.

Nice tutorial. I like your approach on how to paint black templars. I think the drybrush of chardon granite makes a huge difference and really adds crucial highlights to the marine armor. Many people just leave Templars a solid black which looks devoid of detail. Nice work

I'm in the process of properly photographing and rewriting this whole process, just trying to nail down a process I am happy with using the new paints.
